Chip Kelly Admits He Made Mistakes Down The Stretch In Eagles Loss

ChipKelly1Eagles coach Chip Kelly admitted he may a number of mistakes in time management down the stretch in Sunday’s loss to the San Diego Chargers.   “That’s on me”, Kelly said to a group of local journalists the Eagles Nova Care Complex this morning.

The Birds were trailing 30-27 with about two minutes left on the game clock.

Eagles quarterback Michael Vick had the wind knocked out of him on a first down throwing attempt to tight end Brent Celek.  Vick was on the ground writhing in pain after the play, so the referee told Kelly and the Birds that Vick needed to be taken out of the game for at least a play.

Kelly didn’t know that he could have used a time out at this point to give Vick more time to get his breath and it also would have allowed to play that the left-handed quarterback on the second down play.  Who knows what would have happened if Vick had been on the field for that second down throw.

Backup quarterback Nick Foles replaced Vick for that throw and threw a fade route to Jackson, which he caught out of bounds.

On the next play, Vick came back into the game but was unable to connect with wide receiver Jason Avant over the middle.  Avant made a mistake on the play because he didn’t use his arms to reach out and catch the with hands, instead he was trying to catch the ball against his body.  The defender reached around him and knocked the ball down to force a field goal attempt.

Kelly also admitted that he and his coaching staff should have tried to take more time off the clock on that drive.  They could have let the clock run down to two minutes, but they snapped just before the two-minute mark.  It would have forced the Chargers to burn some of their timeouts, if the Eagles had taken their time and run the ball a time or two.

“When you look at it in hindsight, we didn’t score (a touchdown), we kicked a field goal, so it was tied”, Kelly said earlier today.   “We wanted to try to score a touchdown and go up four, then make them have to drive the entire field … obviously, if you look back at it, we probably should have run the clock down”.

I didn’t understand the Foles to DJax jump ball call by Kelly. DJax slant Yes, jump ball no.
at 2:03 with Vick and Celek both hurt Coach Kelly should have taken a timeout to organize instead of marching Nick Foles out there in a hurry.

It’s bad news that we did’nt win and take 1st place in the division and go up 2-0, but at the same time, if your going to lose its best when the rest of our division goes 0-3. The lost did’nt really affect us from a playoff stand point or getting the division crown. On the light side, the rest of our division looks horrible. Every single defense looks shitty. So we are not alone. Our offense is definatley the best in the division, along with our special teams. We havent been turning the ball over, like the rest of the division, and our QB has been playing the best ball.
Still though, it’s a long season. Any team can turn it around. I just dont see it happening with the Giants though. They literally have no running game. They even had to bring back brandon jacobs.. LOL.. Who knows if RG3 will be back to normal? They have the worst defense in the division by far. I would rather have our Defense than Washington anyday. ANd tony romo is always going to be tony romo.

You have to run the ball that complete drive since a FG is in the bag for the Tie..
You run the Ball with McCoy.. How he only get 11 Handoffs is beyond me..
Brown with 3 Handoffs– The #1 Rushing Team coming into the Game and they hand-off to NFL RB’s 14 Times was the stroy line of why they lost in my opinion.. and don’t give that garbarg, well the Chargers took away the Running Game.. Then you adjust formations, use double and triple TE’s sets, improvise and adjust by Genius Coach Kelly failed to do so.. This is not the Pac-12 where you simply can outrun and outclass your competition.. Big “F” for Coach Kelly
and this loss is on him.. Vick and D-Jax with Career Days and they still lose.. the Missing component is the lack of a running game and not enough McCoy

What a pleasure to hear a coach stand there n admit he made mistakes, when a person does that he’s more then likely not gonna keep doing it. It also sure beats hearing ‘WE have to do a better job’ with Reid it was never, I made a mistake n will fix it, that’s why he never changed and made the same mistakes over and over. You haters can Crucify Chip all you want but for him to say what he said tells me he’s not playing the role of I know more then you, that’s a great sign.

Paulman you are correct .This loss lies at the feet of the coach, time management F Defensive adjustments didn’t show themselves after halftime we continued rushing 3 or 4 …rarely getting to the qb…missed FG ill say this he’s been $ so I can live with it …but don’t make a habit out of it…our back end of our defense is so weak it’s apparent we can’t cover guys ….you don’t win divisions or NFC games with flaws at safety…it’s why they call it safety ..it’s your last line of defense and to be kind ..I feel anything but safe with Nate Allen ….Boykin played a great game …showing hustle and determination …our pass rushers were neutralized engaged but never over- powering there foes. As I didn’t get too giddy over one win ..ill not get too low in a loss. the fat mans coming and,he’s hungering for respect ….don’t get too chummy …and pray that I gotta do a better job is Andy’s lead statement after the game ..this kc team has rallied to win its first two ..set the tone early by jumping on them and testing there resolve as they can’t score …it could be a perfect set up for a disappointing defense to tee off and write this thing with long rest awaiting he winner …

Agreed. Our offense will need to score a ton of points to make up for this defense. I think the rusty RGIII and poor Redskins gave us a false impression of our defense. Still, the NFC East is looking like a bunch of garbage teams, so even if we are a flawed defensive team, we have a chance in this division.

