Thoughts From Eagles-Raiders

folesrecordsRecording Setting Day For Foles

Nick Foles did his best to prove that the 80-yard showing against the Cowboys was a fluke. The young quarterback had a career day, throwing for over 400 yards and seven touchdowns.

Foles drove the Eagles down the field for a touchdown on a 10-play 84-yard drive, spreading the ball to four different receivers. The second-year quarterback showed a good command of the offense, successfully operating at the pace that head coach Chip Kelly wants to run. His best moment came on a long third down, where he was able to connect with Jeff Maehl for a 19-yard completion to extend the drive.

On the Eagles’ second drive, Foles threw a beautiful pass to Riley Cooper in the back of the endzone. Foles put plenty of air on the pass, putting it in a spot where only his receiver could get it. The quarterback gave his receiver enough time to break free and make the reception.

On the third drive, Foles connected with Riley Cooper for 63-yard touchdown on the first play. Once again, Foles’ timing of the throw was excellent. He made it so that Cooper was the only one who had a chance to catch the ball, and trusted the wideout to make the play.

Foles was even more impressive on the team’s fourth drive. Faced with a third and 16 deep in his own territory, Foles stayed patient, moved around the pocket to buy time, and eventually hooked up with DeSean Jackson for a 17-yard gain. He made another big throw to Jason Avant, and then finished the drive by rolling out and finding a wide open Zach Ertz in the endzone for a touchdown.

At the start of the second half, Foles hit LeSean McCoy for a touchdown pass less than one minute into play. On the next drive, Foles connected with DeSean Jackson for a 46-yard touchdown. Number 9 then hit Riley Cooper in the endzone for a third time today, to give seven touchdown passes, tying the NFL record.

Another Solid Defensive Showing

The Eagles defense had another quality outing, only giving up 13 points to the Raiders while the game mattered.

Terrelle Pryor and the Raiders had some nice moments, and created a couple of big plays, but they had trouble putting the ball in the endzone.

Over the last three weeks, the Eagles’ redzone defense has taken huge strides. They may still give up a lot of yards between the 20’s, but they’re battling to the bitter end and forcing teams to settle for three. That may not exactly be lockdown defense, but its the type of defense that can help win you some football games.

Quick Thoughts

Offense

  • Riley Cooper gave the Eagles another strong game. Cooper gained 42 yards on a wide receiver screen to help set up the team’s first touchdown, and then caught his third score of the season in the second quarter. Cooper then caught a 63-yard bomb from Foles on the third drive to put the Eagles up 21-3. Number 14 then caught a third touchdown in the second half.
  • The offensive line put forth one of their better games of the season. They blocked well for Foles, and gave him all the time in the world to deliver on his throws.
  • Bryce Brown finally gave the team a bit of a spark at the end of the first quarter with a 34-yard run. Brown finished with 51 rushing yards, seven more than LeSean McCoy.
  • The tight ends had their most impactful game of the season, with both Brent Celek and Zach Ertz catching touchdown passes.
  • However, not even on a day where Foles had 400 yards and seven touchdowns could expensive free agent acquisition James Casey get into the mix.
  • DeSean Jackson caught five balls for 150 yards and a touchdown.
  • Nick Foles spread the ball to seven different receivers.
  • Matt Barkley took over for Foles in the fourth quarter.
  • If you’re Chip Kelly, how do you not give Foles the chance to get the record setting eighth touchdown? Foles may never have a chance to do something so extraordinary for the rest of his career.

Defense

  • Mychal Kendricks was used as a spy on Terrelle Pryor, but didn’t do a very good job in the role, allowing Pryor to rush for 94 yards on 10 carries.
  • Bradley Fletcher and Connor Barwin each came away with interceptions on tipped balls.
  • Earl Wolff got another start at safety, and batted down a pass from Pryor on a blitz in the first quarter.
  • Bennie Logan got the start at nose tackle, but had a quiet game.
  • Vinny Curry picked up another sack.
  • Cary Williams did a nice job breaking up a couple of passes.

