Thoughts From Eagles-Panthers

barqwinSanchez Shines In First Start

In his first start in nearly two years, Mark Sanchez did not disappoint.

Sanchez threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, showing a strong command of the offense.

Sanchez established a great rapport with rookie receiver Jordan Matthews, who caught seven balls for 138 yards and two touchdowns. It was the second time this year that the rookie has caught two scores in a game.

What was most impressive about Sanchez’s effort tonight was that he was able to put up such a great performance without the support of a running game. The Eagles couldn’t get their ground game going at all, with the running backs combining for just 38 yards on 18 carries. Carolina also shutdown starting wideouts Jeremy Maclin and Riley Cooper, holding the two veterans to just four catches for 42 yards.

If I told you before the game that the Eagles’ running backs would combine for just 38 yards and the starting wideouts would have just 42, would you have thought that Sanchez would still be able to put up a 300-yard, multi-touchdown night?

The Panthers took away the run, and Jeremy Maclin, and made Sanchez beat them. The veteran proved that he was more than up to the challenge.

Defense Dominates

In their first game without defensive anchor DeMeco Ryans, who would have expected the Eagles’ defense to put out a dominating performance like this one?

The defense put on one of their most dominating performances in years on Monday night, holding Carolina to just seven points through three quarters while abusing Cam Newton, knocking the Panthers’ franchise quarterback around and forcing him into constant mistakes.

The Eagles sacked Newton nine times and intercepted him three times, returning one of those picks for a touchdown.

Connor Barwin led the defensive charge with 3.5 sacks, giving him 10.5 for the season. Barwin was an absolute wrecking ball in the pass rush, and was constantly chasing Newton down throughout the night.

Mychal Kendricks led the team with eight tackles, and also picked up a sack.

In the secondary, the Eagles finally got some interceptions from players other than Malcolm Jenkins. Cary Williams got things started with a pick in the first quarter, Bradley Fletcher ran back an interception for a 34-yard score in the second half, and Nate Allen came down with his first interception of the season on a deep ball near the endzone.

The defense also added two fumble recoveries to their dominating effort, giving them a total of five forced fumbles.

Quick Thoughts

  • Brent Celek broke out with his strongest game of the season, catching five passes for 116 yards. With the offensive line back at full strength, Celek was free to go out for more passes instead of being used primarily as a blocker.
  • Just one catch for 17 yards for Zach Ertz. Very disappointing that he continues to be an afterthought in this offense.
  • Jeremy Maclin was held to just three catches for 38 yards.
  • Riley Cooper had only one catch for six yards.
  • Didn’t like Kelly’s play call on fourth and two. It was a long-developing play that was hard to convert in that situation.
  • Not sure why Darren Sproles isn’t used more offensively. Sproles had just one carry and one reception for the night.

Defense

  • Casey Matthews picked up seven tackles and forced a fumble in his first start for DeMeco Ryans. Give Matthews credit. He’s never going to be a star in this league, but its clear he’s worked hard and actually looks like a serviceable backup.
  • Trent Cole picked up six tackles and a sack.
  • Its been a very quiet year for Brandon Boykin. Boykin still has yet to pick up his first interception.
  • Brandon Graham had another effective game, picking up 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. The former first-round pick has finally become a solid contributor.
  • Another sack/forced fumble for Vinny Curry, who now has five off of the bench for the season.

Special Teams

  • Darren Sproles returned another punt return for a touchdown. You can’t say enough about the impact he’s made on this team.
  • Cody Parkey drilled another field goal, and hasn’t missed since Week 2.

On to the packers who are clicking on all cylinders.

Anyone who tried to convince people scam newtown is a good qb should never post again. Him and Krappernick are 2 of the worst qbs in the nfl.

Also haaaaaaa to all the people who pissed and moaned when we signed Sanchez and props to those who applauded it

Sanchez had the best statistical game of his career. his passes looked sharp, he moved well and stepped up in the pocket instead of back pedaling. The true test is next week against Green Bay. After that, we will know what we have!

Cam Newton is a great QB. Carolina as a team totally stink they have a lot of problems, but hey, If you will not listen to the media as a whole on Carolina, you will not listen to reason on here.

