Eagles WR Riley Cooper Uses N-word In Video

EAGLES ACTIONEagles wide receiver Riley Cooper made the mistake of using the N-word and somebody was taping him with their smart phone.  Cooper was at the Kenny Chesney concert at Lincoln Financial Field with teammate Jason Kelce and a number of friends.  It seems like he was in some type of altercation before the video occurred.

Cooper who seemed to be agitated after the altercation, points toward the camera and says“I will jump that fence and fight every nig… in here, bro.”

The video has been made public and since then Cooper has Tweeted an apology for using that word.

“I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself. I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, Jeffrey Lurie, and Howie roseman and to my teammates. I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences.”

Cooper is currently starting for the Birds at one of their wide receiver positions after Jeremy Maclin suffered an ACL tear in his right knee.

What? that is knee jerk over reaction. There is only one side of the story out there. We don’t know what caused him (besides the alcohol) to react like this. What did the security guard (who is paid to keep the peace and de-escalate drunks) say? I don’t know and neither does anyone else.
I just think this pc society we’ve created is a bit ridiculous people make mistakes. Goodell will suspend him– i predict several AA team mates step forward very soon in support.

As much as it may seem like an over reaction to cut him, you need to understand that these types of actions are not tolerated in today’s society and Riley Cooper should face a serious punishment. Being a white male, I feel like saying the “N-word” in a demeaning manor is disgusting especially since he is surrounded by black people every day. That word shouldn’t even be in his vocabulary. Say what you want about black people using that term loosely and Riley probably hears it 50 times a day, I still believe that this type of conduct and the attention it brings to the organization means drastic measures need to be taken.

You clowns are hypocrites to the worst degree every, one of you slings that word, especially the brothers, we weren’t around when that word had the worst racial content, but in today’s speak it describes a person of any race he wasn’t referencing brothers, but white people, stupid for him to say given his public figure status, but all these Lilly white people now condemning him, give me a fucking break

Riley, hold your ground, screw these politically correct people, just say I said it, I should not have said it, I am sorry, and move on

You know I have never been a Vick fan but let me say this. Vick has more than paid his debt to society for his crime. He lost his freedom, and plenty of money for what he did. It’s amazing to me why people still bring up his crimes like he didn’t suffer for it. Now what Riley said he said, he may still be cut we shall see. He wants to be a tough guy okay well every week he can explain why he said what he said to the likes of Ed reed, Patrick Willis etc, etc. Dude good look LOL tough guy.

Riley and Vick should both be cut, not because of this, but because they both suck.

That being said, white people need to realize they can’t be saying that word. It might not be fair when you hear black people saying it, or that someone like myself ( asian) can probably get away with saying it. But you have to understand that your people were oppressive many years ago and now you have to pay the price for that.

Its like how we men have to pay the price for all the women that got abused by men 100 years ago and now we have to deal with BS like feminism.

Men oppressed women. Didn’t allow them to vote, couldn’t get jobs. White people had slaves.

Both are forms of impression. Slavery worse IMO, but thats not the point.

Point is, that doesnt really exist nowadays, but we all have to pay the price. Just deal with it and take adv of it. For example, women are more liberated now. That means they’ll go out more and look for sex more. That means we get laid more by taking adv of it.

Both Mui and Jakedog make good points. No doubt he was out of line. Racism is more in the intent than the word. Cooper has a rough way to go convincing people who don’t know him he is not a full blown racist. A southern accent a Kenny Chestny concert and cut off flannel shirt and a racist slur goes together like peanut butter and jelly in the perception world. People are complex and he prob grew up around racist had racist friends. His parent prob taught him better and in life he has been better off for it. That doesn’t mean when pressed some of the old town ways don’t surface. Similar too a black man from the hood who has done better knows better but if the right person pushes the right buttons you can find out easily that its another side. As men as long as the truth is told and adressed it’s easy to move on. A real racist would not be able to play in the NFL hug get dressed laugh cry with black players. The burden of carrying racism would consume them. Riley Cooper was an idiot that prob been around too many black people to let that word roll off his tounge like that. He is not the first white guy to get way too comfortable and won’t be the last but I don’t think he is a outright racist.

