Brent Celek on Chip Kelly’s Communication System: “it’s going to change the league”

OregonCommunicationSystem1Do you remember how long Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg took to get the plays in from the sidelines to Eagles quarterbacks, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick and Nick Foles?  It took forever and seemed like the Eagles were always dodging delay of game penalties.

If Eagles tight end Brent Celek is to be believed, that’s not going to happen anymore.  According to Celek the communication methods of Chip Kelly will revolutionize the way coaches communicate with their players on the field.

“From a communications standpoint, it’s going to change the league,” Celek said yesterday after practice. “I’m not going to tell you guys how, but it will. Just the way that they can communicate plays in and get us the stuff, it’s pretty cool. It’s something that I never even thought was possible in the NFL. Seeing the stuff he’s doing, he has a reason why he does everything that he does, and a reason why each play is called what it is. And it all makes sense.”

“I can’t say that we’re going to be super successful, but from a communications standpoint, it’s insane. I think it’s awesome.”

We all knew Kelly was up to something when his offense would come to the line of scrimmage in college and look to the sideline.  He would have one of the backup quarterbacks holding huge posters with different things on them.

A NFL source told me that the communication methods which Kelly was going to use would help make things easier for Michael Vick, who struggled under the system which Howard Mudd brought with him from Indianapolis.  Vick had mastered Reid and Juan Castillo’s system, but had to then learned Mudd’s system and he wasn’t able to consistently get the Eagles into the right blitz pickup.

I was told that the Birds would be need only one or two words in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage to call the next play.  Celek says it’s not that simple.

“Yeah, but it’s deeper than that. Like I said, I’m not going to get into it, but there’s a reason why he calls everything the way he calls it,” Celek said. “It’s pretty cool. It’s all thought out to the Nth degree.”

For years I always wondered why offenses didn’t use the no-huddle offense more because the big defensive linemen get tired from pass rushing (rushing the passer takes up more energy than anything else on the defensive side of the ball) and the pass rush stops when they get tired and the quarterback has all day to throw the football.  Think about how many offenses you’ve seen start to move the ball once they get into the no-huddle offense.

“It’s almost like you don’t even have time to think about the last play because you’re on to the next one. It’s just forget about it, forget about it,” Celek said.

We can only hope that the Eagles are eventually doing what Kelly’s Oregon Ducks were doing to opposing defenses by beating them to the lineup of scrimmage while the defense is sucking for air because the offense is running the plays so quickly, while the Birds are putting up 40 and 50 points on a regular basis.

Love the Up-Temp, but do remember that the Ducks didn’t have a QB turning over the Ball as often as Vick Does.. I am afraid with 80-85 Snaps a game on Offense, that will Vick will cough it up 5-6-7 Times meaning the other Team
is putting up 40-50 pts a game against the Eagles Defense..

The signs on the sideline are the thing I’m looking forwrd to most.

Watching Vick get balsted on one of his runs and seeing the ball bounce backward 15 yards is the thing I’m looking forward to least.

So Howard Mudd is the one that caused Mike Vick’s problems?

Hmm, I thought it was Dan Reeves…er…Greg Knapp..er.. Jim Mora… er… Quanis Phillips …er… Purnell Peace… er.. Andy Reid.

Will anything ever be Vick’s fault?

Agree Irish. Vick never mastered Andy and Marty’s system. In 2010, I think Vick became a better passer while defenses continued to play contain against him given that he could still run. When defenses starting sending the house (Minnesota), you saw the real Michael Vick. Teams now continue to tee off on him because he can’t pick up the blitz and can’t run like he used to.

Its actually $3.5 million. With the other half based on completely unmakeable incentives (most notably playing 90% of the snaps and winning the SB)

Vick went from $15 to 3.5 million. I think $3.5 million is about 24th in the NFL for starting QBs base salaries….which makes sense because he was about the 24th rated QB.

not sure if that is true the 3.5 rotoworld words it weird and cant find the true details anywhere:

2/11/2013: Signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract. The deal included a $3.5 million signing bonus. Another $2.5 million is available through incentives based on playing time and playoff appearances. 2013: $3.5 million (+ $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses), 2014: Free Agent

So you can’t be a flyer fan and bitch about the fact that mgmt hasn’t been able to find a goalie over the past 15 years?