Correct.. He cannot read defenses or see the entire field
He locks into 1 Receiver only and will throw it regardless if receiver is covered or not.. Newton is a lot like a young Mike Vick ..

If the Eagles tackle Newton like they did Ryan Fitzpatrick, he will have a chance at one or two plays tonight.

However I think its a laugher tonight as well. Davis should be able to easily confuse Newton with multiple scheme blitzes.

Cant leave Benjamin one on one on the left side or anywhere near Allen or we wont hear the end of it from Big lol.

35-10.

I think we see Matt Barkley tonight in mop up.

This place will be on fire if Sanchez plays turnover free.

All i care about is 7-2

I went out to watch the game with the same group of clowns I’ve been watching MNF with for 30 years…anyway pre-game warmups and they showed Newton with the Towel and we were all alaughing.

I want to hear Chip Kelley say Connor Barwin is what an Eagles Player looks like. He has been a total beast since he’s been here. If his hands are not in the air blocking a pass, he is on a QB’s ass!!! Word! he will have 15 sacks by the end of the season quote it! This defense as a whole has a lot of really nice pieces. Its about time for Williams and Fletcher, but they are still two of the weakest links in the passing game.,

CB Fletcher is having a nice year and should be re-signed,
Cary Williams should be released and Nate Allen will not be re-signed
Eagles Need a CB and Safety in the Draft and in Free Agency this Off-Season as well as adding some ILB Depth

The DL is extremely Young with Cox,Thornton,Logan all under 25 Years Old and then add the Back-ups in Bair,Allen,Curry, and Hart should be a nice unit for the next 3-4 Years..

As great as a blowout win is…it’s not an indicator …so everyone buckle it up ..were headed to the frozen tundra ..Green Bay will be a true litmus test for this team ..the Pack also had a laugher vs an NFC division patsy ,making cheese whizz out of the toothless bears ..the Pack averages 30.8 points good for 5th in the nfl…they’ve scored 34 tds vs opponents 24 ..rushed for 923 yds allowing 1283 yds..(telling stat ) since they’re in the lead in most games ,forcing teams to sling it around..this seems to be the Achilles …they moved Matthews inside to hopefully plug that hole ..chip has been masterful at finding teams weaknesses..it serves a dual purpose to increase rushes vs the pack ..keep Rodgers off trifled and neutralize the wrath of winters weather ..this game will be followed by Tennessee and then the meat and potatoes at Dallas ..Seattle ..and Dallas ..at 7-2 beating the pack and having home field over them is huge for this team..kudos to Izzell you nailed yesterday’s feel for the game as did Pman ..Sanchez has stirred the kettle ,however as a realist ,I’ll wait to see how he performs on the frozen tundra and into December …the impact of Barwin ..was indeed impressive ..the rotation of fresh able bodies ..bodes well ..pressure on Rodgers and involving the 3 headed monster running the ball are obvious keys to a winnable game on the road..let’s keep the train rolling

Nothing counts from me what I post during a game..
I’m too Emotional and Beer-ed up to make Rational Posts during a game.

Eagles now get into the Difficult Part of their Schedule and if they can split the next 4 Games (Packers,Cowboys,Seahawks,Cowboys) as they very well can, and then take care of business with the Titans,Redksins & Giants should leave them with 11-12 Wins which puts them in great shape..

Great team win! Always nice to wake up after the Birds destroy an opponent like that…it even makes the work day better (although I am dragging from watching the post-game show after that blowout).

7-2. This team knows how to win and they are showing that when a player goes down…Next Man Up. Sounds corny but it really is the truth. Losing DeMeco is a huge…huge loss, but this defense showed that they can cause problems from all angles. The DL rotation is really firing on all cylinders. Next week will be a huge challenge, and will go a long way towards showing us how good this team really is.

Special teams….truly SPECIAL. New Orleans have got to be so angry that they let Sproles go for a 5th round pick. Howie deserves some credit here, but beyond Sproles the entire ST unit is very very good. A huge advantage just in field position, and with all of the touchbacks it helps the defense. Great job all around.

