Zach Ertz Shining And Bryce Brown Struggling At Eagles-Pats Practice

The Birds had another spirited practice against the New England Patriots yesterday.

First of all Tom Brady shows every day why he is headed to the Hall of Fame.  First his command of the game at the line of scrimmage and in the pocket, then his accuracy and ability to put the ball where only his receiver can get it.  He was working his magic on the Eagles defense for most of the workout, but I’ll give the Birds credit for competing.

The Eagles need to stop throwing the ball to running back Bryce Brown.  He can’t catch and that’s going to open the door for Chris Polk to get opportunities to be the back up to LeSean McCoy.  He will be definitely the guy asked to catch the football out of the backfield behind McCoy.

I don’t know how Brown is going to be able to maintain his backup running back position behind McCoy when the guy can’t catch a cold if he was butt naked in the South or North Pole.  He has dropped more balls than just about any running back I have ever seen at a training camp.

I thought rookie tight end Zach Ertz looks great especially in the red zone.  He always seems to be open and the big guy comes down with the football.  Ertz has a great feel for the game and he runs his routes very smoothly.  He approaches his cuts without giving the defenders any inclination that he’s getting ready to change his direction.

He’s one of their top weapons in the red zone.  They’re going to split him out down there and get him matched up on a linebacker, who probably won’t be quick enough to defend him. or a defensive back, who probably won’t be big enough to muscle him.

Finally, they be able to dictate somethings to the defense with Ertz on board and Jason Peters back in the lineup.  Peters will allow to run on the left-side of their offensive line against anybody.

Wide receiver Ifeanyi Momah is starting to show some improvement, but he’s still got a long way to go.  He has definitely shown everybody that he is worth investing some time and money in because he’s got tremendous potential.

I like the way Nate Allen competed yesterday in the one-on-one drills.  Yes he was beaten a few times in the one-on-ones, but that’s an offensive drills because you get no help from any of defenders and you have no pass rush on the quarterback.  He was jumping in there and competing whereas it didn’t seem like a lot of the other defensive backs were as eager to get those reps against Tom Brady and the Pats receivers.

Guys like cornerback Cary Williams are always coming up with this injury or that injury.   You get better by practicing not missing practice.

In the one-on-0ne pass rush battle, first round right tackle Lane Johnson didn’t move his feet and got caught lunging forward on his first rep.  He was beaten outside by outside linebacker Rob Ninkovich.

I do like the fact that on the second time around, Johnson knew he wasn’t going to get bullrushed by the smaller Ninkovich, so he was ready t move laterally.  He easily stoned Ninkovich on the second battle.

Guard Danny Watkins is doing a good job of standing up strong against the bull rush.   The improvement of Watkins will mean that the Birds have good depth at the guard position, which could come in handy with the long season.

Offensive tackle Allen Barbre has also had a very good camp.  H’e’s getting better every day with his fundamentals.  Like Watkins he’s going to give the Eagles depth on their offensive line.  The strongest area on the football team is the offensive line and it’s a good thing that Chip Kelly believes in the running game.

Good Stuff G-Man..
A couple of Players I am concerned about so far this Camp

1) RB Bryce Brown.. Does he do the little things and show the energy/passion that Kelly is going to want to see as well as blocking, securing the ball..
2) CB Cary Williams has gotten off to a terrbile start with the Eagles in my opinion, from missing OTA’s due to not being mandatory and family conflicts to missing a lot of Practice time thus far.. He appears that he’s a “”‘ll do it on my own kind of player” which is not the type of Player I want on my Team
3) Safety Kenny Phillips – continual Knee Issues & Swelling has limited his Practice Reps.. a Very Good Safety when Healthy, I just don’t see him ever being 100% Healthy over a long Season any longer and could end up being Released which would not surprise my one bit..
4) Center Jason Kelce – coming back after Knee Surgery and maybe pushing it too fast.. part of it could be that new Center Matt Tennant has been playing and showing himself well thus far in camp that Kelce is rushing his return
5) RB – Felix Jones – Needs to step it up or fall further beind Polk as the 3rd String RB .. The Former Cowboy has Talent, but does he have the work ethic and desire that it takes to compete at the NFL Level.. Polk appears highly motivated and could be a great short/red-zone back to mix things up versus the shifty McCoy and to help take some punishment and wear & tear away from McCoy…

p man ,I have my doubts of kelce as an NFL starting center, he only started cause Mudd liked him ( Mudds outta here and he stunk in my opinion ) Kelce couldn’t make the o-line calls 2 yrs , and he got hurt early last yr. He’s very unproven. He can’t get any movement on a DT in short yardage by himself. yeah-yeah they say he gets out to the second level… doesn’t matter if you can’t handle the MAN IN FRONT OF YOU. I’ve seen NT Jay Ratliff push him around… HE AIN’T BIG ENOUGH.

Kelce is the real deal..he just got to get healthy…because he got pushed around by Jay Ratliff on a few plays is nothing to dismiss him for…Jay Ratliff is a beast when he is healthy. Kelce is good I have seen him push some d-tackles around too!

YOU EAGLES WRITERS NEED TO SERIOUSLY GET OFF BRADY’S DICK AND QUIT COMPARING HIM TO OUR QBS. He’s been with the same team and coach for 13 F”ING YEARS.

Vick/Nick are LEARNING AN ENTIRELY NEW SYSTEM! MY GOD IN HEAVEN I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER TEAMS MEDIA SLOB SO HARD OVER ANOTHER TEAMS QB. JESUS.

STOP IT,NOT COOL. Especially a team that probably cheated to beat us in the superbowl. However ,this team aint winning nothing with this horrid defensive coordinator. DUMBEST MOVE EVER WAS TO LET DRC GO. He’s 10x better than any DB we have now. I have absolutely no faith in the DC we have now by seeing he has done absolutely nothing worthy of praise. We may as well just kept Castillo.

