Some Thoughts/Suggestions For Eagles-Giants

MattBarkley1If Foles Can’t Go, Give Matt Barkley A Start

Plain and simple, I’ve seen enough of Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez had an opportunity to distinguish himself in an offense that is supposedly quarterback-friendly, but instead of proving that he deserved a chance to start here or somewhere else next year, the veteran proved that he’s purely a backup quarterback. With the season now officially a lost cause, there’s no longer any reason to have the former New York Jet in the lineup.

Its very unlikely that Nick Foles will be ready to go on Sunday, and even if he receives clearance to play, it would be unwise to roll him out there.

So its time to get a look at Matt Barkley. The former fourth-round pick has now had almost two full seasons to study and learn, and its time to give him a look on the field in a regular season game.

The Eagles need to have some idea on what they have in Barkley. Can he come in and compete for the backup job next year? It’d be nice if they could get some idea about him.

There’s no downside to playing Barkley this week. If he plays well, it potentially scratches backup quarterback off of the Eagles’ to-do list in the offseason, and gives the young prospect something to build off of over the winter.

If Barkley stinks up the joint, the Eagles can find it easier to part ways with him and will also only strengthen their position in the draft from another loss.

Keep Darren Sproles Sidelined

Sproles has been such an asset for the Eagles all year long, but he is an older running back with some considerable mileage on him.

Sproles has played through some injuries this year, and the Eagles would be wise to just hold him out of this meaningless content and preserve him as best they can for 2015.

Don’t Bench The Corners

I know this comes off as a bit of a strange suggestion, but hear me out.

Unlike another position like quarterback, the Eagles don’t really have much to gain by playing some of their younger players at this position against the Giants.

The way Odell Beckham has been setting the world on fire over the last month and a half, do you really think anyone on this roster will be able to cover him? The last thing I want to see happen is for a talented prospect like Jaylen Watkins to be thrown out into the fire after being inactive most of the year and get his confidence destroyed by the red-hot Beckham.

Also, at this point it actually benefits the Eagles to have Williams and Fletcher on the field. The team has nothing to gain from a victory here. Its time to play for the future, and that means getting into the best position possible in the draft, which can only be achieved this week with a loss. So yes, I’m suggesting that the Eagles take a page out of Sam Hinkie’s playbook, and put themselves in the best possible position to lose this game. And that means having Bradley Fletcher matched up against Odell Beckham in single coverage all day with so safety help, just like Billy Davis’ brilliant gameplans against Dez Bryant and DeSean Jackson.

And honestly, after Davis was so stubborn all year about screwing up his nickel and dime packages by benching either Cary Williams or Bradley Fletcher, honestly it’d be flat out insulting to me as an Eagles fan to see the move that many of us have been painfully screaming for all year to finally take place in Week 17, just after the team had been eliminated from playoff contention.

Chip said on WIP he’s going with Sanchez, my question is, what is he trying to prove? Is he doing it cause we all feel it doesn’t make sense since we’re out of the playoffs n most likely Sanchez won’t b back next year n he’s trying to be defiant? This is the stuff that turns me off! I was all for Chip when we got him n I’m still on board but when it comes to the obvious ( make changes in the secondary, give Barkley a shot since he will be here next year) it pisses me off, it’s like their insulting our intelligence, they act like since they saw game film n we didn’t we don’t know anything, have to keep it real Chip n call it like we all see it, the only one your fooling is yourself.

Barkley should play this week. Huff and Matthews as starting WRs. Polk at RB. Smith, Caroll, Boykin and every other young guy playing on D.

Nothing else makes sense.

Can we finally see marcus smith? . is 10 plays next week too much to ask for at OLB. Slide him in for 5 Connor Barwin snaps and 5 Brandon Graham snaps.

I cannot for the life of me understand why barkley is not playing… give him one week of first team reps, one week of an nfl game, speed etc…
sanchez had his audition, whatever happens will happen for him, back up money somewhere i can pressume-
I can assume by this that barkley isn’t even good enough to be foles’ back up next year

Chip says he wants to win. I think they should be getting a look at the Jalen Watkins and marcus Smith’s of the world to see what you got. Nothing can be gained by playing your starters. I wonder if he would be playing the starters if the Eagles were going to the playoffs, or had a 1st round bye?
Right now the Eagles are slotted at # 20 in the draft, if they win it will possibly screw that up..lose for the better draft pick.

there is no way they ‘lose on purpose’ to go from 20 to 18 or something… that just isn’t the way they are wired… but i do believe they should get a look at some of the bench players…

i understand that i just don’t think professionals are wired like that. by the same token the giants can move up with a loss as well. so by that logic they will be playing hot potato with the football where no one wants to possess it… coaches will call for third down punts etc…

I don’t think they naturally go out to lose, but, we have all seen football teams play like crap in the last game when they are not going into the post season. Just sort of going through the motions to get to their season ending vacations. I know ODB will be ballin, can’t say the same for Fletcher and Cary.