Special Teams

  • A running into the kicker penalty on Kurt Coleman kept the opening drive alive for the Raiders.
  • DeSean Jackson had a nice punt return, but picked up a careless penalty by putting his arm into the facemask of Oakland punter Marquette King.

Final Thoughts

This is why its important for Nick Foles to play.

Michael Vick had a great training camp, and he earned the right to be the team’s starter at the beginning of the year. At the time, he clearly outplayed Foles, and it really wasn’t much of a contest.

However, we’re now nine games into the season and things have changed. Vick had two good games to start the season, but hasn’t played at an exceptional level since the San Diego game. Since then he’s had starts that have been either bad or just OK at best, or he hasn’t been able to keep himself healthy and on the field.

Over the last month, Nick Foles has seen significant action in four games. He’s played extremely well in three of them. Just like Vick earned the right to begin the season as the starter with great play over one month in the preseason, Foles has now earned the right to be the team’s starter with great play over one month in the regular season.

Plain and simple, it should be his turn.

He’s shown enough over the last month that the Eagles owe it to themselves and their future to give him these final seven games of the year to show what he’s got.

The Eagles need to know if he’s really capable of consistently running the offense at a level of efficiency this high. The team spent a pretty high draft pick on him a year and a half ago, and they can’t afford to go into his third year still undecided about his future.

Let Foles start. Let him sink or swim. Understand that every quarterback has a bad day every now and then. Understand that young quarterbacks naturally go through ups and downs…its part of the growth and development process.

But most of all, understand that the only way that the Eagles are going to find out if the real Nick Foles is closer to the guy we’ve seen look great against the Giants, Buccaneers, and Raiders, or the guy who looked miserable against the Cowboys…is if he plays.

The guy on NFL REDZONE just said that Mike Vick just had, statistically, the greatest game of any NFL QB in history.

Ever.

Good thing the birds decided to WIN NOW with Vick.

I was so wrong.

Damn good game. This years draft picks, Johnson, Ertz, Logan and Wolffe played very well. It all comes in time. Nick Foles…man, To see him rebound with a performance like that is tremendous. Defense is ballin and playing physical..Overall great game!

That was a special game for Foles. Best game so far for the offensive line as far as pass protection goes, but a lot of it was Foles getting rid of the ball quickly. Riley Cooper has turned into a credible threat.

I’m convinced that Foles was concussed on the 4th play of the Cowboys game, it’s the only thing that makes sense at this point.

E-money, I have the same question. How can Foles play so well against Tampa and Oakland, and have the Dallas debacle in between.

Regardless, this is nothing but positive. Actually historic, but definitely Kelly turned things around from the previous two weeks.

Our defense did a really good job, and so did special teams.

Read the article All-22: Maybe Nick Foles Suffered The Concussion Earlier Than We Thought?

I’m convinced he got his bell rung early and gutted it out against the cowboys.

I’m not saying he’s the 2nd coming of Joe Cool, but when he’s on, this offense clicks. I think he’s a keeper for at least the backup position. I still want them to draft somebody, but the rest of the season could change my mind if the offense plays this way.

I am not a fan of conspiracy theories, or making too many excuses for a poor performance, but you watch how he played in Tampa and today, and you see how he “shit the bed” in Dallas. It just didn’t make sense. I will look to read the All-22 article. Hopefully today is more of what we can come to expect from Foles. I want to see him stay healthy also, in only a limited number of games and he has had a number of injuries.

Overall a really great game by the offense, defense and special teams.

Foles went from 1 of the worst games I’ve seen ever, to 1 of the best I’ve ever seen. All I can say, is WOW! Almost perfection, against another top ten team defense. I don’t know what to think with this dude. Is this the real Foles, is it the Dallas horror, or somewhere in between. What ever it is, I think the fans of the “Birds” agree, that you have to play him the rest of the year, to see what you got, to see if we have to go for a QB in the 1st. Because IMHO, Vick is done.

