Nick Foles And Chip Kelly Haven’t Spoken Since The End Of The Season

NickFoles&ChipKelly1Nick Foles was at the Super Bowl at Radio Row, and commented on recent rumors that have been surrounding himself and the Eagles’ quarterback situation.

The most interesting thing that came up was that Foles and head coach Chip Kelly haven’t spoken at all since the end of the season.

While Kelly has certainly been very busy with power struggles in the front office and interviewing countless general manager candidates that weren’t interested in working with him, it is a little odd that the head coach and quarterback haven’t had any interaction since the end of the season.

It’s worth noting that Kelly cut off all communication with DeSean Jackson following the end of the 2013-14 season, and ultimately ended up releasing him.

Obviously DeSean and Foles are very different situations.

One was a malcontent. The other simply wouldn’t have a future with the team if the head coach decides to mortgage the future for another quarterback.

But I don’t think the lack of communication between the two can be ignored or discounted.

I wonder how many times Coughlin has spoken to Eli.
I wonder how many times Peyton has spoken to Brees.
I wonder how many times McCoy has spoken to Rivers.
I wonder how many times Reid has spoken to Smith.
I wonder how many times Harbaugh has spoken to Flacco.

Ad Nauseum.

Just to review…..the season hasn’t even finished yet.

No questions about who is going to QB the Giants next year
No questions about who is going to QB the Saints next year
No questions about who is going to QB the Chargers next year
No questions about who is going to QB the Chiefs next year
No questions about who is going to QB the Ravens next year

The Eagles are not in the same situation as those other teams.

With all of the talk swirling around the Eagles QB situation, it is odd that the Coach can’t find two minutes to give Nick a phone call to say…’Hey…dont feed into all the bullshit you are hearing…we are behind you…we support you’

Eli, Brees, Rivers, Flacco dont need that conversation…the checks they have cashed speaks a lot louder than words from a coach!

Foles is done…he’s outta here!

Koolidiot writes:

“it is odd that the Coach can’t find two minutes to give Nick a phone call to say…’Hey…dont feed into all the bullshit you are hearing…we are behind you…we support you’”

Koolidiot says he knows Chip Kelly hasn’t made a phone call to Foles.

I make joke that now Koolidiot knows who Chip Kelly calls (or in this case doesn’t call) on the phone.

Koolidiot then confused.

Typical.

Foles says they “haven’t spoken too much”

You are the one who then turned that into “Kelly can’t find 2 minutes….” garbage.

When you have no idea whether he’s called Kelly or not.

Again, I called you on your pretend insider knowledge of who and when Chip Kelly makes telephone calls, and now you backtrack as usual.

Foles said – “We haven’t talked a lot. He has a lot going on,” “This time of year you really just get away from everything. He is busy looking at the draft, doing all that. I saw he is more of the decisions maker. Haven’t really talked to him too much, but I’m sure I’ll hear from him soon.”

Wow, three week without a call from Chip Kelly.

Foles is under contract for next year, I would think it’s more important for Chip to talk to Maclin.

As I recall, Chip did talk to DeSean, he told him “don’t worry about anything and keep working hard and be ready for camp.” Maybe it’s better Foles don’t hear from Chip….

According to a story on an Eagles website 215, a story written by Tim Kelly titled, Chip Kelly to Dine With Lesean McCoy Tonight, Discuss Contract. Apparently Chip is in Arizona to attend the Super Bowl and he and Lesean was scheduled to meet for dinner last night to discuss his contract situation.

On the same day that the Eagles announced that Ed Maryowitz would be Chip Kelly’s Vice President of Player Personnel, Chip Kelly reportedly is in Arizona for the Superbowl, and will meet with LeSean McCoy tonight.

This is interesting, because McCoy told McLane earlier today that he was not interested in taking a pay-cut. That said, McCoy’s problem isn’t his annual salary. He will make just under $10 million this year, according to Pro Football Talk. That isn’t cheap, but part of having established franchise icons is that you have to pay them. The biggest issue for McCoy is that he has a cap-hit just valued at $11.95 million in 2015. Assuming Adrian Peterson doesn’t return to Minnesota next year, that would be the largest cap-hit for a running-back in the NFL in 2015.

There’s a good chance that McCoy knew of his meeting with Chip Kelly when he made these statements, perhaps an indication that he viewed his interview with McClane as putting pressure on Kelly.

In most senses, McCoy has all the leverage. He’s the greatest running-back in franchise history, and despite what many would deem as a down year in 2014, was still third in the entire league in rushing yards. Also, Kelly alienated some with his move to release DeSean Jackson a year ago. It’s hard to think that he wants to start off his regime as head of player personnel by releasing a running-back still very much in his prime, that the fanbase adores.