Paulman’s Plan to Fix the Secondary

# 1) Cut Players like Trent Cole, D Ryans, T Herremans,Cary Williams
and James Casey to save $35 Million worth of Salaries in 2015

#2) Pursue the Following Free-Agent CB’s and Sign 2 of them

A) Chris Culliver – 49ers (6-0- 200lbs – 26 Years Old)
B) Byron Maxwell – Seahawks (6-0 205lbs – 26 Years Old)
C) Parrish Cox – 49ers (6-0 195lbs 26 Years Old)
D) Walt Thurmond – Giants (6-0 200lbs – 27 Years Old)
E) Davon House – Packers (6-0 195lbs -26 Years Old
F) Brandon Carr will be Released by Cowboys per all Reports
G) Brandon Flowers – Chargers (5-11 195lbs)

Then Sign 1 of these Safety’s

A) Da’Norris Searcy – Bills (5-11 212lbs – 26 Years Old)
B) S Gilchrest – Chargers (6-1 215lbs)

Then Draft a CB & Safety in this Drafat which is not real Deep at either Position to Groom behind these Players.. The good thing about my list
is that these Players are 4-5 Year Vets but in their Primes and Young enough to play together for 3-4 Years which is truly the only way that Secondaries can shine together.. It’s hard to have Players come and go or coach’s and Schemes change every other year..

PMan, I don’t know all the corner’s ability on your list. But I would like to scratch off a couple corners. Brandon Carr is a zone corner and would be worse than Bradley Fletcher especially in Billy Davis’s man to man system. Perrish Cox won’t pass the back ground criteria to be a member of Jeffery Lurie’s franchise.

paulman
paulman
December 22, 2014 3:32 pm

Perrish Cox has some baggage no doubt and probably doesn’t pass the “Culture Test”

Culliver,Maxwell, Thurmond have all played Man to Man with the 49ers & Seahawks.. (Thurmond signed a 1 Year Contract with Giants this Year as a Nickel back after coming off an Injury in 2013)
Your right about Carr who is probably not a good Fit scheme wise though he played lots of Man to man during his Time with the Chiefs

I really like Safety Norris of the Bills.. he would be the more Run Stopper and allow Malcolm to be a Pure Free-Safety
Norris has 3 Int’s, 2 Forced Fumbles and about 60 Tackles this Year for
the Bills..

I didn’t watch one Buffalo game this year so I’ll have to take your recommendation on their safety. Was Norris a reserve last year? I remember them signing a safety named Williams to big money when Byrd rejected their offer. So I assume Williams and Bryd were the starters in 2013.

paulman
paulman
December 22, 2014 3:50 pm

Yes Byrd & Williams were their Safeties in 2012 & 2013 and Norris was a Special Teamer and a Back-Up and if you recall, Byrd had injuries while in Buffalo and couldn’t practice many weeks and missed games so Norris got lots of snaps,reps,etc.. One of the Reasons the Bills let Byrd walk last year was because they felt that Williams and Norris could play just as well as a Tandem for cheaper and also the fact that Byrd has been injury prone…..
Norris played at U of North Carolina so I have seem him play over the past few Years..I don’t think he’s an All-Pro, but just a Solid All-Around who is in his Prime

A Couple of other young CB’s to check out in Free_Agency

1) Phillip Adams – NY Jets (27)
2) Brandon Ghee – Titans (28)
3) Shareece Wright – Chargers (28)
4) Sterling Moore – Cowboys (25) Who probably replaces Brandon Carr for the Cowboys

That are not many Safeties out there this Year in Free-Agency

The capper for this season will be if McCoy or Ertz or Cox or Kendricks suffers a serious injury but hey the genius is already on record saying we’re not evaulating anything it’s starters we need to win this one. I would treat this game like a glorified pre season game. Gotta get that 10-6. Just call off the dogs we know that the NFC south is bullshit so yes technically they should be in the playoffs but please please please no injuries Sunday.

