Eagles Rookie Free Agent Offensive Linemen May Be Surprises

MikeCoccia1The two rookie free agent offensive linemen, Mike Coccia and Malcolm Bunche, which the Eagles signed this off season, have a chance to make this football team.  They each grew up as Eagles fans in the Philadelphia area.

Coccia grew up in nearby Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and went to school at New Hampshire University, which is Chip Kelly’s Alma Mater.  His college football team ran the same uptempo style offense, which was developed by Kelly.

“Learning curve wouldn’t be as great for me,” said Coccia, who is 6-foot-3 and 302 pounds. “When I made the decision, that was the main factor. Pretty familiar with the scheme, the zone scheme, and if there was one scheme that would help me succeed in the NFL, it’s definitely this one.”

The young center, who at 6’3″ 302 pounds is the biggest center on the roster, can also slide out and play guard, which is the type of versatility that Kelly loves.  He’s used to playing in the offense, so that will help him when it comes to conditioning.

I like the fact that Coccia played basketball in high school and the youngster seems to have a good work ethic.  I saw that his sister was a world class gymnast with a great work ethic.  Usually work ethic is a family thing.  The parents teach the same work ethic to all their kids.

For all those reasons, I could see Coccia making this football team.

MalcolmBunche1Bunche has a factor in his favor as well.  He’s another local kid, who grew up idolizing Birds offensive tackle Tra Thomas in Newark, Delaware.

He was recruited by Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland to the University of Miami, where Bunched played 3 years, before he finished his career blocking at UCLA.  Stoutland saw something in Bunche, which he liked when he saw tape of him in high school.   Now he saw something he liked when he saw tape of him in college.  That’s an advantage, which Bunche may be able to take advantage of.

The youngster hit the nail on the head last Friday, when he was asked about what he learned from his first workout as an Eagle.  “I’ve got to get in shape”, the young Eagles offensive lineman said.  He’s 6’6″ 320 pounds and he had better get in shape, if he wants to play in a Chip Kelly offense.

He’s got the versatility that Kelly likes because he can play both guard and tackle, which could help him make this team, if he gets himself in shape.

The fact that the Eagles weren’t able to draft any offensive linemen could wind up being a tremendous break for both of these guys.

“It could be a blessing in disguise,” said Bunche referring to not being drafted.  He was able to choose which team he wanted to try out for.

“Talking with coach Stoutland, he told me, ‘You’re the one guy that we want to be here. We didn’t draft any lineman, so you have to make a name for yourself. You’ve got to put in the time and effort in the weight room and the film room and show that you want to be here.’

“And that’s what I’m going to do,” Bunche said.

Hopefully Bunche comes out and shows everybody that he belongs in the National Football League.

They’re definitely in the right place from an opportunity standpoint because the Eagles have the oldest offensive line in the NFL.  All-Pro’s Jason Peters and Evan Mathis along with projected starters Allen Barbre are all above 30 of age.

Last year, despite opportunities their backups Matt Tobin, Andrew Gardner, Dennis Kelly and Julian Vandervelde were unable to prove they can play in the NFL.  If one of the offensive linemen goes down, these rookies could be the guys who Kelly turns to when he looks to his bench.

The Eagles next year have no choice but to attempt to grab at least 2 Offensive Lineman- 1 Guard, and 1 Tackle. I really like:

Ronnie Stanley – 6-5 315 Tackle – Notre Dame – Round 1
Laremy Tunsil – 6-5 310 Tackle – Ole Miss – Round 1
Vadal Alexander – 6-6 342 Guard – LSU – Round 1-3

Cliff, all three of those guys are very good prospects, however, the Eagles will probably be drafting in the early twenties again. Stanley, and if healthy Laremy Tunsil will be long gone by then. I think Vadal Alexander will be around for them to take if they want him in the second.

We don’t have a 2nd Round pick Eagle, thanks to the Genius…

But, I think the Eagles will be in position to get at least one of the Tackles, and Alexander if he is available in the 3rd.

We also still need a Pass Rush. I have to have Justin Houston in Free Agency if he is healthy.

Ahh yes, the Rams snookered…I mean received our second round draft pick for Sam Glassford..hmm. Chip still should try to find a way to get a 2nd round pick. That is a hurt piece.

I agree Eagle. I hope we can still get a 2nd for Kendricks, and maybe even another 1st for Fletcher Cox if Kelly still wants to part with him, because Tyler Boyd, along with Agholar, and Matthews would be a formidable WR Core.

Tyler Boyd WR, and Laremy Tunsil OT in the 1st

Jacoby Brissett QB, and Vadal Alexander OG in the 2nd

and Tony Connor S/CB in the 3rd, would be an awesome draft.

Kendrick very unlikely to ever return a 2nd Round Pick which is where he was Selected, Cos is doubtful as well as returning a 1st Round PIc, which is where he was selected
You have to remember that Players rarely ever return the same Value or ROund in which they were Selected.. It just hardly ever happens.. Teams place more Value of the Unknown or Potential that a Draft Pick may turn out to become more so that what us a known commodity in terms of what a Player brings…
By the 4th/5th Seasons of a Players Career, chances are if that Player hasn’t become an All-Pro or dominant, impact Player by that stage, he is unlikely to do so..
Both Kendricks and Cox are very good Players with still some upside, but being realistic is understanding that they will never return the value of where they were Drafted for it just rarely happens with any Players in the NFL

Agreed Paulman….no one is giving up high draft picks for guys wanting a huge contract. Plus Kendricks has not shown that value.