The offense showed that they can lose their QB and keep right on rolling. Sanchez played well, showed a little rust but what do you expect for not having started a game in close to 2 years. I was surprised that he did not run the read option a little better, but he had no turnovers and made some nice throws. I look for him to improve as he gets more playing time. Must admit, that with as stoked as I am for how the Eagles stomped the Panthers I am a little concerned with Shady. Not a great night for him. I had hoped that with Mathis coming back it would have opened some holes. I would have liked to see more Polk during the first half, but I think with Sanchez starting his first game the Panthers were looking to stop our running game and make Sanchez beat them with his arm.

Next week will be a test, but like I said, this team knows how to win and they do not give up. Even the two losses were down to the last series and play, so I do not expect anything different this week. I will enjoy this win and look forward to next week.

GO BIRDS !!

Great win 7-2.

The defense gives up some plays and makes some. The linebackers are really coming into place on this team. Casey Matthews/E.Acho played well yesterday. The TE seam route was just the Eagles getting caught in a bad defense. Not many ILB are staying step for step with Olsen and top of that where the hell was the Safety help on that play.

Mark Sanchez played mistake free. Brought a different facet to the offense with his mobility. He was erratic in the first half and there were drops that didnt help him. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me. We can not have drive misses like we did in the first half in Green Bay or it could get out of hand quickly.

My main worries are that we are a blitz rush heavy team playing the best blitz killer QB in football. If we dont get to Rodgers he will eat the right side of that secondary alive.

On top of that Brandon Boykins has to have a huge game against Randall Cobb.

Need this team at worst 8-3 going into the 3 game guantlet starting on Thanksgiving.

Thats our season right there folks.

The improved play at the Quarterback position has lifted the team. Hitting open receivers, good footwork in the pocket, 7 for 7 in the red zone where we one of the worst teams in the league in the red zone- NO TURNOVERS .

That’s bull…The quarterback is the difference in the red zone, this have nothing to do with anyone could have won against Houston or Carolina.

Foles could have continued his red zone issues against Houston and Carolina and that’s not good enough.

Eagles can beat any bad team with bad quarterback play but can never expect to win in the Playoffs with bad quarterback play.

That’s the point.

Sanchez wasn’t average last night.

The offense was not the weakness of the team but an asset.

This is a better football team with Mark Sanchez…plain and simple. and don’t give me this last season BS when talking about Foles.

Foles kept teams in the football game playing like hot shit the first half of every game at the end of last year.

Sanchez is the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The ultimate test will come this weekend in GB. Like I said earlier, the Packers are one of the top few teams in the NFL despite their record. If they can go into GB and pull out a win or at the very least, bring it down to the wire, I will become a believer that this team should be in the Superbowl conversation. It’s going to be a tall order though as I think Rodgers and those WRs are going to have a field day against our secondary if we don’t get constant pressure. Early line is Packers -6.5.

Same concerns here btc. I am sure that the Panthers were geared up to stop the run, but every team in the league will likely do the same thing. He seems to floating and running more east-west looking for a seam. We need a strong running game to move forward in the playoffs. Kelly will need to evaluate who works best and gets the most in the running game.

McCoy dropped 2 Passes last evening also ad didn’t look himself..
I hope to see Polk with a few more Carries between the Tackles where the Packers are vulnerable.. Then McCoy/SProles on the Edges

About the only area where Sanchez Struggled last evening was the quick outs, bubble routes and screen passes where he was out of sorts and off-target.. .
He and the Offense need to get those kinks worked out so they can have the full arsenal of plays and formation to throw out at them versus the Packers

The biggest drawback from this game is the Birds area legit 3 phase team. Its been a while since we had this in this town. Defense and ST alone can take you very far. With this offense the Birds have a good shot to make alot of noise down the stretch.

Darren Sproles is the team MVP IMO. What he is doing on offense and STs cant be overstated.

I highly doubt teams punt him the ball outside of by mistake. In doing so prepare for a ton of shanks and short fields because of it.

November 11, 2014 2:31 pm

Kelly said nothing was wrong with the running game other than they stacked the box and slanted the secondary towards Maclin’s side of the field that’s why the TE and Matthews in the slot had big games. Roman Harper can’t cover me that’s why they targeted him. Sprouls should’ve had more touches though.

