Sixers Youth Will Be Affected By Lockout

It’s nearly occurred 20 times between the four major sports leagues. Some instances lasted longer than others, whereas a few of them lasted just a few days. With varying reasons for the disputes, ranging from television ad revenues to player salaries, there’s no way to completely estimate the timeframe for a resolution to be reached.

The NFL took a couple of months to finally reach a compromise just in time for a shortened training camp to ensue and no loss of regular season games.

But unlike the NFL, the NBA is far off of an agreement. In fact, the owners and players are regressing in talks, rather than progressing. Because of this, every player around the league –from recently drafted rookies to the gritty veterans on the hardwood—is trying to find a way to compensate for what could be a very long winter.

Some players, even a few high-profile players (Deron Williams, Tony Parker, Andrei Kirilenko) and possibly the five-time champion Kobe Bryant, have resorted to heading overseas. Now whether or not they make a permanent living out of playing in Europe or Russia is to be seen, but the fact that these players are preparing to play on another team, having to learn a new offense with new teammates, could wind up affecting the overall competition of the NBA once an agreement is reached.

On a local note, the Philadelphia 76ers currently have four players making their rounds overseas. LaVoy Allen is heading to France, Craig Brackins is off to Israel, Darius Songalia left for Turkey, and first-round draft pick Nikola Vucevic will play in Montenegro.

Now that’s great to hear that they will be playing despite a possible cancellation of the NBA season, but what about the starting five and the youth on this team that displayed promise here-and-there last season?

As it stands now, the Sixers’ roster features 10 players under the age of 25. There’s definitely going to be some repercussions for these players if a cancellation of the season ensues.

Last year’s first-round pick, Evan Turner, struggled to make the adjustment from college ball to pro ball, but in some games last year, Turner flashed glimpses of hope, proving that he can be a contributor for this team. But with a lockout withstanding, his development will almost certainly take a hit. He’ll be unable to develop chemistry with his teammates on the court and more importantly, experience live game situations that can’t be replicated in an indoor practice gymnasium.

And as for the future face of the franchise, Jrue Holliday will feel the ramifications of a lockout. Last season, Holliday saw an increase in minutes (+11.2 MPG) and doubled his assists totals from his rookie campaign. Holliday started to heat up near the end of the season, averaging more assists, more turnovers, and fewer turnovers following the All-Star break. His progression will be halted and will have to wait until an agreement is reached, which could be next season.

Other young players on this team – Jodie Meeks, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams, Spencer Hawes – will all have to work even harder than they normally do because of the lockout. Meeks became an instant fan-favorite after he proved to be a reliable three-point shooter last season, and like Holliday, he saw an increase in his scoring figures after the All-Star break, averaging 12.2 PPG. Young has blossomed into one of the best sixth man in the league, scoring 12.7 PPG in 26 MPG.

The Sixers are still a year or two away from becoming a threat in the Eastern Conference, but that was before the lockout.
Once the NBA season finally resumes, the veteran teams – Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, New York Knicks – will be more prepared for the season since they have already developed chemistry with each other, whereas the Sixers will be two steps behind once the season begins because of their youth.

Simply put, the lockout will put the Sixers in a hole, possibly another two or three more years until they become a formidable opponent.

Who gives a crap! Until they fix what these overpaid, untradeable, can’t play, cry babies, it doesn’t matter. Sixers blow anyway, & won’t be $#!t until Iggy & Brand are gone, & they rebuild. Same crap, over & over again, just like the Birds!

I love Dei Lynam, there is something about her that attracts me, maybe two things 🙂

But the sixers have Will Smith apart of the organization now,he has a share similar to how Jay z has a share in the nets… This leads me to believe that the sixers will get Dwight Howard here in philly.. Some how some way Dwight Howard will be a Sixer…

That would be awesome if Dwight Howard became a Sixers and would make them a real contendor in the East .. .

In all honest, the sixers made the playoffs so there already contenders they just need a superstar like a dwight howard to bring buzz to the team and to the city… i see it happening… we desperately needa dominant center too..