Why does this team continue to do idiotic things. What is so f’ing hard about going out and getting a good DC? Lurie should know better than just hiring some random guy that has done nothing. Also Vick is CLEARLY better than Foles. He needs all the reps, stop wasting time on Foles. He nothing more than a career back up at best like Kolb. WAIT til the pads come on and the game starts. These white folks just want a white qb so they blame Vick for everything. When both qbs had a losing records last season. Some hate Vick for dogs, but dismiss what Riley cooper did. Ive even heard some of these people support Zimmerman for killing a young black kid,but hate Vick(a human being) over killing a dog, yes A dog.

Thanks for letting your bias show through in lumping everyone together like that. Now I know to completely ignore your comments. Some of us white folks think Vick should start.

Hey godgotvick,

I was with you until paragraph 4 sentence 4. You are an idiot. You are what’s wrong with this country in regards to racism. I don’t think 95% of this fan base cares if the QB is white, black, Mexican, Chinese or any other ethnic background. We just want the best guy who can take us to the promise land. And if or when that happens there will be a statue of that QB in the middle of this city, regardless of color.

I believe the starter of this team by years end will be the kid, Barkley. There is a very good chance Vick will get hurt and that will open the door for Foles or Barkley to take the job. Barkley’s a winner and a competitor.

I am very excited for tonight’s game, there are so many questions that need to be answered. This process will be fun to watch. Personally, I have no idea if Chip will be a capable coach, I just pray he will be or it’s going to be a while before we are competitive again. GO BIRDS!

Wernhoff, I don’t necessarily agree with godgotvick’s statements. However, to say that his thought process is what is wrong with this country in regards to race is ridiculous to say the least and thing more than scapegoat to cover for the racism that exists. Is the white aryan youth movement, skin heads kkk, hammerskins and other various neo-nazi movements in this country based on an Arican American making a statement about what he believes is racism the cause of these groups existence. Sticking ones head in the sand and acting as if racism does not exist does not make it so or go away, that’s the proble with racism in this country. The desire to try and not acknowledge it’s existence!

After tomorrow game things will help clear the qb position, meaning Vick plays well he will see an increase in snaps. He have a bad game then foles will continue to get reps. The running back situation does not scare me…shady will be successful followed by committee. WRs will be good as the play calling goes as the TEs will move the chains. Defence is where the concerns are, especially the CBs. I hope schemes and play calling is a step up from where its been since JJ here.

Suppose to be a wet nasty rainy day so even though we are going to see them in a game we wont be able to see how good these guys are with out a few dropped balls and slip and falls.

I have not been so excited for a preseason game in years.

New Coach a QB battle, a new Defensive scheme, and all of it still meaningless because PS football is Vanilla anyway right?!?

Preseason is awesome because in a few short weeks we will have the real season!!!!

Jaws today on radio stated that Running QB’s always look good in PS games so I predict Vickmania following his 1st series and then Boo’s when foles is in the next series. Should be interesting.

Come on Foles Lock down this job!

Forget it RegalEagle! the only job Foles has a chance to lock down is carrying the clip board or if Vick gets hurt, and I think Dennis Dixon should have been given a better chance to compete for the No 2. backup position.

Ertz is just what Vick needs! A sure handed-BIG tight end to throw the ball too. Kelly emphasis on getting big matches with Vick as a smaller QB…just like New Orleans did with Brees…small QB-big receivers. With the renewed emphasis on the run game, Ertz is going to thrive with Vick getting him the ball!

G not to be rude, but u need to start proof reading the articles u write because there hard to read at times. Lol. It’s not like ur posting on articles in a blog where it doesn’t matter.

In a football note the article was well informed. Zach Ertz will be the best offensive weapon/pro bowler/ this team has for years to come, other than shady. He’s gonna be a top 5 TE in the league, and I believe was a lot better than Eifert. He can play WR and he is a beast of a blocker. He will see double digit TDs..

Having Mike Vick as the QB of your team is like buying internet porn, it sounds like a good idea, but in the end you’ll be disappointed that you wasted all that money.

Funny how when I mentioned that the birds would take a TE (either Eifert or Ertz) with the 2nd pick…..the idea was almost universally panned…”we don’t NEED a TE”

Now Ertz is everyone’s favourite player (well not everyone’s) who will be indispensable to the offense.

You know why Ertz was drafted? And why I knew? Because new coaches almost always draft new TEs to go with new QBs. Safety blanket to grow with.

Vinnie as much as I like Ertz im not so sure that that was the right pick. Now granted the Eagles will not play Tom Brady 16 games this season but Brady lit up our secondary in training camp. I think the smart pick at 4 would have been Dee Millner and then targeted a OL in the 2nd round.

You have Brent Celek, James Casey and Clay Harbor all three are projected to make the team. As good as Ertz is I still feel like it was more of a need in other position sthat they did not address good enough.

Zach Ertz is the real deal, this is the type of game changing TE the Eagles need and thankfully got. I’m not looking to make predictions off of this game tonight. I will be looking at how both the D line and O line play as a unit and how Chip manages the game tonight. Go Birds…Love them Eagles!!!

He’s the real deal, and a game changer based on what? He didn’t show anything last night…

He has to learn how to block first, or he won’t see the field more than Celek who does both well,……

And you have to put his college tape down, and base your, LOL!!!
“real deal” Honor on his progress as a pro.

I agree with Eagles Sucks, the Eagles didn’t need Zach Ertz. A game changing Linebacker was available to the Eagles, that they actually needed, but Howies has always been right so……….