That was a great block. I think that is why Chip really likes him at this point is that he does the intangibles well. But really, they need a lot more production out of him.

From Chip Kelly:

“We didn’t play well offensively at all … I just don’t think we were very consistent overall. I think we could have sustained some drives — we missed a couple of key conversions on short-yardage situations … I believe we didn’t play up to our potential on the offensive side of the ball.”

Yes IJ. Chip is a smart coach, and he is looking at the individual drives and the results. For all of the poor mechanics and increased turnovers that he has shown this year compared to last year, Foles has still had a number of sustained drives with multiple first downs.

I agree with Kelly that there were a number of missed opportunities for converting 3rd downs last night. Really, what is the overall difference between a turnover or a 3 and out, other than field position?

That is great stuff. Looking to improve after a beatdown. Can be ok to not play as well as long as you don’t turn the ball over.

Will need to be on it next week though if they want to win.

Chip and all the NFC coaches have taken notice of the Patriots high scoring attack. Forget Manning and the Broncos, the Pats are going to be hard to stop this year.

Kelly knows it will take many points!

Injuries around the NFL

49ers ILB Pat Willis has been declared out for the remainder of the Season and will have surgery on that Toe that’s been bothering him most of the Season. I expect that Willis has played his Final Game as a 49er as they have Rookie Pat Borland and Dan Skuda on the ILB that are younger and cheaper to go along with a healthy Navarro Bowman for 2015
(Willis would like nice in Silver & Green as a back-up Plan in DeMeco Ryans doesn’t make it back from injury which is no given)

Seahawks lost DT Brandon Mebane for the Season with a torn Hamstring which is a major blow to their Interior Defense which has also been without ILB Bobby Wagner who should be returning soon

Paulman’s NFC Rankings after Week #10

1) Arizona Cardinals (8-1) Face the Lions and the rest of the Season with QB Drew Stanton at the helm, wonder when the bubble will burst
2) Detroit Lions (7-2) Winners of 4 in a Row – Defense Ranks #1 in the NFL
3) EAGLES (7-2) Getting Healthy along that OL which bodes well for stretch run which will need better balance between the Run and the Pass
4) Cowboys (7-3) Back on Track after beating up on Jaguars
5) GB Packers (6-3) Huge Win over Rival the Bears, Go as QB Rodgers Go
6) Seahawks (6-3) Getting Back to Basics and Relying on their Running Game with Beast Mode, & QB Russell Wilson on the read-option
7) 49ers (5-4) – Probably saved their Season and Playoff Chances with that OT Win over the Saints
8) Saints (4-5) – Because somebody has to Win the NFC South… meaning a good quality Team will not make the Playoffs… Ouch

****HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO*****

After the season if the opportunity was there….would you cut McCoy and bring in Marshawn Lynch?

Me personally no. Cooler talk with a buddy who was saying Lynch would be perfect here.

I think if Jonathan Stewart gets cut this offseason the Eagles will take a flyer on him.

They arent giving him a new deal either. Unless Russell Wilson is coming up out of 10 million out of his signing bonus and I doubt that happens.

Lynch goes to either the 49ers with Frank Gore getting older
And to pay back the Seahawks or will end up in Oakland with big $$$
Lynch wants nothing to do with the East Coast
He’s from Oakland and and a West Coast guy
Don’t discount the Arizona Cardinals as suitors also
He and Ellington would make a good combo

Crabtree has underachieved and hurt a lot,
Not much of a downfield blocker either,
I stay away from him for the $$$ he is seeking
I do think they will either Re-Do Coopers a Deal
Or replace him, lots of WR’s hitting Free-Agency and a pretty deep
WR Class in the a Draft in 2015