McCoy, 27 before next season, has two years left on his current contract. His cap-hit goes down to $8.85 million in 2016 and even further down to $7.85 million in 2017. It seems likely that the Eagles could reduce this year’s cap-hit by spreading some of that money out over the next two years. Whether that move would prove to be beneficial for the franchise in the long-term remains to be seen.

For the record…
Jeff Maclane also tweeted that Lesean and Chip was having dinner last night to go over contract situation. Chip stated a couple of weeks ago that he wanted Lesean back. He never said that about Desean or found time to talk to Desean either.

I would love to see Frank Gore picked up by the Eagles
Trade McCoy, and get a couple of Picks, then go with a Backfield of Gore,Sproles & Polk for 2015 and Draft a RB (Abdullah) to groom for Sproles spot by 2016
Gore has 2 more Years at most, and probably can handle a load
of 15 Carries a Game, then Give Sproles 8-10 Carries with Polk another 5-7 Carries… Gore to run in-between the Tackles,
Sproles Runs the edges and goes out in Pass Formations and Polk in for the Short-Yardage/Red-Zone, Blocking.

EHL, I said it before last season McCoy was and still is the Eagles best player. IMO the down year of the offense had a lot to do with his struggles (oline injuries played a part) however I think he missed a lot of holes and struggled with living up to his own hype. Plus Shady has never been a straight ahead runner…his game is based off of his athleticism and cutbacks etc. I think at times when this offense bogged down is because he gave up 3-4 yard runs and turned them into 1-2 yard dazzling cutbacks etc that eventually got anything.

You can restructure him into next year and with Gordon walk away the year after that. And if Gordon is a certified gangsta in the backfield you can trade McCoy.

Ryan will also spend some time studying film. The plan is for Chip and Ryan will hook up when Chip returns.

As for Foles – he would have loved to talk to Chip, but when the season ended Nick and his wife took a well deserved vacation in Tahiti.

As I’m sure you are aware. Nick was born into a very wealthy family and has total financial security for life. In fact, koolbreeze pays more attention to Nick’s disposable (football) income than Nick himself.

My question is what players have had consistent communication with Chip since the season ended? If none, than the article is a waste of time. If many, besides Foles, than it raises eyebrows.

However, what also raises eyebrows is the amount of support Foles has received from his teammates. McCoy, Matthews and now Maclin have all showed support for Foles. Maclin discussed Fole’s struggles last season with the media. He mentioned the lack of having a consistent offensive line as an issue that may have given Foles issues. This falls in line with the comments made by other teammates regarding the inconsistent year Foles had this past season.

What is important, which Maclin hinted at, is the attention needed to be paid to the comradery between teammates. If there is no unity between teammates and continuity of players on a given team year in and year out, the team will not succeed no matter who is on it.

I believe this probably doesn’t mean much. It would be hard for Chip to let a quarterback go who, his teammates claim has all the tools to get it done. It may destroy the team chemistry. The team already rallies behind Foles. They may not do the same for a rookie.

No kidding Maclin supports Foles….have you net seen Maclin’s #s when Foles is the QB (going back to Reid)??

Historically there is an 50% chance Mariotta will be a complete bust and about 80% chance he’ll turn out to be nothing special. Players know this.

If Eagles trade Foles, bring in Mariotta and start the year 2-6 and and the fun will really begin.

@Desert I never said anything about Chip “smackin his gums.” Instead, I said we don’t know if he actually talks to anyone (any of the players) in the offseason. The article is based on the fact that Nick Foles hasn’t talked to Chip Kelly. The implication is that there is something wrong with Chip and Foles’ relationship because of this lack of communication. However, we have no idea if Chip has talked to any of his players this offseason. There is no indication whether Chip has talked to McCoy, Maclin, Matthews, Ertz, Peters, Johnson, Cox….etc. Therefore, we cannot say that it is a huge deal for Chip to not have been actively communicating with Foles. It could be just Chip being Chip.

Read what I wrote.