Kelly is a smart coach. He will learn from these early mistakes.

When Jackson got the first down we should have ran the ball period.aleast once maybe twice. We could’ve gotten a first down; its clear the def. wasn’t stopping anyone when he kept hurrying i turned the TV off, I knew we were going to lose. The offense’s job is to score points. Just because you think they should run the ball with two and three tight and sets doesn’t mean your going to score. You think the D is just going to let them run the ball down there throat? Granted it could happen but as a coach you look at the D and you say why run when there not covering anyone. I watched that game and I was truly amazed at how wide open the receivers continue to be, why would you run? I def. agree that they should have killed the clock and run the ball once they got in field goal range at the end but they didn’t. T. Dungee Last night said you can’t ask the offensive not to score or to go slower, there’s no such thing as scoring to quick and I agree. The Defense has to do there job. Why would you dumb the O down so that the D can keep up? We all know they suck, chip knows they suck, it’s there job to catch up. I for one don’t want the O to slow down so they can catch up. We can all hope for the best but every single guy in here knows that our D sucks and that this is what our season will look like from week to week. 8 and 8, 9 and 7. Just enjoy the ride. I know a loss sucks but I for one see great things, it may take a little while but it’s coming.

You can’t go on that paulman, Vick makes the read and decides what to do based on the defensive scheme, the chargers stuffed the middle, Vick made the correct read to to tuck and throw, he played very well, the run was not available, Vick made the right call, for as much as I was dwn on Vick, he’s played amazing, let’s see and hope he keeps it up

I see alot of people blaming Chip and Vick here. Awful game management at the end I agree. We still could have won the game, despite the awful d performance, if we had ran some clock and taken it down to 2 mins before our 1st and Goal.

That being said, we scored 30 with 19 mins of possession. The way the Chargers played forced us into throwing. They were selling out on the run, and more importantly, they were possessing the ball forever and scoring at will on our defense.

Our defense is completely to blame for this loss. If they make 1 or 2 more stops in this game, we win. We are 2-0. We literally had to throw and score quickly in order to stay in the game.

Another thing, I was calling for Vick to be released at the beginning of the season. He had been pretty bad the last few years, and even in 2010 I thought it was a bit overrated.

But on sunday, he was spectacular. That was probably the best game I’ve ever seen him play. Not sure why we aren’t hearing more about this. He’s easily been a top 5 Qb this year. I still have my doubts because of his inconsistency, but lets give credit where credit is due. He looks excellent.

His clock management was horrific, but how come nobody anywhere, including the media, has said anything about him blowing all 3 TO’s with 1 minute left, giving SD 3 extra plays. Nothing has been mentioned, & nobody asked him about it.

At that point, the Chargers would have run the clock down to 3 seconds and kicked the game-winning field goal with zeroes on the clock.

Yes, Kelly should have burned clock when the Eagles were in easy field goal range and 2 minutes and change to go.

But calling the timeouts when the Chargers were setting up for the field goal was the only way we get the ball back for one last chance.

Its amazing how good a QB looks when he gets protection. Its amazing how a WR looks when hes not asked to run 50 yards down field to “clear out space” for other receivers every play. Its amazing how a QB looks when you use the most dynamic back in the NFL not named AP to run the ball. Can you imagine the wrath of the fans towards Vick If he put up Rothlisberger, Dalton, Weeden, Dalton, Ponder, Eli Manning etc numbers? Doesn’t matter what you did 5 years ago its a what have you done for me lately league. We have fans criticizing Vick because he only threw for 40 yards instead of 600 yards. lol Doesn’t matter that Vick has 0 ints and Eli has 7. We have fans criticizing him for a backwards pass. He’s not allowed to make mistakes.

Eagles will lose to Chiefs also. With this defense the Eagles wont beat the Chiefs either. It has come down “what I mentioned in preseason”, do you sacrifice games to run a defense that you cant run? All this team needs is a little defense to win some games. This division is awful. If your defense is better suited to run a 4-3 right now than run it. Chip has stated putting his players in the best position to win games. I just don’t believe that our players are that much worse than everyone in the NFL that they cant get 1 stop in 6 straight quarters. Not 1. bullshit. Put them in a different defense than.