IHDK DCar, but you can’t take this performance away from him. No QB in Eagles HISTORY, has EVER had a game like that.

If you give him a complement to DeSean, it takes pressure off DeSean, Shady, and Nick, to keep Defenses honest…I’ll say it again…Josh Gordon – I know, I know,… you don’t like him, but he should be the target.

Now fix the Defense – Yes the Defense needs upgrades – I don’t care how well some feel they have played. We are always rationalizing, our team, and certain players are better than they really are, and that is a mistake.

We need Rush OLB’s, Offensive Line upgrades, and Depth, at least 1 WR, and a more consistent KR/PR, so that we don’t have to use DeSean Jackson, and upgrade our Secondary in Free Agency. They should be able to compete next year, for a serious run, if they don’t get too comfortable with what they have, thinking they have more than they think they do on Defense.

There is no doubting how very talented of a WR Gordon is, & I don’t dislike him, but he is an immature dumb@$$, who can’t stay clean, & is 1 failed drug test away from a year long suspension. Think Blackmon, Britt. No thanks, we already have enough immature dumb@$$e$. Agree with everything else.

There is not a WR, in the draft that is ready to step in, start, and make an immediate impact. But, There is plenty of talent to develop, for depth, and possible future impact. So I wouldn’t go WR, in the first Round of the draft this year, but absolutely 3rd, 4th Round.

Defensive impact has to be 1st Priority, Undervaluing that, would be a mistake…But that just GMCliff’s thinking.

gmc, I think you are undervaluing Evans, Robinson, & Matthews. All big, talented, & #1, & potential #1 WR’s. They won’t fall to the 2-3 rounds. Coleman, Moncrief, & Street probably will though. Coleman is a widcard, before this year, he was thought to be another Andre Johnson/ VJax type. He’s having a down year thus far, though.

I’m not undervaluing Robinson, and Matthews. I had them on my list in the other post as you recall. I know they are going to test slow at the combine, and as you know DCar, these Scouts, and GM’s at times put too much value on straight-line speed.

They run about 4.5- 4.6. I think they could last until the 2-3rd Rounds, depending on how they do at the combine. That’s what I am saying brother.

No lack of appreciation for any of the 3, although I Evans will be selected in the 1st Round, again depending on his combine performance.

Also, other than LB’s Barr, Mack, & the underwhelming, overhyped, dog Clowney, who on DF, is worth a high 1st rounder this year. Nix is a monster, but is just a lane clogger, makes no plays. Clinton-Dix is going to be over drafted. The draft is very weak on the defensive side of the ball, especially in our areas of dire need (Secondary, NT, ILB, 5 tech DE). This year, unfortunately, is all about the QB’s, O-line, WR, in the 1st 2 rounds of the draft. If Foles keps playing at a good pace, we won’t need a QB. But regardless, I think we’d be right in position to draft OT’s Lewan, Matthews, & Cyrus Kouandjio, WR Evans, OLB Mack, NT Nix, & 5 tech DE Tuitt (I hate ND players). We might get lucky, if Foles continue to improve, because all of the top losing teams in the NFL, all need QB’s & I think Jax, TB, Minn, Texans, & maybe even the Rams (Bradford major injury), go QB. We’ll see.

A dominating performance by the Offensive line in pass blocking. With the horrible play from Oakland’s defense…defenders falling on the ground, no pass rush at all.. They didn’t have a single hurry or sack all day…now Foles has to show some consistency…and I want to see Foles when everything is not so good….when there is some pass rush…that will us a lot more about him.

