Expectations For Mark Sanchez

Should our expectations for the season shift now that Mark Sanchez is our starting quarterback?   Chip Kelly is confident that Sanchez under center will keep the Eagles moving in the right direction, but are you feeling warm and fuzzy about the former New York Jet?

Typically when a backup quarterback is asked is asked to step in, fans know to scale back on how the offense will execute.  “Typical” is not a word that defines our head coach, so the NFC East first place Eagles should continue competing at a high level and winning football games.

Sanchez is a veteran, has won games in the regular season and in the playoffs.  His career win/loss record and high turnover numbers would lead many to believe that the Eagles are in trouble until Foles can come back from his injury.

The Jets, everything about how they ran their program both on and off the field and the style of football they played, absolutely nothing like what is done in Philadelphia.

sanchezSanchez is not going to wow you with his arm strength or play a flawless football game like some of the top quarterbacks in the league.  Is this really different then what Foles has accomplished this season with his off-balanced and forced throws?

Sanchez is more athletic, can buy time in the pocket, and is a guy that Chip has been following since his high school years.  Chip is not going to give the media any indication that Sanchez is a guy better “fit” for his system, but I think Mark can run the current Eagles team better than what Nick was doing.

Sanchez looked composed coming into the game on Sunday against the Texans, and the offense was running the football with some different looks.  With the probably return of Evan Mathis against a Panthers team that has really struggled against the run, I could see Chip getting back to what had the high-tempo offense so successful last season, using the run to set up the pass.

Monday night football, at home for Sanchez to make his first regular season start as a Philadelphia Eagle, I’m sure just a “few” nerves will be running through his body up until game time.

My confidence is strong for Sanchez, I think the offense is going to be run heavy, and his ability to actually do something from an athletic standpoint will be just enough for defenses to respect some of the offensive looks Kelly is going to draw up.

Not only do I think Sanchez exceeds expectations in the absence of Foles, but I think Foles remains on the sidelines even when healthy.

Sanchez is going to “earn” the starting position for the rest of the season.

This System Over all is built around the QB and is a QB friendly game plan. With that said that does not extend to any one player at QB , because it will work with whomever is in there……save a third stringer What I saw last week was the offensive tempo pick way up , the running game open up, and the opposing defense back off the blitz, fearful that Sanchez would make them pay. Last week I saw the quick signing in the 4th Qtr to speed up the tempo, something I have not seen since week one. It caught the other team off guard.

At this stage in the season I think any team would love to have a veteran QB, behind a solid if not very good offensive line, leading us into the playoffs. Icing on the cake if this QB has playoff, and championship game experience. I think we are going to see a confidant re-surging Mark Sanchez. Look at the Jets now, and tell me they are either better off without him, or he was the problem when he was there! The QB situation is a god awful mess! Lets hold on to our seats! the real Chip Kelly lead Philadelphia Eagles are about to emerge!

If Vick dodn’t get hurt he would still be here starting but lost his job while injured.

So, if that’s the case then the bet will be won and those who bet that Foles would not get benched will have to bow out gracefully from Gcobb’s site.

Sweet.

Songs …not so fast …you can’t anoint anything off of 3 quarters of football…it’s conceivable that the eagles redefine who they are as they’ve done in the past when Donovan went down..They became more balanced and allowed for there identity to be a pound the rock first team ..it happened last year when foles came in …shady is the most treasured commodity …as well as the compliment of sproles and now Polk…sanchez is just as capable of holding the fort down as he is to butt fumble away a season ..I’m an eagle fan first and foremost and I hope he is somewhere in the middle ..I do sense this uptempo system is something he seems comfortable with …this is reminiscent for him ,hand the ball off (as he did with the Jets) and minimize Sanchez touches and attempts ..let’s see how he does ..let’s keep an open minded approach ,and let’s enjoy the process…if Foles is back in 4-6 weeks ….I trust the coach will lye us know his preference …after all ,he always had the option of sanchez all along ,it’s not like he wasn’t participating in drills with the 2s …if sanchez is who he was …he’s not the magician you or Jeff think he is ..he’s mark sanchez ….let’s assume he reads the option better than foles …he manages the game behind a restructured line …all these things are positives …but do I feel as much confidence with him going in vs Seattle …or Dallas …No I don’t …our season is at a pivot point at the half way point …while you want so bad to displace nick …if thers no double standards ,well as fans, evaluate what we witness ,not what songs wishes for ..