Watched the game twice just to make sure I wasn’t overly hype on Sanchez. Panthers loaded the box and dared Sanchez to throw and he came through. It won’t be that easy every week and the Panthers are just not a good team defensively, but my god was his throws on the money. Sanchez has been really accurate with the ball and completion % does not tell the story. He had a few pin point passes dropped 2 through Sproles hands that would have blew the game open even earlier. He moved in the pocket several times and hit Mathews with ease on the run in stride. Mathews cathes had been all lateral just to get in the flow stuff. All of a sudden Celek can catch again could it be bc the QB sees him come open late by keeping his eyes down field and side stepping the rush like a confidant qb should?
This D has been playing well almost all year, Billy Davis comes up with a new gameplan every week for each team its really a beautiful thing. As much as I loved Jim Johnson we got killed the same ways everytime and he would sell out with the blitz and good qb’s would go to town with screen plays and late crossing patterns. Last night I saw hidden qb spy’s guys lined up all over the place just a great mix. They look confident and play hard all game. Cam Newton could never get a rhythm that panthers O-line totally quit and his wr are horrible besides a rookie why they would keep Steve Smith another year is beyond me. Team get mobile QB’s and decide they don’t need great wr’s I don’t get it.

Did you notice Sanchez mobility in the pocket, excellent foot work. Not bad at all for a guy who has not played for such a long time. To be a ‘mobile’ QB you dont have to be a runner…that’s just extra…Sanchez moves well enough and quick enough to get his feet set.
Now mind you…he’s no Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady….Sanchez doesn’t have to be…simply cut down on the turnovers, secure the ball, execute in the red zone….be efficient we have a solid defense and good special teams

Yeah I was impressed with how he moved through his progressions. The fact that Celek had 100 yards shows he was making it to his 3rd and even 4th read at times and not losing accuracy due to the internal clock. the line did a great job keeping him clean but he also helped himself when he had to. I think Foles made some of the same reads but his mechanics were off when he released the longer he held the ball. Sanchez was pump faking resetting the functional mobility it great in the pocket. Hopefully with this tape out the running lanes will be back open down the stretch.

Agree dag. I am having the same feeling for Coop that I had with James Casey last year. Big contract, big money…but where is the production? Blocking and special teams are no doubt improtant, but for your #2 WR you need more production. Coop barely played during camp and in the preseason, and we keep waiting to see him do the things he and Foles did at the end of last year, but like too many players before him, he is looking more and more like a bust who got a big contract off of a good partial season. Next man up…that means you Mr. Matthews. Show us what you have got.

Michael Crabtree is crying in San Fran because he is the 3rd option in the offense. You can’t have superstars across the line of scrimmage you need role players.
Eagles average 71 plays from scrimmage this season for 31 points.
McCoy will get 25 touches a game ( 5 years 45 million)
Maclin will get 10 targets,
Tight ends will get 8 targets,
Sproles will get 6 targets,
Matthews will get 5 targerts,
Cooper will get 4 targets,
Polk,Huff, Casey, and Maehl will combine for 5 targets.
with 8 plays for knee downs, sacks, and qb throw aways.
——————————————————–
Riley Cooper was signed to be a bridge to develop Matthews and Huff. It is working Matthews is developing and Huff is starting to get a few of Riley’s snaps. Why complain about a successful strategy. If Maclin or Matthews suffered a devastating injury then Cooper would get more targets.

Good points both of you……what does it average out to per catch? $10mm per what? Pretty good work if you can get it…but truthfully, I like E0S’s take on his role with the team. Kelly is turning out to be the ultimate “system over individual” coach. Frankly I remember the same talk about Reid’s system being so good that AJ Feeley was able to step right in when Donovan went down and be successful. I think that there is a little more to it with Kelly, and just like with the QB position, maybe less dependent on having that “star” player and rather have a few really good players who are smart and can do what the situation demands. We should know a little better in a few years.

Stevo

Yes, the panthers loaded the box and so we had to throw. This has happened all year and honestly…. Foles hasnt made teams pay. I partially think this is true cause we dont have a burner but… regardless it is what it is. That said…. i believe Foles will get it done long term.

So…. THIS is why the read option play actions matter. If they drop back…. hand off. If they stay in the box….. kill them in the air. Im worried about Shady but…. i still think he turns it on.

read option is relatively new but early returns are suggesting that quality wide receivers aren’t that thrilled to play in it. Harvin, Tate and Steve Smith seem happy to be rid themselves of the offense.