C’mon Jon,
Making the Playoffs as a 5th/6th/7th/8th Seed in the East does not make you a Contenders to compete for a Champioonship.. I am talking about being one of the Top Seeds and a real contendor for a Championship, not just being happy or satified to make the Playoffs…

Your a contender if you make the playoffs. If you miss the playoffs your debating whether you wanna go to costa rica or cancun… my point is if the sixers get dwight howard then they will certainly put themselves in a better position to win a title, there already contenders… whether your the 1st seed or the 8th. You still gotta play the games..

16 of the 32 teams make the playoffs in the NBA JH and not all playoff teams are Contendors . maybe the top 3-4 Teams in each Conference have are what you classify as legitimate Contendors, not the bottom feeders that fill out the schedule and brackets…

Paul so your telling me there hasnt been quote on quote upsets? For example since i dont pull stuff out of my butt, How many years have the mavs led the league in wins during the regular season yet were eliminated from the first round of the playoffs… this year they finally broke thru but all the years prior they were top seeded but were a huge disappointment come playoff time… As long as you make the playoffs you are a contender. #period…

The sixers need a dominant center like dwight howard who is actually more of a defensive player over offensive and is a double double machine…allhe ll have to do here is rebound and defend the basket along with some highlight dunks to get the crowd jumping…

They winners are going to come from the top 3-4 Seeds, it’s very rare that a 7th/8th Seed is going to win or upset 2-3-4 series along the way to become Champions.. C’Mon Man, get your stuff together…The Sixers can upset a team or two, but not to the Finals…
When I or most people state a “:Legitimate Contender” for a Championship for any Sport, I mean legitimate team with a real shot and not just any team that happens to make the Post-Season..

You mentioned any sport… so the packers of last year dont count huh? They were a wild card with everything against them yet they won the superbowl.. all the odds in the world… road game after road game.. cmon guy… if you make the playoffs in any sport anything can happen… yes the teams with the best record in the regular season are ranked #1 or so but that has no baring when the playoffs start anything can happen… everyone that makes the playoffs is a contender if you dont then your not… what dont you understand about that?

Everyone knows the Packers were hot coming into the playoffs and were playing very well the last 5-6 weeks of the season where most of the NFC were struggling down the Stretch, (Falcons,Eagles,Saints)
If you don’t win your division you r automatcially a 5th or 6th Seed which is not indicative on what type of team the Packers had coming in.. but FOotball is a sport where a lower see can get hot (GIants as example) and get on a roll to get to a Championship or SUper Bowl.. You win 2-3 games and your in
Winning 2-3 Series where they are best of 7 Games is probably a better indicator of the better team moving on where FOttball it;’s one and done which makes the playoffs very unpredictavle and just shows the importance of the regular season being just 16 games lonf that every game counts and matters as opposed to NBA,NHL, and MLB where the play for 6 months long

Paul, we ll agree to disagree… i still say what ever the sport when the playoffs start its a new season and all are in a special group and will have a chance at least 7 times per series to advance… there all contenders for the championship…

Im sure we ll agree that Dwight Howard would be a great fit on this team… And with the new owners including Will and Jada Smith this may happen…

JH, are you telling me that half of these stiff teams that make the playoffs, a lot of them with losing records, are real contenders!? Just when I thought your delusions of Bron Bron, were bad enough! Come on dude, do you REALLY know B-Ball!? Stop it already! I agree with you that Howard would instantly make us one of the better teams in the East! But this isn’t NBA 2K11 on PS3, where you can make ridiculous transactions! How do you expect to get him!? We have no cap room, because of the disgusting, overpaid contracts to Iggy, Brand & Williams! Nobody wants those f^#@ing bums. Do you think Howard would come here for food stamps & a free subscription to the jelly of the month club!? Wake up. dream is over! The Sixers need a dominant center, NO $#!t! I need to be a millionaire, but neither are happening, anytime soon!

DCar. There are ways we could manuver a deal. We have plenty of pieces. Dwight has ot signed his extension, the team will be forced to get something for him because he will leave after the season…therefore i see the sixers offering a few 1st rounders and a player or two for the man… These new owners for the sixers are hungry, they wanna leave there mark, and along with the star power of Will smith, there gonna make a big splash. Watch. And yes i know basketball, i ve played and watched it all my life. The deal isnt outrageous. We ll be giving up alot for a young big man but i ll be worth it… Go to newsixersowner.com and voice your feelings about the team to the new owners….
