Eagles-Panthers Reflection

aanchThe Mark Sanchez led Philadelphia Eagles came to play Monday night, thumping the Carolina Panthers 45-21.  Joining the starting quarterback, was a defense that recorded nine sacks, recovered two fumbles, snagged three interceptions and returned one for a touchdown, a full course meal for the Billy Davis coached unit.  Darren Sproles represented the special teams as well, wowing his coaches, teammates and fan base on his 65 yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Eagles came to play, and they won with a game plan that most thought they would attack with a bit differently.  There was no easing Sanchez into the mix with a three headed approach running the football.  McCoy and Sproles both scored rushing touchdowns, but on the night the team averaged less than two yards per carry.  Rookie Jordan Matthews had his second multi touchdown game of his rookie season, while Brent Celek had more receiving yards last night than he had previously recorded “all season.”  Sure, there were some early throws that Sanchez probably wished he could have back, and he almost was intercepted on the one throw, but the guy had a really good game after a long layoff from starting in the NFL.

Connor Barwin and company should pay for the ice that Cam Newton will be bathing in for the next couple of days; they punished him relentlessly and made a big bodied man look rather small.  There were so many different combinations of stunts, twists and delays that the front seven executed, each player staying contained with their assignment allowing for the “team” to execute so successfully.  The big question on how Casey Mathews would handle the play-calling duties that Ryans left behind is rather hard to decipher how he really did with a team performance like last night.  The one thing I can take away is that any respectable tight-end the Eagles face moving forward, maybe reconsideration for who you assign to cover him should be given some thought.

What I take from this performance is that the Eagles will continue to remain a scoring threat anytime they are on the football field.  The offense is only one way for this team to score; as they are currently on pace to break the thirteen touchdown mark scored by the defensive and special team units.

Although the secondary played well for most of the evening; the Panthers really only had two weapons to throw to, and both had really good football games, even if the touchdowns by Benjamin came late in the football game.  The next game on the schedule is the most difficult combination of quarterback and receiving threats that our secondary will has faced and will see during the regular season.

If you listened to the way Chip sounded during his post-game interview, his wording sounds similar to Barwin and Sanchez.  The way this team believes in themselves as a “team,” the message that the coach has instilled in his football team since taking the job last season is absolutely being heard.

They approach each game with a very detailed plan of execution, and no fingers are pointed when things don’t go as planned, responsibility is taken by the players, and the next task at hand is immediately the focus.

There is not a single coach or player that feels the team is playing good football, they accept the win and will provide you a list of all of the plays they wish they could have back, suggesting that film, reps and the rest of the week will be spent correcting those mental and executional errors.

We are not alone with our expectations of this football team; they have a vision that matches ours, win.

The next opponent is the Green Bay Packers; a team that also blew out their opponent on prime time television in week 10.

How does your confidence feel from what fired you up last night to the test facing the Eagles as they prep for their visit to Lambeau Field on Sunday?

Excited! I think this team matches up well against the Packers. I know their receivers are able to abuse our corner backs but their O line is not that good. I expect Barwin, Cole, Graham, and Cox to have a big game. Jenkins is a difference maker on this D and another captain that will help fill void left by Ryans. Offensively. Well you pick the threat. They might take away certain players but we have other weapons.

TIME FOR BOYKIN TO SHINE AND LEAVE HIS MARK ON THIS SEASON. I THINK HE HAS THE SKILL SET TO CONTAIN RANDALL COBB AND SHOULD FOLLOW HIM ALL OVER THE FIELD AS COBB WILL ABUSE FLETCHER AND WILLIAMS.

SHINE BOYKIN!!!!!!!

LETS GET IT

Yes, Boykin does need to have his Best Game of the Season vs the Packers..
Did you notice Nolan Carroll playing LB on Passing Down’s
The Packers will throw to their RB’s quite a bit so I expect to see Carroll
again at LB
I have thought and still think that Nolan Carroll would make a nice Free-Safety to pair up with Malcolm Jenkins.. He has the Size, Ball and Coverage Skills and is a sure Tackler…
Having a Secondary with Jenkins/Carroll at Safety
then Fletcher and Boykin at the Corners would be their best Secondary

Mark Sanchez likes to throw In routes. Jordan Matthews will continue to be the feature pass receiver until a team takes it away. Sanchez and Kelly threw the ball to Matthews 9 times for 7 catches Monday night for 19 yards a catch and 2 TDs. Green Bay is going to have to double Jordan Matthews or get burned which should open things up for Shady if the double comes from a LB or Maclin if the double comes from a safety. If Green Bay is foolish enough not to double Matthews he will repeat his performance with 100 yards and 2 TDs.

