Steve Spagnuolo – Will He Return To The Eagles?

Does Steve Spagnuolo really want to return to Philadelphia? There are various vacant head coaching positions out there, and various defensive coordinator vacancies as well. Spagnuolo will always have a Super Bowl championship on his resume as the defensive coordinator of the 2007-2008 New York Giants that upset the perfect New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. Will he try to ride that reputation to another head coaching job? Will he wait another year?

There is plenty of speculation going around that if Spagnuolo decides to return to the Eagles, he would become the fourth defensive coordinator in three years for the team, and also possibly become the assistant head coach. Should Andy Reid fail next season to win a Super Bowl, he could finally be fired and Spags could take the reigns should the season play out that way. Among the teams that could bid for Spagnuolo’s services are the Falcons, Dolphins, Colts, Chiefs, Raiders, Jaguars, and even the Rams. OK, I guess we could count the Rams out. Today, the Vikings have come out as potential suitors for Steve Spagnuolo as well, a move that would reunite Spags with Leslie Frazier. Both were coaches in Philadelphia under Andy Reid.

It’s unclear where Spags’s loyalty lies right now. He will definitely have a job next season. He’s as well-respected a coach as I can remember in the NFL. I’m not convinced that he thinks Philly is the best fit for him, but among the teams listed above, they certainly are the most stacked.

Among all of those teams, the Eagles have the absolute best talent on the defensive side of the ball. Spags had nothing to work with in St. Louis from the moment he got there, and he almost won a division title with his abomination of a team last year. With playmakers such as Nnamdi Asomugha, DRC, Jason Babin, Trent Cole, and a plethora of young linebackers that I’m sure can improve under Spagnuolo’s direction, the Eagles seem to be in good position to make a run for his services. But will they?

Hiring Steve Spagnuolo would be admitting a mistake for the second year in a row, and we all know how much the Eagles try to paint a pretty picture from all of their decisions over the years. They’re never wrong. This makes me think they’ll keep Juan Castillo as DC and have Spags go elsewhere. Is that what I want to happen? Not in the least. Do I think it can happen? Absolutely.

I think he comes back if we scrap the wide 9.

Give Spag draft control and let him bring in his own people.

I don’t see Spags coming back to Philly as long as DL Washburn is here..
I actually see Spags going to Indy to become their DC and build a Defense in his likeness joining new GM Grigson and soon to be HC Marty Mohrnewig and OC Doug Pederson as the Colts rebuild their Franchise

Washburn will not coach or teach another Technique other than the Wide-9,
it’s who he is… As long as he’s in Philly, no Spags.. You can book it…

paulman says it, so it has to be true.

part of me agrees, part of me does not. I don’t think personally that castillo will be fired, I believe that they may bring spags in, but not for DC, at least not right away. People will talk all sorts of crap about castillo, and how he sucks, blah blah. The man was given a job that he wanted, but wasnt truly qualified for, had new players, a new d-line coach, and had no offseason to learn it, I dont think that he should be fired right away.

I think spags may end up here, but not as a DC. maybe he initially accepts a smaller role, on a 1-2 year deal… if the defense plays anything like it did in the first half of this year, he will then take control.

They cant fire castillo from the team, he is a great coach… which is why I think he may earn another chance, with spags around in some aspect.

Its a front. It can be tweaked and used in conjuction with any d. Its a defensive front. How do you know Spags cant employ it in his new system? We led the league in sacks? Why would Spags not want to do that? They played a straight 4 man front several times during games.

Spags comes in within a week.

Paul, you throw crap at the wall and hope it sticks. Your sources are a janitor you talk sports with in your office.

The funny thing Erock, is that my crap is usually right…
Anyone thinks that Spags , out of loyalty to Philly is going to return in a lessor role than a full-fledged D/C is fooling themselves.. Spags was just let go of being the #1 Coacj of one of NFL Teams.. He will not accept anything less a DC with fulll authority which he would have in Minnesota,Indianapolis,Atlanta but won’t have in Philly with Washburn/Castillo around…
If Castillo was going to get fired, it would have already happened, Coach AR would not string along one of his long time assistants.. If AR thghout he had to go and succumbed to all the pressure from the media and dans, he would have let go already so that Castillo could possibly hook up with another team.. Look at the teams that have already added O/L Coaches (Cowboys & Jets) Does anyone pay attention on the way AR goes about his post-season routine and business, He always goes away on Vacation to get out of PHilly , but is really spending much of time burning up the Phone lines and working on his Coaching Staff CHanges and game plan moving forward..

Paul, by ‘usually’ do you mean ‘once in a blue moon’?

Paul, you’re pigeon holing Spags. He’s a person. A person who’s worked on different football teams with different schemes. When he won in NY, it was his DL that got most of the pressure right? I don’t remember the giants blitzing, I remember that D being successful with the front 4 getting pressure. Um, that’s the point of the wide 9.

Spags isn’t a one trick pony, only some people and the media and Paul said so. Both the media and Paul are wrong about 50 percent of the time, that’s chance, that means they’re unreliable.

Essentially, Paul, as usual, you have an opinion, and that’s fine, but your opinion is based off of weak, follow every assumption, take chances without putting much critical thought into anything, —- and STILL, you treat your opinion as if it is fact.

Paul, I too think that Castillo stays. But your logic “If Castillo was going to get fired, it would have already happened”… is worthless. Because of what deadline? Yeah, there’s been a couple of coaching moves already, but there are plenty of vacancies (and actually a speculative story about Castillo going to join Frasier in Minnesota)… and it’s still the middle of the playoffs.

Winners – same as Erock – which means 3 of the worst 4 Ds (with 3 of the best QBs in the NFL) will be in the last 4 standing……..

also I’d like to add to this, saying “castillo would of been fired by now” is dumb… for starters AR waited until he knew mcdermott found another job before letting him go, and IF castillo (even though I dont think he will) got fired, he would do the same.