You can’t be a Raiders fan and bitch that they threw away 2 drafts for Carson Palmer?

You can’t be a Browns fan and bitch thet they drafted a 28 yr old QB?

You can’t be a Cowboy fan and bitch about having to watch Romo choke for the next 4 years?

According to Mhenski, you can’t be a fan and bitch about a coach’s (and I’m assuming mgmts) decisions.

SO I better not hear any more bitching about Danny Watkins or Nate Allen. Lets all hush about Nnamdi and the trade for Dominic “no one wants me” Cromartie.

And most certainly, you can’t be an Eagles fan and bitch about another year on the same merry-go-round that is “the Mike Vick experience” You just have to sit back and cheer on every 12 step drop and spin into the DE, clap for the turnover you know if coming every half, and say “good try!” 4x a game watching attempted quick slants ricochet off a defender’s facemast because the mini-man can’t see over their shoulder pads.

As long as Eagles’ coaching has decided……

Got it.

Dolphins Front Office talking with Chiefs OT Brandon Albert about a long-term deal if agreed up, then Chiefs will trade Albert to Dolphins for probably their 2nd Round and an additional pick… Dolphins have to replace LT Long who bolted for the Rams and RT Jonathon Martin (last years #1 Pick from Stanford) is a shakly RT at best and no match to play LT…
The only reason I bring this up for it appears to me that Eagles Could probably trade Todd Herremans to Chiefs anf get a 4th Round in Return
Chiefs will Draft LT Joeckel, and then Play Herreman’s at RT.

Oregon may have ran 80+ plays a game…But you have to realize how different the play calling was from what we are accustom to as Eagles fans. Not just the calling of plays, but the design of the plays, routes, blocking, screens….

Oregon vs Arkansas St game last season…Kelly used 2 QB’s…they attempted 39 passes. They carried the ball 4 times each. Oregon ran the ball 49 times, 57 if you count the QB touches.

Oregon vs Tenn Tech – Oregon attempted a total of 33 passes. Oregon ran the ball a total of 36 times (removing the QB scrambling or called rushes)

Oregon vs Arizona – Oregon attempted a total of 36 passes. Oregon ran the ball a total of 45 times (removing the QB scrambling or called rushes)

Oregon vs Kansas St – Oregon attempted a total of 24 passes. Ran the ball a total of 37 times. (removing the QB scrambling or called rushes)

Oregon vs Oregon St ran the ball a total of 64 times passed 24

Point of the above statistics is to show that the run game will be a bigger part of the Eagles game than years past….Kelly will run the ball. This will be big for Vick especially with the weapon the Eagles have at RB.

Things are going to be different, coaches, different system, different pass protection…Jason Peters returning to the O Line, a different O Line coach, different play calling…All of those things considered could impact Vick’s performance positively…I’m looking forward to see Vick play on a team that will use him in accordance with what he does best, what the team does best.

@RealTalk,

Oregon vs Arkansas State – The score was 50-10 at halftime and the whole first team sat out the second half. Of course they ran the ball 57 times.

Oregon vs Tenn Tech – Marcus Mariota threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns before the starters were pulled. Final score 63-14…. jeezz did you expect them to keep passing?

Oregon vs Arizona – Oregon was winning 43-7 at halftime. Even the QB caught a TD pass… I guess they had to run the ball or they would have scored 100 points….

Oregon vs Kansas St – De’Anthony Thomas ran back the opening kickoff, Mariota threw for 2 TD, and the ducks lead the whole game… No need to pass the ball…

Point of the above statistics – Kelly won’t be running over NFL teams like he did in college. The Eagles will have to pass the ball because they wont be winning by 30 at halftime every game.

Vick will still have to play NFL style QB.

@Irish

Give it a rest…I took the time to research the scores/stats, obviously I know the point spreads…The Eagles had leads in 2012 and did not run the ball. Oregon won a lot of games by a lot of points no doubt. But the running game was a major part of the game…

Oregon vs Arkansas State core was 50 -10 at halftime…yes it was..But what was the first play call of the game? A handoff….when’s the last time you saw that from the Eagles teams of the past? If you want to really be critical…Oregon called 14 pass plays and 11 runs, in the 1st quarter of the blowout….