Same barometer. I want to see if Sanchez is as tough as Foles. Nick took some fairly vicious hits this season, and I do remember him getting up at times, and making a ridiculous throw to keep us in the game. Can Sanchez take it on the chin, remained focus and keep himself and the team in the game?

This team has a lot of weapons to cover and you cant cover everyone. So does Green Bay. The game will come down to which defense can hold the other team in the red zone. Unfortunately, Williams and Fletcher have been getting burned there all year………….

the book to defeat Sanchez is out already — Take away the middle of the field and force him to throw outside. He doesn’t like to throw to the sidelines. He will roll out to the sidelines to get a receiver in front of him but he doesn’t fair well when he has to use the flats from the pocket.

According to Maclin, Sanchez doesn’t have foles’ big arm, so you will see different throws, more timing passes over the middle, as eos points out

There is no question but that Sanchez avoids throwing 20 yard out patterns.

Sanchez has nowhere near the arm strength as Foles…. Not that it matters…. His arm is good enough for our offense.

Firstly the Matthew’s “breakout” and Celek big game were no suprise with Sanchez in.

These are the guys had been practicing with constantly. Sanchez spent the entire summer with the guy. Whenever Foles left the practice field and Sanchez went in, Ceelek and Ertz also switched.

Sanchez had a very nice game….I especially liked how “quick” the team got to the LOS and ran a play. But that was a pretty ‘safe’ game don’t you think? Anyone remember any deep bombs down field?

However, lets not get away from ourselves.

Against Houston Foles was 9 of 12 for 124 1td 1 int
Against Houston Sanchez was 15 of 22 for 202 2td 2 int
Seems to me thats just about the exact same thing…well except for Foles higher % and yrds/catch…but I digress.

Against Carolina, Sanchez had a nice game. A nice game. But settle down. Carolina has been giving up nice games to QBs all year.

If anything I am a little worried the the Line was 20/37 (54%????) for 332 (nice) and 2tds 0 ints

Remember….this is when teams have NO film on Sanchez as the Eagles starter.

And he’s nice.

What did Foles look like early in this offence when there was no film on him? Did he look “nice?” No, he put up insane numbers.

He regressed as teams got a feel for him in the O. Started learning his tendencies etc.

Is that suddenly not going to happen with Sanchez??

And when it does….when Ds start learning about Sanchez in this O…when they learn how to attack him….will he drop off? And if he drops off….where’s he dropping from? “Nice??”

I am still worried about the guy’s arm. And I am still worried about his head. He’s played 2 creampuffs.

This week will be a big teat.

BTW – did you know that when with the Jets, they hired acting coaches to teach the guy how to stand properly, how to change his body language to show “confidence” when he was losing?

Lets hope those lessons paid off eh?

Again, I hope he does well, but a half against Houston, then a nice game against one of the worst 3/4 teams in football? Not convinced.

Vin , Foles is injured and we are relying on Sanchez to keep this team moving forward. I am not ready to anoint him our franchise WB, and I did see some areas from the last game that he will hopefully improve, but I support him fully and want him to succeed. You also need to realize that it was almost 2 years since his last start, so there is a definite rust factor to consider.

It is now a QB competition, but more importantly this is an Eagles team that is becoming feared in the NFL and looking to make a great jump forward in the playoffs.

I hope we blitz Rodgers the same way we blitzed Newton. The delay spy blitzes with barwin and kendricks was killing the panthers. kendricks blitzed to the outside a lot too and that helped keep cam in the pocket. He couldn’t roll out like he wanted to

The Delay Blitz will not work with a Pocket Savy QB like Rodgers.
If Eagles are going to BLitz and they Will, they need to come right if after him..
Delay Blitzing works against crappy Pocket QB’s like Newton who don’t scan the entire field and lock into 1 Receiver and hold the ball, hold the ball until Kelvin Benjamin gets open.. Aaron Rodgers will clean their clock by delay blitzes for he will pass the space that LB just vacated for a big gain to RB’s Lacy,Starks or quick slants or one of their TE’s

If Birds blitz a lot, they’ll give up 45pts.

