Eagles Add Deep Threat In WR Chris Givens

ChrisGivens1I’ve loved the moves that Howie Roseman and the Birds have made so far this off season.  Yesterday’s signing of deep threat wide receiver Chris Givens doesn’t get me too worked up, but he does have the deep speed that the Birds need.  They’ve been missing that blazer outside since Chip Kelly gave away DeSean Jackson.

A deep threat serves a key role in that he will stop the safeties from creeping up into the box.  Not only will the safeties not creep up into the box, they’ll back up a few steps if they feel threatened by a receivers speed.

Givens ran a 4.41 numbers of years ago, but he’s says he’s faster than that.  We’ll see.

You know that Sam Bradford’s approval of this signing played a part in it.  Givens had the best year of his career while playing with Bradford in St. Louis during his rookie season.  In that campaign, Given caught 42 passes for 698 yards for a 16.6 average with three touchdowns.

That’s not bad for a rookie, but it does trouble me that he didn’t improve on those numbers.  Still you can see the big play ability in this guy.  Givens has pulled down 107 catches for a total 1,779 yards.

Last year, Givens averaged 18.2 per catch for the Ravens, which is outstanding.  Unfortunately, he only caught 19 passes a year ago, but that lofty average per catch has the numbers from a not excited me.

Again, I like the fact that the Eagles are working together as a unit in putting together this roster.

Garry, Don’t be too worked about the Eagles moves so far. After all of the F.A. signings out of Philly , The vegas bookmakers have now installed them as a team whos’ chances of getting a ring this year, are now actually worse than before ,the new or different players signed in F.A. agency.Who says you cant build / destroy a team thru FA.?

Want kook twit to once again his complete flip-flop.

Wrs in STL (givens) were all terrible and the reason Waterford sucked, but now the givens signing is an “excellent addition”

How can a guy who was part of a group you once slagged mercilessly now be “excellent.”

Bradford never threw deep with Givens before, he’s not going to start now.

Eagles now with the least cap space of any nfl team from 2017 to 2020 with two giant elephants in the room.

1. Fletcher cox
2. No starting qb after this season.

Even if, on the 5% chance it happens, Sammy sevens is actually decent….then what?

How do you sign a qb and cox when the team has no space to do so for the next 4 years.

LMAO!!

Desperate and Delusional…

Once again, Vinniedafoolass is simply incapable of any thought that requires the ability to contextualize, to understand situations and circumstances. Dizzy from his own flip-flopping…he ignores credible stats when they dont fit his own narrow and incoherent assertions.

As GCobb mentions in his article, Givens is a deep threat that the Eagles simply did not have at all on the team. And for all of the garbage spewed by the Sam Bradford haters…and the ‘stats’ that Vinniedafool likes to spew here is one that he simply misses about Givens:
“Established an NFL rookie record for most consecutive games with a reception of 50-or-more yards”

Guess who the QB was…Sam Bradford…which simply tells us…if a receiver is open deep and Sam is laying on his back because of the pass rush…he can clearly throw it deep!

“Rams selected him in the fourth round that season, and his best two years as a pro came with Bradford in 2012 and part of 2013” Philly.com

Is he a No#1 receiver….NO…is he an upgrade from that bum ass Riley Cooper…YES…Is he an All-Pro receiver that most of the great Quarterbacks have to work with…NO…is he faster than anyone that Bradford has played with on the Eagles…YES

For what is available on the market, looking at the draft…is it an excellent pickup…ABSOLUTELY!

Vinniedafool…give up…and fall back…your finished!

2012: (with St. Louis – 15/12) Led the Rams in receiving yards (698), yards-per-catch average (16.6) and receptions of 25-or-more yards (8) as a rookie…Set career highs in catches with 42 and TD receptions with 3…Established an NFL rookie record for most consecutive games with a reception of 50-or-more yards

Per Spotrack, WR Chris Givens Signed a 1 Year Deal with a Base Salary
of $760,000 with a $80,000 Signing Bonus for a Total of $840,000

I would the Eagles to look to Release or Maybe Trade some Back-Ups PLayers to free-up some Cap Space if they wanted to add some Space

Safety Chris Maragos is now probably a 4th String Safety at $1.7 Million for 2016 with a $200,000 Cap Hit if he gets cut

LB Bryan Braman is at $975,000 with a $75,000 Cap Hit if he gets released

OL Andrew GArdner is at $1.35 Million with a $300,000 Cap Hit
OL Dennis Kelly is at $790,000 with Zero Cap Hit

The Question becomes, are you replacing this Players with anyone Cheaper? Besides any Draft Picks, any other NFL Veteran Acquisition will cost similar or possibly more..