If it is true, what about the other 52 men on the roster? Does this then mean Chip is getting rid of everyone else because he is not having dinner with them? He needs to talk with McCoy because of his contract situation. The Eagles realize he’s not worth the money and he does also. Therefore, both sides know they need to restructure his contract.

tua, my point is that neither Shady or Foles’ contract is up for renewal. There is speculation about whether or not Shady will be back due to his salary for 2015, that is why people and the media are questioning his status. Evidently Chip felt compelled enough to sit with him and have a discussion over dinner. As it relates to Foles, the question is will he be back as the Eagles QB or will he be elsewhere due to Chip possibly wanting a Mariota or Hundley (God forbid). If he found time to meet with Shady, he can find a minute to talk with Nick to simply say”Hey, you’re my QB don’t listen to the rumors…I want you”. Chip told the media he wants Maclin, Ryans, and Lesean back for 2015. It would be simple for him to say the same about Nick. …but he hasn’t. When given the chance to endorse Nick..Kelly just said he has to watch and evaluate his tape….I call bull shit on that, you know if a player at that position who has started for you for is you’re guy or not. …stop stalling and hemming and hawing about it! When Jeff and Howie were given the chance to endorse Nick as the Eagles starting QB of the future, neither would touch it..in fact, Lurie’s comments regarding the matter luke warm at best. The Eagles have publically verbally endorsed players like Kendricks and Cox as future building blocks….the same has not been done for Nick.
I know some will read this and say oh the Eagles have not gotten in touch with Foles for this and that reason….all excuses though. Go back and check the thread, I have been an ardent supporter of Foles during the 2013-2014 seasons…more than his coach, that is for sure, but, looking at everything without my blinders on, I do not see the Eagles backing Foles like a team who knows that he is their guy would. That is the reason some fans and the media continues to speculate about Foles’ future…and Nick!
As for Shady, I think he is worth the money from a talent, locker room and team perspective, but hey, it’s not my money to spend. I do believe his contract will be restructured.

BTW – if they are looking at Mariotta, Hundley etc (and I am sure they are)…then why come out and say, “Nick is our guy” because when you trade him 4 weeks later, you look like an ass.

As for the “endorsements to other players….when asked if he wanted Maclin and Lesean back he said:

“But do I want Lesean back? Yeah. Do I want Jeremy back? Yeah. Is that the reality? I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Wow. Exciting!

In fact, in that same quote about wanting them back he also mentioned they’d consider trades if they were blown away, and he also said, “We’ll look at everything”

So he basically announced to the world they’d be looking at trades, contracts, production….everything in regards to those 2 players too…..same as Foles!

If Foles was a free agent this year and a reporter asked him if he wanted Foles back I guarantee you the answer would have been:

“Do I want Nick back? Yeah. Is that the reality? I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll look at everything.”

The exact same thing he said about Maclin and McCoy.

I figure he would have given the exact same answer for just about every free agent. Except maybe Sanchez. ‘Cause Sanchez stinks..

Continually ignored in the old, “we’ll evaluate any position” in Regards to Foles – again the same thing he said about Maclin and McCoy….was this line from the same press conference….:

“I think he’s continuing to grow as a quarterback. And that’s part of the maturation process in this league. Very rarely do you come in early and just light it up. I think you need to kind of almost do something and make that mistake and learn from that mistake. I think that is one thing I admire about Nick is he processes things out well. When he does make a mistake, very rarely does he make that same mistake twice. I think he needs to continue on the trajectory that he’s headed on right now.”

What’s that? AN acnolodgement that a young QB will make mistakes – in fact HAS to make mistakes as long as he fixes them? And that he is fixing them? And that he is on a good trajectory?

Thats weird.

But he didn’t announce that a guy who struggled over the first half of the season and was injured over the second would be the starter and that they’d start contract negotiations before the 2014 season has even ended?

That’s weird.

One thing I do know is this….Chip Kelly knows exactly who came in and saved his ass in 2013. No Foles and you think Kelly is being put in the position he is now? No way…..they were 1-4 and on the verge of a disastrous spiral had 27-2 not come along and saved his ass.

You do not allow your QB of the future get to FA…the Eagles history is that they lock up their building blocks. You are merely speculating as to what you are saying as it relates to this point because Chip has not said that about Nick, and if the Eagles truly value Nick as their future signal caller, he will not make it to FA.

And honestly HAC, I’m not to concerned about what Chip Kelly thinks about what is and is not silly. I think some of Chip’s philosophies about the draft are silly, if not outright ignorant. Chip is a good coach, he is not the be all to end all though. I am not ready to bow down to his alter yet…he needs to win something and beat some quality teams convincingly first to even get to Andy Reid status in my book.

If you are going to measure every word that Chip said, and think of them as having deep meaning then why do you discount his words about Foles — “He’s the starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years here,” – This is only year 998….

Why did Chip tell DeSean — “don’t worry about anything, just get ready for training camp”, less than a week before his release?

Maybe Foles is going to be traded, maybe not…but to think you can decode Kelly’s intentions based on who he talks to or eats with is stupid.

