New “O” Line Coach Jeff Stoutland Wants A Physical Offensive Line

JeffStoutland5I told you I liked the decision Chip Kelly and the Eagles made in hiring offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland from the Alabama Crimson Tide to coach the Birds offensive line here in Philadelphia.  After meeting him today, I don’t just like that decision I love this decision.

This dude is into that “Hardcore Football”, which we like here in Philadelphia.  Yes they maybe hurrying to the line, but when they get there, Stoutland wants to see some of that old fashioned winning the battle at the line of scrimmage.  He sounded like just what the doctor ordered.

I knew a lot about Stoutland, when I saw the way the Crimson offensive line have been playing for the last few years.  Their offensive line played tough, aggressive football all the way to the whistle.  Not dirty football, but tough football.  His offensive lines rarely made mistakes, but were consistent about burying their opposition before the refs blew the whistle.

“Whether they’re run blocking or pass blocking it must be physical”, Stoutland responded a few times to a number of questions about what kind of play he likes.  “Everything we do with want to be physical.”

When I asked him how he felt when his big boys upfront for the Crimson Tide were mauling the Notre Dome front seven in the National Championship game, Stoutland had to swallow and start talking about how everybody had a hand in what happened during that game.

He’s already big on left tackle Jason Peters and said he had his left tackle at Bama looking at tapes of Peters this past season and trying to imitate his game. He loves the athleticism which Peters has played with in the past.

Stoutland also had good things to say about Jason Kelce and even Danny Watkins.

As you might expect, Stoutland can’t wait to get the chance to work with his players.  We can’t wait either.

Truer words have not been spoken Regal.. I know there are a lot of questions in regards to Danny Watkins desire to play football, but can this be the guy to get him going? I have been saying for a while that a new o line coach could be the best thing to happen to him. If he does turn it around, it’s a huge bonus this year. One less need the birds have to fill

Ditto Regal Eagle,
I have to believe that Guard Evan Mathis is an odd man out, who is more of a finesse, leverage and technique blocker than a physical player..
If they can draft 2 OL (1 OT and 1 Guard) and then Coach up Kelce and Watkins, then the Eagles may be onto something
Imagine if they can add OT Eric Fisher who is nasty as they come for RT
And get Guard Larry Warford.. This could be a nasty bunch minus Mathis & Herrenans..

Paul, we need more high round picks, for that to happen, & still get high quality defensive help too. But from what I heard from Kelly yesterday, we might not be trading anyone. Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but he doesn’t even know what kind of personnel we have yet, or what kind of DF, he is going to run right away. This is going to be a completely wasted year. I have ZERO confidence now, especially with Rosebuds helming the ship.

Kelly has zero say in the roster, just like he said –sat back and listened against the wall in the Eagle draft room
Howie is addicted to trading — there will be moves made with draft picks and players
Howie traded his first round pick to move up, a 2nd rounder to move back and a 3rd round flip flop switch of picks last draft while trading for Ryans, traded away a 4th rounder to get Cox and Ryans then traded to get a 4th rounder back by trading back to get Curry —-then traded away Assante for a 7th

I’ve been saying this all off-season Paul. That I wanted Larry Warford, and DJ Fluker, as my new PHYSICAL Guards replacing, and Overrated Mathis, and Danny Watkins.

I think Danny Watkins should be trained to back up Kelce; He isn’t physical enough at the point of attack. Travis Fredricks is a mean, smart PHYSICAL Guard, at 6-4 335lbs that can play Center, from Wisconsin, that should be given consideration in the draft as well.

That would be a hect of a line to see. Do you think they go oline in 2 of the first 3 rounds?

Only if they are able to acquire some additional Draft Picks by trading a couple of Players (maybe a Trent Cole, Jeremy Maclin and Cullen Jenkins)
Which is probably unlikely,
One big area that concerns me is the lack of physicality at the WR Position
When watch Oregon games, they run a lot of slants, bubble routes,
Inside routes that I just don’t see D-Jax/Maclin or Johnson being able to handle too often due to their lack of size and softness

paulman

February 12, 2013 12:48 pm

Yes, his final Season under his Rookie Deal which is a very reasonable Salary level which is why his Trade Value will probably never be higher in my opinon.. Could probably get a High 3rd Round Pick in Return because of his relatively low Salary versus his consistent Production
(He will be a Free-Agent after 2013 and most likely look to move closer to home in MIssouri and I see him landing at the SL Rams for 2014 which is why I Trade him this Season)
I have never sensed that he has felt all that comformtable in Philly and seems to have a frosty relationship with D-Jax & Vick at best..