Yes the score could result in more rushes…but before the game got out of hand it was still a very good mix of pass/run.

Vs Arizona – the first drive….Oregon called 3 run plays and 1 pass play. 2nd possession they called running plays….First two possessions they attempt 1 pass….

Oregon vs Tenn Tech – 10 pass plays, 6 rushes in the 1st quarter…another nice mix of run and pass…

Oregon vs Kansas State – 1st possession 2 called passes…(2 QB carries, possibly scrambles or play call) 4 rushes total. Total for 1st half 12 pass plays, 13 rushes…(3 rushes by the QB in the 1st half, possibly called or scrambles)

Also you don’t mention that many of the pass plays were short passes, WR screens, quick passes, screens, basically could be rushes, considering how close to the line of scrimmage the ball was being received…

Before trying to correct me…due your homework and get all the facts….The running game will be utilized.

The fact is that the Eagles will not be up 30-40 points in the second half of many games like Oregon. It’s ridiculous to think that the pass/run ratio in Philly will be the same as it was in Oregon. Oregon averaged 53 runs and 29 passes per game last year. That will never happen in the NFL.

Yeah, no shit Kelly will run the ball more than Andy Reid. It would be hard to run less. But he won’t run nearly 70% of the time like he did in Oregon. And the Eagles will need a different type quarterback than Oregon did, which is the point of this post. Michael Vick will not be running the Ducks offense. He will still need NFL quarterback skills,, which he does not possess.

When did I say the pass/run ratio would be the same in the NFL? Never! I simply stated that more of a running game would benefit Vick. Lets be real, the problem you have with my comment, is that I am being optimistic in regards to Vick, in a new system, philosophy, new coaches etc….if I said what I said earlier and replaced Vick’s name with Foles…I bet you wouldn’t of even commented.

That’s partially true… But the real problem I have with your comment is that you seem to by implying that Vick will be in a system that doesn’t require him to have great NFL quarterback skills. And for that reason you think Vick will be successful.

If a NFL team could hang 50+ points on the board every week, and only throw the ball 35% of of the time, like the Oregon stats you posted, then Vick, or Dennis Dixon, or anybody could be our starter – I agree with that.

And my point is that the Eagles will not run 81 offensive plays a game (like Oregon), they ran 64 offensive plays a game last year. The Eagles won’t be leading in every game, and they won’t have a 35/65 pass/run ratio (like Oregon). So the stats you posted are irrelevant.

I agree that the Eagles will run the ball more, but nothing like the Ducks. I think the Eagles will get more first downs and run more offensive plays next year, but nothing like the Ducks. AND – I don’t think running the ball more will cover-up Vick’s shortcomings as a quarterback or as a ball carrier.

As far as Foles goes – Nothing about the Oregon system benefits him.

First off, you stated that the reason why Oregon had so many more runs than passes was because of the score of the game…you implied that they only ran the ball because of the score…that is partially true…running numbers were inflated greatly because of the final score…

But as I also pointed out Oregon ran the ball early and often, even in those games that were eventual blowouts. Playing Vick to a skill set that benefits him means this. More movement of the pocket, get Vick on the move….this is where he is best, when you speak about “QB skills”…thats a skill that some QB’s don’t have! Also mixing from run to pass, not allowing the defense to pin their ears back and get after him on every down. There are so many “new” things in 2013 that could positively impact Vick’s performance, starting with the coaching staff, JP returning to O Line, luck and etc…

You believe what you want to believe…and I’ll continue to support and believe that Vick will have a solid 2013 season based on what I expect to see from the Philly offense