Paul, remember you also said Bryce Brown wasn’t going to return a 3rd round pick, and what did he return….a 3rd round pick…

If Jacksonville is desperate enough because of the injury to Fowler, and a lack of talent at that position – They MIGHT – you can’t even say not likely – because it is more possible than not……..on top of the fact you’ve been wrong on this stuff before too many times…

How is the free agent class looking at OL for next year?

I don’t expect Chip to open the wallet for the top guard or tackle, but are there any “B” level names tha would fit the system?

They easily move up into the second round next year with that extra 3rd.

Boykins is probably getting them a conditional pick if he gets squeezed out of the rotation as well.

I agree GMCliff on Guard D Russell,
It’s going to take a good 2-3 Years before he adjusts to the NBA Game
This NBA Draft Class is marginal at Best as far as Pure Point Guards go
Not sure there is any plug n play type ofPlayers this Draft
I hope 76ers don’t reach for a PG and take the Best Player Available regardless of Position, it’s it’s a big man or PF, so be it and stock up on them..

DeAngelo Russell steps on the floor and provides shooting Day 1. He may struggle as a distributor initially but he can contribute and open the floor with his shooting day 1.

Come on Paulman are you saying Mike Conley just because he went to OSU?

Just look at the playoffs it’s a coincidence that outside of John Wall shooting and scoring from the PG position is the new trend in the NBA.

Irving Lowry Curry Conley Paul are not athletic marvels at all.

Paulman Conley is one of my favorite players in the NBA and IMO one of the most underrated players in the NBA. So I have a very high opinion of his game. However Conley is a throwback he is a pure point that effective off the pick and roll etc but his mentality is to get the offense moving first not getting his shot.

Russell is a 6’5 combo guard scorer. He would be a poor mans Steph Curry or he fills out his body he could Chauncey Billups(Russells range is much better) if you had to pick a player. He has NBA shooting range and is great with the ball in his hands and off pick and rolls. On a team like the Sixers he would flourish because they base their system from the inside out and he would compliment Embiid/Noel etc. I watched a ton of him honestly to rule him out as not being another Evan Turner. If his jump shot wasnt as good as it right now I would stay away from him.

Mudiay may have more potential because of his physical skills but he will have a much longer transition to the NBA. He can get to the basket and finish against contact but he is not a threat on pick and rolls and his outside jumper is a work in progress. His comparison is to Derrick Rose.

I would be fine with either. Getting Russell would be comparison wise to getting Jabari Parker last year. Getting Mudiay would be getting Andrew Wiggins. You cant lose either way but they bring to very different styles and have much different adjustment curves.

Russell with the addition of Embiid would have this team fighting for the 8th spot. I dont know how I feel about that yet good or bad.

Thnx for the Info on Russell..
I like Mike Conley too… Didn’t he grow up in Indianapolis ?
Anyways if the 76ers can come out with a top flight PG would be great
and if that Guard can score, then so much the better, but I think they need a
facilitator at PG more than a Scorer to get the ball down to the Post (Noels/Embiid) and feed those Wing Scorers (Covington, Wroten, etc,etc)..

We wont know the picks until May 19th. If a team from the back of the lottery jumps into the top 3 which lately seems like a common occurrence then the Heats pick may fall to the Sixers.

Also if the Thunder are intent on resigning Enes Kanter then the Sixers look like a trade partner to take spare parts and their first round pick regardless.

IJ I know you are a fan of the multiple tanks but you say that you don’t know how you’d feel if they competed for the final playoff spot? I don’t understand that… they will have at least 3/5 of the ‘core’ plus saric so thats 4/5, plus isn’t grant and another guy whose name escapes me will be on the team…isn’t it time to start a culture of winning? learning how to win?

HAC regardless of winning you need star players. At least one superstar player. Theres already rumblings in Boston for him to trade all of his picks etc for a star(Danny Ainge).

Look at the playoffs its virtually 2-3 on every team in the West and in the East Lebron has Irving and Love throw in Smith Shumpert etc. The Bulls have Rose…Jimmy Butler is on the verge of being a breakout star and is already one of the best two way players in the game.

Theres 8th seed winning and theres top 4 team in the conference winning. The former is what would be the Sixers.

I prefer Russell because I believe in Noels potential as well and that could be a dynamic pairing making Noel the Joakim Noah do all the little things defensive presence. Saric could be huge though.

I also think the next years free agent summer the Sixers could be in a great position if they have multiple picks and young players.

I know I sound all over the place. Im a huge Sixers fans been that way all my life…but I am very realistic. I dont want to the be the Washington Wizards…with one star and a couple of maybes that are overpaid and stuck at the 4 5th seed. However I do like the Bucks model. The draft is going to be where we get our franchise player from IMO. Hopefully its Embiid.

Its boom or bust with me.

Monty Williams was a stepping stone coach. He was good to the franchise and likewise but they have to take another step with Davis and it will probably be a whole philosophy and regime change.

As for Scotty Brooks the Thunder peaked under Brooks and he was at the point of repeating his same old mantras etc and it fell on deaf ears with him. The Reggie Jackson fiasco played a part and injuries have killed the Thunder…however Scotty Brooks was becoming this decades version of Flip Suanders and the Thunder are the KG/Marbury TWolves. On top of that they really need to make a move or at risk of losing Durant possibly.

The Thunder may be at a crossroads. I dont know how long the Westbrook Durant pairing stays together.

Now I would trade the next 5 years worths of drafts for Westbrook lol.

Isnt Embid Olajuwan? Noel as you say seems to have potential as you state and Saric looks good… do you just keep tanking till some pick happens to be a star? there aren’t superstars in every draft…. at some point you have to develop your number 1 picks into winners or you end up being the clippers of old… always in the lottery