There is also Guard/Tackle named Quessenberry who will be on the board in the 4th Round they can grab who probably projects as Guard in the NFL
Who I like very much
One thing for sure, the Eagles will have a more Physical Style of play from the Offensive Line and get away from this pussyfied-foot finesse techniques schenes that Howard Mudd ran the last 2years.. Mathis and Herremabs are provably goners, this will be Watkins last chance to prove he is a quality BFL which I expect him to do well under Stoudtland
Mudd had Watkins thinking too damn much

** Bills release ILB Nick Barnett and Safety George Wilson
Barnett has had 2 very Productive Seasons with the Bills on losing Team and appears to have returned 100% from Knee Injury that ended his Pacjers Career
Has lots of Experience as an ILB in the 3-4 Scheme
Probably is not the Pass-Cover LB he was when younger but could be a 1 year Stio-GP at ILB along with Ryan’s and then keep Kendrick’s as OLB on the Weak Side and then add a big Strong-side OLB in the Draft or sign Ravens Paul Krueger in free-agency

Did Oregon run a lot of 3 wr sets? If they can land a tall, physical receiver they could move Maclin to the slot, where he played quite a bit toward the latter half of the season. He played pretty well there. Mac just seems to be some what of a head case. He seems extremely arrogant in his interviews. I do think he can ball tho.

The receiver would obviously come from the draft, can’t spend much more money on the receiving corps

paulman

February 11, 2013 9:06 pm

Also the Draft will depend on how Free-agency goes and what the Eagles do about Asmo & DRC, from all signals, Eagles are looking to Re-sign DRC and believe that Admo will restructure his Contract like Vick ended up doing..
If this Occurs, and than they add a Safety & LB in Free-Agency
Then maybe their first few Picks of the Eagles Draft are some OL
Which long term may be a way to go. If they drafted OT Eric Fisher and then got Guard Warford you could have an OL
From L-R of Peters, Watkins, Kelce, Warford and Fisher
Possibly keep Herremans as 3rd OT and Swing Guard
But at a reduced Salary, then maybe trade Mathis for a 4th/5th Rounder

Don’t be all that surprised that Kelly and his QB Coach work with Vick in Kelly’s
Watered down fast paced Oregon system with Vick while Shurmur works with Foles as a more pocket/West Coast System and see packages where both QB’s will play based on opponent, score and the flow of a game..

In Delaware the Post Office automatically rejects Junk Mail. I don’t want that Crap.

You can send me a poster of DJ Fluker & Larry Warford as Philadephia’s Professional Tail Kickers, I’ll accept that.

I’m also going to start the call for Delanie Walker to be signed by the Eagles in Free Agency, and trade or cut Clay Harbor, and also draft Michael Williams TE from Alabama.

Imagine Fluker/Warford as a Guard Tandem… some major Road Graders..
TE Delanie Walker would be an excellent pick-up.. great blocker, versatile, can play all over the place.. Harbor just doesn;t seem to have it.. He shows glimpses, but just not consistent or strong enough.. TE M Williams from Bama is a beast who has great hands and wasn’t utilized very much by Alabama’s Offense and will surprise some folks in Indy Combine/Workouts.. He’s not the Deep Threat but in the intermediate routes, Red-Zone and short-yardage situations to block would be a great Pick-up.. Probably a 4th Rounder, maybe still on the Board in the 5th Round

You read my mind about going after Delanie Walker. He has solid versatility at the TE position and is a major upgrade over Clay Harbor who cant block for his life. And even tho we havn’t seen a Chip Kelly NFL offense yet, I have a feeling that this guys skills would be perfect for our offense since he can get up and down the field and pretty much do everything really well esp block…

Let’s hope they pull off a few trades, for 2-3 more picks, in the top 3 rounds! Me, I’d trade back with Rams, for their 2 1st’s & 3rd rounders, then try & pry KC’s 2nd &/or 3rd, from them for Maclin/ Cole/ Herremans? We need muliple picks. With those trades, we can end up with- 1st 2 of either Jessee Williams/ Zeke Ansah/ Xavier Rhodes- 2nd DJ Fluker & Larry Warford- 3rd 2 of either Jonathan Cyprian/ Baccari Rambo/ Blidi Wreh- Wilson/ Da’Rick Rogers/ Brandon Williams. Let’s hope!

1. Ryan Clady
2. Paul Kreuger
3. LaDarius Webb
4. Jarius Byrd
5. Terrance Knighton
6. Phil Taylor
7. Dane Fletcher
8. Delanie Walker