I expect Sanchez’s historical averages.

55% comp % (too low)
1:1 td int ratio. (not good)
An interception % around 4 (too high)
A sack % around 5 (very good)

Can the offence be geared around Sanchez? Maybe. But if you think Foles was “dink and dunk” (he wasn’t – but that’s what people thought) then wait till you see this, because its going to be a short pass fest. Lots of peeps on here were on and on about how other teams were “not worried about Foles deep” so they crowded the line to stop McCoy. Well….

Nope, The one in the red zone(touchdown) and the same pass nick threw before he got hurt (also a touch down) Dink or dunk Vinne. Try not to be so transparent.

Exactly. The deep throw on Sanches first play. (I apologize for saying “very first play” when it was “Sanchez’s first play – I thought that was obvious)

The one pass From Foles that was out in front of Maclin and he ran in for a td..and the one From Sanchize)he had to wait for and was tackled.

Yes. Sanchez threw ONE deep ball. His very first pass. When the Texans were expecting run. And with a backup rookie CB coming in for his first play in the NFL (I believe).

After that? NADA. Dink, dunk for the next Q and a half…and then? They basically stopped passing at all. And the only ones thrown were under 10 (5) yards.

Expect a lot more of that with Sanchez.

BTW – what the fuck does “try not to be so transparant?” mean anyway.

I HOPE Sanchezz does well. I stated yesterday that I hope Sanchez wins 11 straight games. There’s a parade down Broad street, he signes a 10 year contract and dominates the rest of the decade.

But his history says there is very little chance of that happening.

My feeling is, in about 6 weeks, especially after GB, Thanksgiving and Seattle, you are going to wish you never heard of Mark Sanchez, let alone watch him in an Eagle uni.

Why? Because his history says that’s what will happen.

You cannot compare what Sanchez did or played with in NY by O/Coordinator Brian Shottenheimer’s System which was strictly a Ground & Pound Offense with some Play-Action Passes mixed in..
Do you see the Roster of Jet’s Skill Players at WR’s & TE’s from 2011 & 2012 it’s pretty pathetic…
Chip Kelly’s System is very QB Friendly with a lot of PLaymakers at the Skills Position… Let’s give Sanchez a couple of weeks with all the Practice Reps with the #1 and see him in Action
I believe most of you will be surprised to see how well he plays
This Kelly System is Perfect for Sanchez Skill Set

Vinnie,

Not saying Sanchez is either of these guys…but could you include Steve Young’s stats in Tampa Bay vs SF and Drew Brees stats in SD vs NO?

You picked 3 random QB’s who had the same basic numbers under different coaches and systems. I just gave you 2 other random QB’s who had rebirths under different coaches and systems.

The numbers are just that…numbers. He may be perform to the numbers he had with the Jets or he may not. You really can’t predict with absolute certainty how he is going to perform. Just let it play out…up until that point it is all conjecture…just sayin’

No I won;t use Steve Young or Breese because then you’re comparing a first or second season to a Veteran.

Young played poorly (but not terribly) with TB during his 1st 2 years. Then he basically he sat for 4 seasons before returning to start at 30 years old.

Brees had a slow methodical climb getting better each year…and this through 3 different head coaches….he methodically. slowly got better from 23 to 26 before rolling through his peak from 27-32/33…..

…well….slow improvement every year except for his 2nd year as a starter when his numbers regressed from his first season…….isn’t that weird, a QB regressing a bit in his second year as a starter…never seen that anywhere else before have we….hmmm….but I digress….

I like the guy, but he’s not all there sometimes. As careless as Nick was with the ball this year, that is the norm for Sanchez. Well the guy has a chance to prove what he can do in a good offense. Obviously Im rooting for him.

Eagles Under Chip Kelly will have a different QB about every 15-25 Games or so (1 to 2 Season) …
It’s just what Kelly likes and is Used to and keeps him interested..
There will never be a “Franchise QB” under Chip Kelly, it’s just not the way he Operates … The Offense is about his System and Play Calling, not about the QB..

paulman

November 5, 2014 1:48 pm

Nick Foles will not play a Game the rest of the 2014 Season
for 2 Simple Reasons

1) If Sanchez is Playing Well, that means the Team is Winning and there is no time in Changing QB’s 8 Weeks from Now.. You ride into the Playoffs with the Hot Hand