can we stop with the Vick trolling he is not the best QB not the worst. I hate turnovers like the next man but I’m not going to ignore that a lot weren’t his fault and neither was how bad the team was. I liked the way Foles played and I think he can be a really good QB if given the chance, but that doesn’t make me look at Vick in a different light. people up here act as if he didn’t win games before philly like he wasn’t the first player to walk in Lambo and win a playoff game against Bret Favorite. How do you get as much attention and a second chance like Vick has being a Bum? obviously professional coaches staff front office people value his game when they watch it as well as the players. Shit crumbs up her really have no clue and want make people talking about his ego and what it can and cannot handle, yet he shared time with Dmac coming off prison or not all players want to play. When I watched the Birds last two year it didn’t matter if it was Vick or another player T.O. happened sometimes for no reason at all. sure handed players would turn it over at the worst time (see Avant and Maclin) the turnovers didn’t stop when Foles took over either. so let’s shut the fuck up and accept he is on the roster like you accept that Kelly is the coach. last I checked Andy’s run was ending before Vick got here and gave him two more years on life support that Andy fucked up again anyway ignoring giant holes in the roster and over analyzing, making knee jerk reactions and desperation decisions as well as overvaluing talent.

Hell Vick has done much more degrading things than that and Lurie didn’t seem to mind.

Schedule is out. 9 wins will be good enough to win this division. If you think Eagles schedule is tough just look at the rest of the division. I see 7 wins at best for this Eagles team right now

What do you think about Rutgers OLB Khaseem Greene..
He’s got a 3rd to 4th Rd Round Grade and is 6-1′ – 241lbs.. maybe a Special Team and Back-up Potential to start out.. read some pretty good yhings and some things about his deficiencies .. What’s your thought’s

I think he is a special teams contributor for a couple of years with the potential to compete for a starting position afterward if he works hard enough. He is a tweener OLB/SS, so I wouldn’t draft him higher than 4th Round. I like Sio Moore OLB, from Connecticut, a lot better who I believe could be an All-Pro SS. Fast, hard hitting, instinctive, and can cover.

These 240-250lbs LB’s are not going to make the transition to an NFL Safety, they are not quick enough or as I say sometimes, not enough good hip action, to play the Safety Position at the NFL Level.. but that’s just me.. I do like SIo Moore and think he has potential to be a Good NFL OLB in 2 Years time

I say screw hip action, he is a baller. Sio Moore ran a 4.56 at the combine, that is plenty quick enough…I say he could be a All Pro- Strong Safety. he is 235lbs, and is athletic enough to play the position at a high level.

As an OLB, he would have to gain weight, which would result in loss of speed…..SS, IS HIS POSITION

They had him playing SS at the Senior Bowl, and he was knocking the snot bubbles out of the top TE’s, RB’s, and WR’s in the draft, and had an interception…….I disagree Paul….

I rip everyone, when warranted. I’m sick of hearing about the bum, sick of the constant, back & forth with his deluded worshippers, like you. Again, if you were a fan of the Birds, you would care about the future, & betterment of this team, in which Vick is not part of, & has failed to do, over & over again! As for my racial make-up, by you saying “go fuck yourself” shows YOUR ignorance, classlessness, bigotry & racism. So you go F^#@ YOURSELF, scumbag! I can take as much as you can give septic swimmer! You are the 1 bringing up, bogus accusations, of racism, & hateful obsession, not me. If a QB sucks, he sucks! I’ve reprimanded posters, on bot sides of the issue! Again, I will say that the QBs are so “great” on this team, that they are looking to draft one. Why do we keep arguing about them? Some people don’t like Vick and some don’t like Foles and no one knows what to think about Dixon. That tells me that we are a long way from settled at this spot and will probably have a different starter next season.

This Vick talk has me sick to my stomach..
In 4Seasons with Eagles, he’s Failed to win a Playoff Game and failed the last Seasons to even have a wiing team, I have seen enough of him and wanted the Franchise to completely move forward this Season
With a new Coaching Staff (which they have) and a new leader at QB
And Not the same old crap.. (Vick) .. Opportunity Lost z

gm, if that is who they pick with their 1st 3 picks, that will set back the team 2-3 years. I have no problem with Cyprian, but he was a 3rd-4th rounder before the BS Senior bowl hype, & we DO NOT have the luxury, to draft a reach in Jordan, at #4. Warford isn’t going to last until the 3rd, & even if he does & we do draft him, what are we doing for the entire right side of the line & with Mathis? No way Watkins starts at RG & no way is Herremans is a RT! You trading Mathis?

DCar you know that my choice is to trade down, and draft Ziggy Ansah. I usually mock my choice with potential trades. Without trades I think politics will rear it’s head. So, thats why you see Dion Jordan.