You let Cary Williams, Peters, McCoy and big mouth Desean Jackson get away with plenty this off season. Its time you showed these guys that you wont tolerate this BS. Bill Belichick would not tolerate this mess.

If you want to give this franchise a new culture then Chip needs to take action now. Its not like you are cutting Tom Brady or Calvin Johnson. Riley Cooper isnt even a top 200 player in the NFL. He SUCKS he’s a scrub and he goes to kenny chesney concerts. CUT HIM!!!

your absolutely right. the Qb of the team embodies more than just who can run the offense. the team looks to Vick to answer the tough questions or to stand up and speak to the team. Your play is a huge part of it but if things are close that factor will give Vick another edge. Foles is a gamer tho you can’t count him out, but it looks as Vick is the starter/leader in every aspect. Personally Vick has matured way past who he was years ago and still learning while going through this “competition” but it is making him step up in other areas that he was lacking before. Physically there is no question who is better now you can see signs of believable leadership, not just rah rah lip service. Where is Vinnythevillian? lol

I would have to agree, tsjohnson5. If there is one thing that became very clear during this disturbing situation, is that Vick is clearly a leader in that locker room. I read his comments and they were the comments of a man who has the respect of the players and one who is interested in protecting the team. I would have to believe that Kelly will take this into account when he evaluates all of the on-field play. Not to say that Foles cannot become a leader, but Vick has proved it in the past and again here during a mess of a situation. He could of easily said “no comment” and let the media keep stirring this volitile controversy. He even had to chastise his brother for a heated tweet. I am not always of fan of what Vick has done on the field over the past few years, but there is no question that he has strong leadership skills and he has a strong presence in the locker room….now if he can only stay healthy and cut down on turnovers we could have a QB for Kelly’s Eagles.

Story:

Its the NFC champ game against TB. I’m in the first row at the 20 yard line or so. TB side of the field. Ja Rule was halftime entertainment (important).

Anyway – we all know how that game went. Depressing. So I’m pissed off….and who comes strolling out onto the TB side of the field but Mr Rule. All hobnobbing with the TB players…high fiving, having a grand old time.

I said to my friends, what a joke…Birds winning and that charlettan would be on the Eagles sideline.

This is wear I will mention he was wearing a full length fur coat.

No. Seriously. A fur coat.

What kind of man wears a fur coat?

So anyway, he, and his entourage (several also wearing fur coats) are within earshot and I perhaps mention something about what kind of men wear fur coats.

He did not like this and quickly told me to suck his cock.

I told him I would, but felt he might enjoy it just a bit too much. (I thought that was pretty funny – he did not)

So anyway, suddenly there are 5 or 6 of his entourage heading toward me and I have never, ever, ever heard the kind of racial comments spewing from these guys mouths. I couldn’t believe the hate.

Now this followed another incident the previous night (completely unrelated) hen I ended up at the south street diner with my buddy aat 2:00am or so.

We’re in a booth that can hold 4.

2 very attractive girls get sat at a tiny table beside us. We can hear them complaining about how its a shitty table it is….my buddy is single, besides, I out of the country, so we think this is a golden opportunity. I invite them over.

Hesitation.

Hesitation

“We can’t”
“Whaddya mean, common…we haven’t ordered yet..”
“I don’t think so….we shouldn’t”

So I’m cracking jokes – trying to break the ice…but it was difficult….they didn’t want to.

But because I am so charming, and devastatingly good looking, they came over.

Then I hear from the booth behind me, “fucking nigger lovers”

Well, isn’t that fantastic..

America…..you have to get your shit together over this race business.

Suggesting that all blacks use the word is both untrue and disingenuous. If some of you weren’t always trying try to play the race card your selves or feign some pathetic white oppression, we’d all be the better for it. Though some blacks use the word, many to most still don’t. And I can assure you that it has often lead to heated discussions of how inappropriate the word is. That being said I think it’s wrong to assume Cooper is a racist just because he used the word. I also don’t believe that using offensive words should just arbitrarily make one unworthy to work in his trade. He apologized for using it. His teammates apparently forgive him. move on.

Personally there are far more serious problems along racial lines that plague this society than a stupid slur from a non descript football player. People in power racial profiling blacks and other minorities; same power brokers crafting laws to disenfranchise across socio, economic, and political levels, etc…etc.. way more worthy of attention and scrutiny.