2) If Sanchez plays like crap and takes the Eagles out of Playoff Position
then the Eagles would Play Matt Barkely the last game or two and then go into the Off-Season with a Game Plan of Foles being the man in 2015 or having to go out and address the QB position in the Draft.. Even if Eagles Do Draft a QB Early in the 2015 Draft, chances are that FOles is the Starting QB come 2015 .. Right now Sanchez is man for the here and now.. Coach Kelly will worry about the Future Eagles QB after the Season

Nick Foles went 6-2 this year as the starter and 8-2 last year as the starter so Mark Sanchez has to have a 7-1 record to beat Nick Foles — No excuses

What a ridiculous claim! Nick Foles padded his stats last year and this year against poor defenses. All Sanchez has to do is reduce the turnovers from the league leader Foles! Manage the game, rely on the running game, and play solid. Sanchez has to stink really bad in order to lose the job to Foles.
Accept the reality…face the facts…Foles is done!

TB Bucs decide to Start QB Josh McNown again and Bench Mike Glennon

Lovie Smith has done a terrible job in preparing this Team to compete on his second go around as NFL HC

Titans have still not Decided on who to Start at QB (Mettenberger, Locker or Whitehurst) .. They was a Suggestion that is gaining strong Support from a Nashville Radio Station on having a “Fan Poll” on who should Play QB for the Titans the rest of the 2014 Season.

Mark Sanchez likes to play in the seams. He likes ins and slants and wide receiver screens. Nick Foles likes to play in the flats with outs and flags. What Mark Sanchez likes is going to get one of these pass receivers lit up by a Kuechley or a Panther safety monday night. The only question is who is it going to be?

Well it doesn’t matter what Sanchez does this weekend because the Eagles are going to win going away.

Carolina is in complete freefall with just 1 win in their last 7.

Now their schedule has been brutally tough, but they have not been able to rise up and take that “next step” they were so excitedly awarded by the media before the season. Their last 5 losses? By 18, by 28, by 21….they then went a–in in a desperation bid vs the Seahawks….didn’t go and the next week was another double-digit loss, by 18 to the Saints.

It gets no easier for the Panther who still have @Philly, @ Minny, @NO, Cleveland, @ATL on their sched. My feeling is we’ll see a lot of the slumped towel on Monday night.

Speaking of which, forget RGIII, I think there’s a distinct possibility of Newton being available after the season. I think Carolina will cut ties.

As to what Paulman said….earlier about QBs…this was my #1 fear of Kelly coming here.

His system ate QBs alive in Oregon. What was it? 8 QBs in 6 years there?

We’re now on the 4th starting QB (Vick, Foles, Barkley, Sanchez) in 25 games for the Eagles.

Is it the system? Is it 5x more practice reps than anyone else?

Is this a coincidence? Can an NFL team win consistently rolling through 2 or 3 QBs a year? I personally do not think so.

paulman

November 5, 2014 4:35 pm

I agree- Panthers are no match for the Eagles Up-Tempo and Talent
Eagles would Win with Me at QB.. Eagles in probably their Easiest Win of the Season – 31 to 13
I am hearing the Panthers Owner,GM and Coach;s are not happy with
Cam Newton’s lack of Progress, some, including myself think the Owner/GM purposely cleaned house at WR and made no real attempt to replace 3 OL from last Years Squad just to see if the Panthers could Win and if Newton was worthy of a Big-Time Contract.. right now the answer is no… Cam has regressed but honestly, he does not have much of a OL, or Running Game or WR’s (outside of Benjamin & TE Olsen) that can make Plays… I see them cutting the chord with Newton, who believe it or not may end up with the NY Jets with New HC Dana Beavall who the Jets will Hire away from the Seahawks
This is my Story and I am sticking with it …

Besides Hardy is a 4-3 Down DL and not really a fit for the base 3-4

Do you want to know why he isn’t even been good enough to play special teams? Go look at his Louisville highlight tape. His QB sacks are all arm tackles you never see him blowing someone up because he isn’t physical. Isnt it strange how we are told how athletic, big, fast etc he is but he cant play ST? Because he cant hit hes a arm tackler coming form the QB position. We might as well took Beau Allen at # 24. he contributes.

Dag, I’ve been saying these things since the day after he was drafted, I want to know what football tape everyone watched that had him on the rise. The film I watched showed a guy who didn’t like to get physical you just cannot teach that. The reason he was moved inside was in my opinion to try to bring the dog out in him you can’t be a finesse inside LB.