Chiefs over Eagles 30-24 in an exciting Game
Chiefs Defense has playmakers and will create 2-3 Turnovers which will be the Difference in the Game..
DT D Poe will eat up Kelce and Herremans,
OLB’s Houston & Hall will fly all over and chase Vick all game
And CB Smith and All-Pro Safety Berry will protect the back end
This is the best Defense the Eagłes will face the first half of the Season
So it will be interesting to see how Kelly & Vick will attempt to attack them..
They have Size and Speed and Playmakers
If Chiefs QB Smith plays smart and protects the ball ,
I see them rolling to a 3-0 start..
Vick will have to play another great game just to give the Eagłes a chance
But in the end, those turnovers will be the difference

Expect 2-3 turnovers from Vick thurs night trying to do to much. I expect the Chiefs to take a lead agaist this pathetic defense and Vick trying to keep pace. The problem will be this is a better defense and the offense will feel like they have to score a td every possession. Vick will force things this week. We wiill watch AR smug little smile on the sidelines. Someone should have a sign thanking him for the wonderful draft picks he left us with you bastard!

Davis has to do a better job of calling the game bottom line…Even a bad defense should be able to get 2 punts or more a game. Royal was killing the Eagles from the slot, due to Boykins being moved to the outside. Fletcher’s return should help. Not saying he’s the saving grace by any means, With the personnel on this team the slot is vulnerable unless Boykins is there.

The Chief’s Defensive Unit is the Best from Front to Back that the Eagles will face (and yes, that includes the Bronco’s & Giants Defense’s in Games #4 & #5)
The Chief’s Offense is nothing Special but the Eagles Defense ranks 30th after
2 Games so the Chiefs won’t have to do much to move the ball up and down the field.. Chiefs have excellent Special Teams ..

Rankings after 2 Weeks

Total Offense
#2 Eagles – 477 Yards per Game
#26 Chiefs – 302 Yards per Game

Total Scoring
# 3 Eagles – 31.5 Pts per Game
#16 Chiefs – 22.5 Pts per Game

Total Defense (It’s about Points allowed– Chiefs doing well)
#3 Chiefs – Giving up 9 Pts per Game & 248 Yards per Game
#30 Eagles – Giving up 30 Pts per Game & 460 Yards per Game

Turnovers (both Teams doing well)
Eagles are a Plus 3 in the Give/Take Category
Chiefs are a Plus 4 in the Give/Take Category

Sacks (Chiefs getting a lot of pressure on QB’s)
Eagles have 4 Sacks (ranked 16th out of 32 Teams)
Chiefs have 9 Sacks (tied with Dolphins,Raiders & Bucs for the NFL lead)

I will call them as a i see them,,
Chiefs Defense has “Playmakers and All-Pro’s” at every level of their Defense
from DL, to LB to the Secondary..(D Poe,T Hall,J Houston,D Johnson,S Smith,B Flowers & E Berry will all be legitimate All-Pro Candidates)
meanwhile, the Eagles only have about 3-4 NFL Starting Caliber Defensive
Players on their entire Roster let alone any All-Pro Talent.. (Cox, Barwin & Ryans and then ???)

If Chiefs get 1-2 Turnovers, and more overall Possesions than the Eagles, then they win..

The Cowboy offense is one dimensional. It was garbage in both games this year, they one the first game cuz they forced 6 turnovers.

They’re defense is a mirage. Those so-called all-pros gave up more yards/play, more yards per pass, more overall pass and run yards than our team last year. They played garbage offenses so they’re D rankings are high.

Stop building up the Chiefs since you’re back to being down on the Eagles cuz they lost one game.

What you don’t realize is every week is different in this league. Alex Smith doesn’t have anywhere near the ability to make checks at the line like Rivers.

I specifically mentioned you building up the Chiefs. The Pro Bowl reputation of their players is hype. Go to football reference like I did and you’ll see their “Pro Bowl” D actually was worse than ours in so many categories.

This year they got to go against the worst team in football, and the Cowboys are struggling on offense. The Cowboys offense sucked against the Giants as well.

Their Defensive numbers are built on playing bad offenses. Just like the Eagles were first in defense after their first two games last year. Which happened by beating up a rookie in his first game.

The Eagles offensive numbers (for this year) are built on playing the two worse two defenses in the NFL! The Chargers are ranked 31st and the Redskin are 32nd. Yet you seem to think they are world beaters.

Maybe they aren’t the worst defenses? maybe you meant thus far? But why? maybe the offense is just that damn good….the season is early, you don’t know who the best “anything” is yet…But I’ll tell you this, the Chiefs defense doesn’t need to suck to get abused by our offense…

I agree Real – and the same argument works for the KC defense. Maybe they are THAT GOOD.

I don’t doubt that the Eagles offense will score on any defense – good or bad. But I’m not going to agree that KC’s defense are frauds and for that reason we will win.