I think Cyprian is more of a Brian Dawkins clone than some think Matt Eam is, plus, Cyprian is better in coverage, and a better athlete than Swearinger.

Warford, I project to the 2nd Round as well but, some mocks have him forcasted as a 3rd Rounder. That was just to counter Jakes weak mock. this is what I want:

1a, Ezekiel Ansah
1b. Sheldon Richardson

2a. Jonathan Cyprian
2b. Larry Warford
2c. Jamie Collins

3a. Quinton Patton
3b. Cornelius Washington
3c. Brandon Williams
3d. Blidi Wreh Wilson

4a. Matt Scott
4b. Montori Hughes
4c. Da’Rick Rogers
4d. Brian Schwenke

5a. Alvin Bailey
5b. Michael Williams

McFadden 5-10″ 195lbs, solid, physical, fast, and excels in man-to-man coverage Great leaping and ball hawk skills.. Many Scouts and myself are rally high on him.. He has that swagger and physicality that you like to see at the CB Spot.. I see him as Nickel back/Special Teamer in 2013

Some NFL News
Jets have reached a Deal with TB Bucs sending CB Revis for their 1st Round
Picks and future Picks lending a Physical which Revis is scheduled to take Monday with Tampa Medical Staff
This makes my big trade proposal with the Jets a moot issue

The other news Ild that QB Geno Smith & CB Dee Milliner continue to slide down the Big Board making it very unlikely any Teams want to Trade up with the Eagles at #4 fimr euther if these Olayers
It appears that the 3 OT’s (Joeckel, Fisher and Lane Johnson) are the most coveted Players in this Draft.
I have Joeckel & Fisher going 1 & 2 in the Draft to the Chiefs and Jaguars
With the Raiders selecting DT Shariff Floyd, out of sheer necessity, since they lost DT’s from their Roster in Free-Agency/Salary Cap moves
Leaving the Eagles at #4 with the last top OT on the board in Lane Johnson who is coveted by the Chargers,Panthers and Dolphins big time since theseTeams are struggling for an OT.. Should be interesting as the Eagles should get some offers for Him…

These 3 OT’s will sign Deals shortly after the Draft
Most likely landing Spots/Teams that will sign them
Chargers, Jets, Panthers & Lions

It appears the Chiefs will Trade OT Brandon Albert to Miami Dolphins for a 2Nd Rounder and Draft OT Joeckel with 1st Pick and get their 2Nd Round Pick from Dolphins for Albert to replace the Pick that went to the 49ers for QB Alex Smith.. Chiefs have had an excellent Off-Season and Coch AR has a great Staff, if Alex Smith plays well, watch out for them in 2013..

I want:
OT 1st
CB 2nd
OG 3rd
C 4th
but best available takes precedence. I want points and lots of them this season. A backup TE in James Casey addition combined with 17 points a game last year still is a vote of no confidence. I liked Howie and was in his corner up until the Billy Davis hire — the 2012 draft ( Cox, Kendricks, Curry drafted for 4-3 by GM) and switch to 3-4 bothers me.

I think a big DE is needed by the 2nd/3rd Round to anchor the 3-4
DE Position.. I believe Cole, Curry and possibly Graham will all be gone by 2014 since they are not a natural fit for this scheme..
I expect Cole to be Traded or released,
Gragam will get this season at OLB and Curry this Season at DE since they are still young, relatively cheap and really not much to lose to see if they adjust
to the new schemes, but Tent Cole is a goner..
On OL, I believe they give Watkins a final chance,
But if it’s apparent that he struggles with new schemes and OL Coach, then he’s a goner, if Watkins looks good and takes to new schemes, than
Todd Herremans is the odd-man, Player out..

One thing for sure about the TB Bucs acquiring CB Revis
To go along with Safety Goldston, 2nd Year Safety Mark Barron
And CB Eric Wright is that they have addressed their weak spot
Of a poor Secondary in recent Years.. They have 3-4 First Round Picks along their DL and if they get some LB Play, they could be a pretty good Defense
And a Playoff Contendors even in the High-Scoring NFC South with Falcons, Saints and Oanthers Offenses & QB’s..
QB Josh Freeman is in Contract Year and has big incentive $$$ wise to have his best season.. TB Bucs have a lot of Talent