The Eagles do not need to consistently blitz to get pressure on Rodgers. The Packers O line is not a stonewall. I believe the Eagles will be able to generate pressure without the blitz. Rodgers can be sacked. The d backs are going to have to play their best game of the year in order for this to happen….and it can happen.

bfdaking215

November 12, 2014 8:57 pm

I’d rather blitz then sit back and get picked apart. We don’t get enough pressure in the middle that’s why most qbs can step up in the pocket against us. That delayed spy blitz will work against Rodgers because he makes a lot of his plays out of the pocket. Cam is not as bad as all of yall are making him out to be. The kid has nothin to work with and his qb coach and off coordinator don’t help him out at all. That strategy works against mobile qbs

Naw, the Eagles run a 3-4 which requires the NT to hold the line so the LBers can attack the QB. We all know this of course. The Eagles have 32 sacks so far this year. Second most in the NFL. I remember when the Eagles had to blitz to generate pressure. The d line is not caving allowing QB’s to consistently step up in the pocket. This year, there have been a lot of 3 and outs and drives have not been prolonged. If the Eagles blitz heavy, Rodgers will pick the secondary apart. I would blitz on a 3rd and long and in certain situations, but not consistently. Rodgers would burn the defense with screens and bubbles.

If the Eagles want to win this game it has to start with the run game.

The Eagles offense must improve from how they played last week. According to Chip Kelly the Eagles offense did not play that well. Chip said, “I think that if you asked the guys on the offensive side of the ball, they felt like they didn’t play well. I believe we didn’t really play up to our potential on the offensive side of the ball.”

The reason Chip said that is because the Eagles went 5-15(33%) on third downs. Additionally, we had nine drives that went for eight yards or fewer. Furthermore, we had only 38 rushing yards. Moreover, we held the ball less than 22 minutes.

These numbers are not good at all. The Panthers are just that bad of a team.

If the Eagles have any chance this week, we have to consistently move the ball and play keep away from Rogers. We can play keep away by running the ball consistently. Anything less than 100 rushing yards and a time of possession less than 25 minutes will not get it done.

Our defense is not good enough to compete head-to-head with Rogers without help from an offense that has trouble sustaining drives.

Sanchez played solid, however we need to develop this run game and fast. As we get into the colder months the elements may be a factor that hinders the pass game. If the pass game is hindered, as of right now, I have very little confidence in the run game to do anything. I have not seen much from these backs like I did last season.

I hope things get turned around soon.

I would discuss the Eagles secondary (Williams and Allen) but this will be their last season here anyway. They will probably be the target Rogers will exploit early and often.

To combat this problem the Eagles will have to rely on a consistent pass rush from the front. This does not mean blitz Rogers. Instead, it means that the Eagles will need to utilize and rely on Graham, Curry and Barwin to generate a rush. We cannot simply blitz because Rogers knows how to beat a blitz. He is not Cam Newton. Additionally, the Packers have one of the better backs in the league to rely on. If we blitz from the wrong direction it could spell disaster.

I think the Packers win by three. It will be similar to the Arizona and 49ers games.

Nah tua, the Eagles don’t want to win LOL, good analysis though the Eagles need to sustain drives and score TD’s and try to get off the field on third down and limit the Pack to field goals. They of course cannot commit turnovers and give themselves a chance in the 4th quarter. Anybody’s game I like the Eagles 34-27.

Good points tua. I know that Kelly hates the time of possession discussion, but when you are playing a team with a QB like Rogers, Manning or Brady, you cannot keep giving them the ball time after time, even if you are scoring points. They will eventually make you pay. Your offense needs to help here and keep the ball out of their hands. The run game can be key. My fear is that Kelly has a gunslingers attitude that he can out score anyone. Hopefully Davis can let him know that keeping the ball out of Rogers hands is something that they want to do as much as possible on Sunday.

Green Bay losses ( all 3 on the road)
————————————————
Seattle dominated GB in the run game and used Lynch to set up read option pass/runs with Russel Wilson. Rodgers chickened out and avoided Richard Sherman like the plague, it was a completely flawed offensive game plan by GB.
————————————————–
Detroit dropped everyone into coverage showing only a 6 men in the box at the snap and dared GB to beat them in the run game. GB couldn’t, they tried to run the correct play by handing it Lacy but Detroit was able to stop the run with 6 men and rush the passer successfully with only 4 and double everyone in the secondary. Detroit defensive front 4 was too good for GB. Detroit’s D put up 9 points and held GB O to only 7 points in a 19-7 win.
———————————————————-
New Orleans got lucky.
GB turned the ball over twice, dropped 2 passes in the end zone and committed 2 red zone penalties killing drives. GB beat themselves.