Ironically the guy who can’t seem to fart without some jack-ass complaining, Mike Vick, responded the best when asked about Cooper’s comments.

I could care less if he likes blacks, thinks they are the n-word or whatever. Just catch the f-ing ball and bring me a Lombardi.

People profit through both power and wealth. Im not naive and know there are many issues plaging race relations. I also know a lot of people are profiting from the strife, hate, and drama all this brings. Grandstanding for profit, The players for one from Avant to Vick have taken the high road because they are the ones that matter here. God Bless you all and let’s try to work through the maddness.

I find this quite humorous…The N word has become universal. I hear white, asian, indian kids referring to one another as N’s…doesn’t necessarily always equal negativity. But it does make me believe that while many won’t openly come out and say the word, many are thinking it!
Like those of you on this site, defending Cooper, or saying blacks use the word all the time…or saying what about the words “cracker” “whitey” etc….Instead of saying, Cooper is wrong for what he said…You cats are simply trying to put up smoke screens and in my opinion really shows your true colors.

Fact, we aren’t talking about a black athlete at this moment referring to whites in a derogatory manner…We are talking about a white athlete who actually used the word in public. I don’t know Cooper, I don’t know if he is racist or not…Being he plays football where the profession is heavy with the minority, I don’t believe he is.

Vinnie, you bring up a story where you were called names…one example…Vinnie I can give you numerous examples where I’ve been discriminated against, followed in a store, pulled over, searched (called a N to my face one time) Right in PA actually……..all because of the color of my skin. I understand that has happened to you. I completely believe it.

I was at an Eagles’ game when McNabb threw a pick and the guy behind me said, we’ll never win with a _________ quarterback.

You may, or many not believe me when I say that was the first time I had ever heard the word used in public.

But, you also missed the point of my story. It wasn’t about how I was called a couple of names….its how the issue of race permeates and defines your country.

It was about how no matter what the situation – talking to a couple of girls, bugging a guy about his clothing choices, arguing about a terrible quarterback – no matter what it is, you guys (white and black) always seem to come back to race.

Always.

Every time.

Its crazy man.

For god’s sake, some of you would question the motives of a kid
trying to decide between chocolate or vanilla at a baskin robbins.

And yes, I’m talking to Riley Cooper. I have no idea why, when pissed off (clearly), that’s the word that pops into his head first.

In this country, its a melting pot for different races, religions and ethnicities. Racism is something that is very real and not going anywhere anytime soon. Its not only here, but everywhere. In Ireland they hate the English because Northern Ireland is still being occupied by the Brits. The Palestinians hate the Israelis because of a 13 mile long peace of land. They have been fighting a holy war for 3000 years! We all make some generalizations about races and ethnicities, some with mallice and some lighthearted. White people can’t dance, Italians love Cadillacs and hair gel, black people love bling and rims.. It may be a little small minded but its something all of us do.

Good stuff Real. Really good insight. This is probably one of the better discussions that we have had on this site on race.

Can I ask you Real if you were a member of the Eagles and had played with Cooper for the past couple of years, what would your reaction be to the whole incident?

That’s tough Bugs…I don’t know Cooper personally…But assuming if I were his teammate and he and I have a teammate relationship (brotherhood) Then the way in which Cooper used the word, would of shocked me. The way he used it wasn’t in the manner in which it is used in “slang” terms (without the ‘er’, you clearly hear the ‘er’)But being a teammate for the last few years I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. As long as I didn’t have a reason or some sort of vibe throughout the years of being his teammate, it would be water under the bridge. Fletcher Cox straight southern boy who probably knows a lot about discrimination forgave him…If he can I see a lot of his teammates doing the same. But him saying it won’t be forgotten by his teammates best believe that..

Thanks for the reply man. I am wondering if there was any vibe before this at all. I am thinking no as guys seem to be forgiving him.

Doesn’t mean someone won’t lay him out at some point in the future.

Everyone who has an opinion on this subject should read the article today on fox sports.com by Jason Whitlock. He does a lot of peaces that do a very good job on offering perspective when it comes to race. He is a black guy that is often called a racist. That’s not my opinion of him, but itsIwidely accepted, he was fired from ESPN for racist comments against Jeremy Lin.