Then everyone on here is does this stupid thing. To many people on here think with their hearts, feelings and get caught up emotionally. I did the same with DJAX last year. I have emotionally divested myself out of this QB situation, that is why I can look at it more clearly. I am not going to quote stats and get into name calling conversations with Kool, songs, vinny or anyone else over this. I am looking at it differently.

Great point Irish.

DeSean thought he was safe. However, reality showed he wasn’t.

Chip talking to one guy while not talking to another means absolutely nothing. There is an implication that this article tries to touch upon that Foles is going to be released because he hasn’t talked with Chip. We have no idea what will actually happen.

And by the way – there was never a meeting between Kelly and McCoy in Phoenix…

Chip is in Phoenix on behalf of Tostitos. and was never slated to have dinner with LeSean McCoy, as reported by Jeff McLane.

On Thursday, Eagles running back LeSean McCoy said he is confident everything will workout with his contract this offseason and he should be back with the team.

Well, he might be about to get a little more clarity.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, head coach Chip Kelly is expected to arrive in Phoenix on Thursday night for Super Bowl week, and is slated to have dinner with McCoy.

Although the dinner could be anything from a business meeting to just a chance to catch up, Kelly’s new role as basically the general manager certainly adds a level of intrigue to the meeting.

While walking down radio row Thursday, McCoy insinuated too much was made of the fact that he is slated to count $11.95 million against the cap next season, the second highest total in the NFL for a running back.

“My thing is, that stuff will take care of itself,” McCoy said. “My mindset, I’m not even thinking like that.”

Speaking to the media back in December, Kelly said he wanted McCoy back, but wouldn’t call it a done deal.

“Do I want (McCoy) back? Yeah,” Kelly said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

It is unclear if quarterback Nick Foles, who is also in town for the Super Bowl, got an invite.

I still think Chip or someone should speak to nick about his situation, and yes part of it is because as a fan I want to know…can’t help but be curious and interested in the direction of this team. Either he is or he isn’t your guy. If it was McNabb in his 2nd or 3rd year, this would not be an issue.

By this time people should understand that sports reporters feel zero need to confirm the stories that they print.

So while McLane was tweeting that he was mistaken about McCoy having dinner with Kelly, Eliot Shorr-Parks was still reporting it as fact….

If you want to form opinions based on erroneous reports feel free. I will wait for Kelly to take action before I believe he plans to trade the starting QB.

To be honest I don’t know if Reuben is being facetious though. However, McLane just stated they did not have dinner in the Pheonix area, he did not say they did not have dinner.

Yep, I remember people clowning saying that Marshawn was a goner at season’s end because he’s a cancer, a bad guy, not a culture guy….blah blah blah, that talent speaks volumes, not to mention the Seattle fans love him and so does his team mates. I have gone on to Seahawks websites to see if Lynch was getting killed…they are turning him into a martyr. If he was on the Eagles some folks on here would be gnashing their teeth and bitching to get him out of town because he’s a bad guy. Apparently his behaviors are not so bad that they are ready to let him go as some on here boasted during mid season.

Congrats to Marshawn “BEAST MODE” Lynch…sign that contract Boss!

The Seattle Seahawks reportedly aren’t looking to turn “Beast Mode” off anytime soon.

Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported Marshawn Lynch, 28, has been offered a “huge” contract extension heading into Super Bowl XLIX:

The Seattle Seahawks not only want Marshawn Lynch around next year, but they’ve made a significant commitment to keep him on their team, possibly, for the rest of his career.

On the heels of another dominant season for the running back nicknamed ‘Beast Mode,’ multiple sources tell me Seattle has made Lynch an offer on a huge contract extension that would keep him in a Seahawks uniform for years to come.

The deal is believed to include more than $10 million for Lynch in the 2015 season alone. Lynch currently is slated to make $5 million in 2015, the final year of what originally was a four-year, $31 million deal.

The Seahawks believe that Lynch, who has rushed for at least 1,200 yards in each of the past four seasons, has outplayed his contract, sources say. They want to reward him for his work.

Lynch’s future has been up in the air for some time.

He held out in training camp before the 2014 regular season until the Seahawks gave him $1.5 million in guaranteed money by restructuring his existing four-year, $31 million contract.

Talent Wins..It’s about that talent! I guess he fits their culture after all.

New England challenged that Seahawk defense (28 pts). Because according to some on this site it’s the only reason why Seattle is relevant. Horrible playcall at the end. Great play on the ball by the db. he clearly wanted that pass more than the Seahawk wr.