KC’s defense might be the best we will play this year. I don’t care what they did last year.

Still slow on the uptake.

If the Chargers and Skins had played the Chiefs opponents, their defensive numbers would be similar to the Chiefs. If the Chiefs had played us and the Packers, their defensive numbers would look like the Redskins

The Eagles had a similar mirage start last year. Your belief that the Chiefs are good goes to what I said earlier. Some of you believe every other team has superstars, while we are talentless.

LOL

I hope you are right skayne. haha

I know one thing for sure – we did play the Chargers and the Skins, and our defense is ranked 29th in the NFL…. I’ll say that again – The Chargers and the Skins made us the 29th ranked team in the NFL…Try putting a good spin on that….

My belief that the Chiefs defense is good is based on the fact that they have good players at key positions. I also believe that the Eagles offense is good because they have good players at key positions.

I believe that the Eagles defense is 29th because they have bad players at key positions.

You’re belief in the Chiefs isn’t based in fact, it’s subjective. Your beliefs aren’t facts.

The facts were the defensive numbers I pointed out in 2012. Facts are that the freaking Raiders held the Jaguars to 9 points. Facts are that the Giants gave up similar yardage to the Cowboys that the Chiefs did.

My belief that KCs defense is good is no more subjective than our belief that the Eagles offense is good – they both have shined against weak teams.

Shined against weak teams? No one is as weak as the Jaguars. They’re in a class of bad all their own.

The Skins and Chargers would both be double digit favorites against the team most responsible for the Chiefs D ranking.

The Browns Offense last yeat with Rookie QB Brandon Weeden playing in his first NFL Game.. By the Way, Weeden was benched this upcoming week in favor of QB Brian Hoyer by the Browns… you got to do a better comparison than this Skayne…

What are you talking about? Weeden sucks, that’s my point! That’s why the Eagles had good defensive numbers after they faced him.

The Chiefs are pulling the same mirage after facing the worst offense in football, who is the only team to have less than 15 points scored after 2 games!

I mean what don’t you understand about what I wrote?

I would take all 4 of those above listed Players an add DL Dontari Poe, Tyson Jackson and CB Sean Smith, CB Brandon Flowers over what the Eagles have on Defense

Cuz you’re basing it on ‘Pro Bowl’ recognition, instead of actual production. You will see when we put up 40 points.

I didn’t see the game against the Chargers. But, the first thing that came into my mind when I heard we lost was “Geez, How the Hell did we let the Chargers score 30 plus points? I knew then that the Defense was the reason we lost.

As for the Chiefs, as well as they have played so far, I think the Eagles can and will win. I trust that our Offense will find a way to put points on the board. It might not be as explosive as they have been in the last couple of games but they will do enough to win. I don’t expect to see a great improvement on this Defense this week. They are what they are. With that being said, I am not all that confident in Big Red’s decision making and I think he will be outcoached.

to add to your point. The Chargers had the ball for OVER 40 MINS!!! They ran the clock from the 1st q. The D could not get off the field… and I dont want to hear anyone say that its cause Kelly strikes fast. The fact of the matter is this…. our d sucks.

Nate Alken should have been flat out released Monday morning after that performance.. safety Eric Wolff is not a Starting Caliber Player either..
Too small and not strong enough , hell, he couldn’t even bring down 5-9″ 170 lbs Eddie Royal to the ground..
If the Eagkes lose back to back Home Games to the Chargers & Chiefs to open the 2013 Season, then they are F’d and looking at
Maybe 4-5 Wins this Season..
This Game Thursday night is for all the marbles to have a chance this Year to be competitive and to be able to pkay meaningful games come December

Agreed Paulman I couldn’t tell the difference between Wolfe or Allen they looked exactly the same. Philly fans and media have this illusion that this 5th round pick is this starting caliber gem we drafted. He is a day late and a dollar short also. He isn’t very good. Bring Colt Anderson in the damn game. He can tackle! He brings a physical presence. Stop giving me shit about he cant cover. Allen and Wolfe cant cover OR tackle.

Wolff is another J Jarrett, the only Difference is that Wolff was sleected where he should have been (5th/6th Rounder) where the Eagles way overreached with local Temple Player Jarrett and grabbed him 2 + Rounds before any other Scouting Report had Jarrett Listed..If any of you recall, I stated that Jarrett would not even be in the NFL by 2014 and it appears I was spot on with him.. Good Kid, Smart, Tough, but just not enough speed or size to play in Todays NFL and though I feel Wolff is more athletic than Jarrett, I still don’t see him as a Starting Caliber Safety in the NFL either…

Kerry Rhodes reputation must really be bad if the Eagles won’t even bring him in to kick his tires. I guess gay won’t play in the NFL.