Listening to Eskin and Hollis Thomas these 2 dopes need to call it a career, oh the Eagles will score more points then last year umm yes they have 10 special team and defensive td’s. Well they lead the league in turnovers umm how many of those turnovers were because of tighter coverage and congested running conditions? Well let’s face it Vick wasn’t going to be here long term he’s injury prone, so I guess Foles is an ironman? In retrospect last year everything went right, this year everything went wrong and I am being to harsh on Kelly but that’s only because I see him as a fraud.

actually the difference between this year and last shows just how fleeting success is in the league. It is what makes the NFL the best sports league- 4-12 to 10-6 in one year- this year a below 500 team will be in the playoffs and wouldn’t that be something if they made a run…

Is it just coach speak ,to praise fletcher with a straight face ..when everyone is looking for raw meat ? Is this an eye to the future by chip the snake oil salesman? Invitation for mediocrity? Or a landing spot for potential free agents who like that the head coach has there backs? I’m on the side of culpability…just wondering what we think collectively…I’ll say this ..I’ll take these comments with a brain of salt ,however ,if these two corners are both lining up to start next year ..I’m out..

comments from a coach should always be taken with a grain of salt– his actions this off season will tell you the truth, whatever that might be.

I agree 100% – Coach’s always have to be Guarded in their Comments
about their Players, Staff and Future Plans.. It’s just the way it is..

mock drafts around the internet

CBS – 20. Philadelphia Eagles – PJ Williams, CB, Florida State: Chip Kelly is famous for his offense but at Oregon, he also boasted playmaking corners. Williams, agile and aggressive, would fit in nicely.

Walterfootball – Philadelphia Eagles: Trae Waynes, CB, Michigan State
I’ve had several Eagle fans ask me if trading up for Marcus Mariota is a possibility. It’s not. The Buccaneers actually wanted to move up to No. 1 before they had the first pick because they’re desperate for a franchise quarterback, so they’re not going to suddenly surrender the top choice. From what I’ve gathered, I don’t even think three first-rounders would get it done for Philadelphia.

Here’s a more realistic option. The Eagles have a terrible group of corners, and Chip Kelly likes tall defenders like Trae Waynes.

Charlie Campbell

Philadelphia Eagles: Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State
The Eagles clearly didn’t do enough to address their secondary last offseason, and they’ll have to do something about that with some long-term solutions next year. Philadelphia needs help at both corner and safety.

In 2014, Darby has 37 tackles with four passes broken up and has a solid contributor on special teams as well. He was solid against Oklahoma State in the season opener. Darby is a fast cover corner who is put together well. He is skilled at not allowing separation.

Darby played well as a cover corner in the Seminoles’ secondary last year following Xavier Rhodes’ departure to the NFL. Darby (5-11, 189) had four passes broken up and two interceptions in 2013. He impressed in 2012 with eight passes broken up, 22 tackles and a forced fumble. Darby has natural cover-corner skills.

Kevin WHite WVU WR
Philly needs help in many areas but WR stands out. Jeremy Maclin is a Free Agent this spring, as are Smith and Jeff Maehl. Rookie Jardan Matthews has flashed at times but Riley Cooper is the worst WR in the NFL, at least that’s what ProFootballFocus.com’s proprietary statistics say. While not in Amari Cooper’s league, White could be the 2nd WR off the board.

Useless hogwash from you mhenski….

There are rookie CB’s that can come in and play in Bill Davis scheme going up against the top receivers like DJax, Bryant, or Nelson.

If the Eagles are keeping Bill Davis they better go hard after Revis in free agency!

The No#1 need on this team is Quarterback!

We need a QB with some talent, some mobility, and one that can stay on the field without being so injury prone

foolbreeze, are you as stupid as a fuck as you make yourself out to be, or you just doing this shit to piss people off, & for shock value? QB, although isn’t set for a SB run, but is way down on the todem poll, of NEEDS! We need 2 NFL quality corners, a FS, a MLB, an ROLB, a WR to replace DJax play set, RG, & then a QB, then depth. WTF are you smoking bruh? Put the wet down, & chill with your ignorant agenda already! It’s nauseating now!

P.J. Williams
CB, Florida State
Is there any doubt that the Eagles need to fix their secondary? There are still glaring holes at safety and cornerback, so the team needs to add the best available players at the position if they want to get better.