I see them cutting Gardner, Kelly, Allen Barbre, and Ed Reynolds, who are all garbage, and can be upgraded through the draft, and UDFA signings.

I also see the Eagles drafting better pass rush options, and dealing Brandon Graham – who stinks

Connor Barwin will be exclusively a DE per Jim Schwartz, and should be put on notice as well.

I agree and can see a Draft Day Trade involving Brandon Graham or Connor Barwin since neither are really Jim Schwartz’s type of long, lean DE… Maybe Howie can Trade 1 of these Players along with a 3rd Pick (#77 or #79) to be able to move up into the 2nd Round perhaps which is hard to do..
Everyone loves 2nd Round Picks ..
It be may be easier use one of them + a 4th Round Pick to move into the 3rd Round ..

I like the OG Brooks signing. The eagles made another high priced addition in McLeod. Not as exited about that move.
The rest of the signings are part timers and special teamers. ( McKelvin, Brooks, Bradham, Givens, Daniels )

Thnx Regal, it is a Fun Sport to Play..
We Won Big 10-3 and had a blast, I got thru the game with no pulls or injuries!!!
It’s 7 vs 7 and and we have 10 Players so we have 3 Subs to Rotate in and out which was good ..We play 2 30-Minute Halves with running clock, It’s a different game playing on the Turf fields, it’s fun, fast paced with lots more Scoring Opportunites… I’m the oldest Player on the Team
at 52, but 4 other Players are in the 40’s, and then we have some Younger guys in their 20’s so it’s a pretty good mix.. Softball starts in about another month so my legs should be feeling pretty good by then… I’m glad to have the opportunity to play ball again..

I think the Eagles and their fans need to pump there breaks on declaring so many players not being any good. Has anyone ever been at work and try to concentrate or do there job while they are physically and mentally tired? I heard a very interesting point about the Eagles WR which essentially translates to the oline and the rest of the team. He said these receivers go hurry up all week at practice then they are asked to sprint on game day on there routes then back to the LOS and continue to do this so they get tired and there concentration naturally isn’t as sharp as a team that huddles up thus the drops, thus the not running the exact routes because of fatigue. Maybe the oline slowing it down and actually huddling up helps the oline. Maybe the audibles helps the backup lineman. Maybe the defense not knowing the plays helps the Gardners of the world. I know LJ and Peters are ecstatic that the hurry up is gone. Just a thought.

Agree with this point. Hurry up is great for situations ( end of half, change up a struggling Offense). But should not be the norm.

givens blows. and for all the peeps that want to see he is a deep threat we didnt have, he is no faster than matthews or Agholor.

there are rumors amendola could be cut, im not a fan of him mostly because all he does is operate underneath and always is hurt but he would be perfect for checkdown sammy in the slot.

givens is fine as a 4th or 5th wr but nothing more. his upside is 35 catches, 500 yards and 4 tds

I agree Big Mhenski.

I view him basically as a potential – potential – replacement for Josh Huff on the roster. I can’t see Huff as a part of this receiving Core going forward because he blows as well.

I really hope they go after Josh Gordon, as opposed to someone like Amendola.

Josh Gordon is 1 more Offense, Arrest or Suspension away from a Life-Time Ban from the NFL.. Not many Teams (like the Eagles) in the NFL, are going to Pursue him..

Depends on his willingness to sign a minimal contract with exit clauses for team and incentives for behavior.

Problem is if it’s untreated addiction then he will agree to anything and still may mess it up.

I also expect the Redskins to consider DeSean Jackson as a Cap Caualty, opening the door for DeSean, Josh Gordon, Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor,Chris Givins, and possibly a rookie – my choice would be Tajae Sharpe of UMass – to replace Josh Hush by cutting him, or trading him to Chip.

Now our WR core is legit……

Its simple…is he better than Riley Cooper?

If the answer is YES, than you have improved your receiving core

Is he a No#1 receiver….NO…

Is he an All-Pro receiver that most of the great Quarterbacks have to work with…NO

Is he faster than anyone that Bradford has played with on the Eagles…YES

Good low risk, high reward pickup for the Eagles…if he sucks…cut him…but he doesn’t have to do much to be better than Riley Cooper!