Eagles/Packers mirror each other quite a bit..
They score quickly and usually are on the short end of Time of Possession
just like the Eagles.. Whichever Team Can establish a Running Game and be persistent about it will most likely win.. Turnovers will be huge for no Team can afford to give a short field to the other.. Special Teams will also be big which the Packers have very solid Coverage and Return Teams too

EHL. I have been asking that question for a while. Being an asshole doesn’t mean that he isn’t a good coach, there are plenty of asshole coaches in the HOF. Foles is s different QB this year, and not in a good way. QB coaches can make a difference. They meet everyday, they go over film and the game plan. I saw Randall regress after Doug Scoville’s passing. Maybe it is nothing, but I have believed for some time now that the departure of Lazor and installation of Musgrave has been a contributor to Foles drop off in production and poor mechanics. I guess we will never really know, but I am sticking with that theory until there is something better.

Here is what we know…..

Foles has the “better” aka stronger arm for sure. Anyone who disagrees has not watched games.

That said….. Foles DOES underthrow the WR’s often.

We have ALWAYS put up points over the last few years… as always… the QB situation is FINE!!! It’s the special teams and most importantly the D that has stepped up and poof!!!, we win games!!!!

Rush.yds 101.3 Good for 18th ..however ,all of this comes down to our corner williams and safety nate Allen vs Randall Cobb and jordy Nelson have combined for 18 tds 10 and 8.. as overall the pack is 12 th ranked …in offense they provide headaches with Rodgers …the pass rush and spy scheme will hopefully keep him moving and not able to set his eyes down the field..on special teams the pack has not had any kick returns to the house ..I look for a ground and pund game with each team not getting away from who they are ,taking big shots down the field..based upon last weeks run output ,I’m sure the concentration in the film room dealt with fixing this things from last week ..the pack will in this copy cat league look to overload the box and I look for a confident Celek and a fighting for his stature ertz to play in two tight end sets ..the packers Achilles is there 30th ranked rush defense ..they were in desperation mode after getting mauled by the sea hawks and most recently the saints..they moved Matthews inside ,it worked against the bears ,but I expect Mathis to seal that off ..peters will have to neutralize peppers …and I look for Mathews and sanchez to again have each other’s back….Vegas has the pack at 6 and 55 …do they believe in sanchez? No they don’t …well have to see ..

-6 is a fair line. They give 3 for home field.

55 is interesting, especially if its snowing like is being predicted.

Snow (not blizzard snowing)…but snow…especially snow on the ground = high scoring games.

Remember how many points the birds scored on Detroit in last years snow game. I guess Vegas is looking for a repeat.

Two teams mirror one another ..I’m out here in arizona desert ..they also have a huge game vs lions number one ranked defense and now a back up qb as Palmer is done..we have sanchez leading the birds into the frozen tundra ..I think the winner of these two games is an NFC potential matchup..

This game matters in my mind vs pack as it insures a leg up in the NFC ,possibly a number one seed is on the line ..the cards have to navigate ,with a back up qb a tough schedule in the lions and the NFC west ..Dallas we will split with in all likelihood ,although I hate them fuckers , and I don’t concede anything..the Tennessee game is what it is …as are the end of the giants and washingtons seasons …it’s the packer game and the Seahawks game at the Linc..it’s why winning in lambeau would put on your resume ,you beat the colts and the packers and were inches from winning in both San Fran and arizona …it’s that big a deal…I think chips comments ..this is our Super Bowl ,shows me ..he thinks so too…

Desert I am thinking much of the same. I would have to believe that Kelly wants to make a statement. Above all he wants to win the game, but he also knows that this can be a statement game where the whole league will pay attention. I cannot wait until game time.

GO BIRDS !!!

Vinnie we know sanchez arm vs Rodgers ..if it’s blustery ,short passes might be the way to go ..quick read options ..I believe the weather might hurt Green Bay more as sanchez isn’t an over the top guy as is Rodgers ..the over under on sanchez attempts I believe to be successful has to be in the high 20s..if we are as Vegas predicts in a shoot out ..I’m concerned

Well…if by “blustery” you mean wind…that often leads to low scoring games….and if that’s the case, I think a strong arm is always preferable.

Some GB forcasts are for snow but not a lot of wind. Snow on the ground is always a recipe for a high scoring game Offence always has a huge advantage.