Vinnie you are an embarrassment…the reason why we had such increased hopes for this Eagles team this year was the explosion we seen from the offense in the Washington game. What we know from Foles is that if receivers get open and O-line gives him all day…he will look good. But we know you want us to anoint him the next Peyton Manning…but we will see…we will see when there is some pressure on him how he performs and hopefully he will do well

We know what he looks like when things go perfectly – Tampa and Oakland are indicative of that. But how many times is that going to happen?

Can he win the close games, when ish isnt’t going well or he effs up (think the Carolina game today) and receivers aren’t open all over the place. I’m glad for the win. It was a GREAT game by Foles and everyone. But yeah..my opinion of him hasn’t changed.

This is very much like his time at Arizona…wildly inconsistent. But he will have (more) time to show more. Goodness knows we need him to do well if we want to stay in this playoff hunt.

Denny, Lets not lose sight of the fact this is, a 3rd Round draft pick, that was originally drafted for developmental purposes, and not taken seriously as a potential starter immediately. That being said he has excelled expectations. My opinion of him is at his point you have to put more of a value on him, than you would any undrafted, College QB, that may not be as talented – although more athletic – than Foles.

My concern, is the thinking of the front office, that the will rationalize, that, that is what is needed to improve. Do you think Mariota, Bridgewater, or Boyd, could have had a game like that? Obviously, he is just as talented, but what sets him apart from those Overhyped Prospects is his experience in the NFL – At least, he has already had success on this level……

It’s also a mistake because they could ignore more pressing needs on the Defensive side of the ball…..I do think Nick Foles is our future, but that is just my opinion. There should be no more questioning whether or not he can run a Chip Kelly Offense.

He had a perfect QB rating today and tied an NFL record for TD’s in a game (by the 3rd qtr actually), I guess that is…just ok by your standards.

I would say that he did well in a close game in the first Giants game when he came in for the injured Vick. No doubt, I have said it before and I will say it again, that Dallas game really bothers me. Until we see more games from Foles, can we truly say that it was a terrible performance, no excuses here.

Again….games like this are EXACTLY why he should have been starting from week 1 whether he (barely) lost the QB ‘competition’ or not. Vick is the past. Foles may (hopefully) be the future.

A big win today, and every win is an important one regardless of who they’re playing. Congrats to Nick Foles on a career day. But let me say this. I judge this defense by the quality of QB they face. So the true test will come next Sunday against Aaron Rodgers and that potent offense that is really starting to gel. I loved the way the defense played today but Terrelle Pryor is no Aaron Rodgers. We’ll be facing arguably the best QB in the NFL next Sunday in their stadium in Green Bay. So let’s enjoy this win, but know that this defense still has a lot of work ahead of them and will truly be tested next week..

That is so true JH. I am not fooled by this defenses play against mediocre Offenses. In order to be considered GREAT Defenses, you have to dominate GREAT Offenses, with GREAT QB’s. This Defense still needs upgrades.

“We know what he looks like when things go perfectly – Tampa and Oakland are indicative of that.

Goodness knows we need him to do well if we want to stay in this playoff hunt.”

This is the kind of stuff put out by Twitter Birds that fosters inaccuracy and lack of knowledge.

Foles last year at Arizona, 2012, he was the top rated QB in the Pac-12…The only things that hindered Foles at Arizona were he decision by the head coach, in his first year, to go with ‘a running QB who would open up the defense’ and an injury his second year.

Foles play was top notch: Kelly knows him because of the way he [layed at Arizona against Oregon.

In any case, Foles is not ready for Canton, and he won’t throw seven TDs against Green Bay.

Please remember that Kelly has more to protect than Foles, as he works for Lurie/Roseman and makes 6 million a year.

Kelly is not ready to get completely behind Foles like Belichik did when Bledsoe went down at NE, and Brady stepped in…And, in that case, it took Brady four/five games to really find his groove.

Thank you.

I think Foles heard his owner advertise an NFL Franchise QB job and forced his resume on to the desk for a longer perusal.

We not only turned back the clocks we took a freaking time machine to foles gold.he laid his stake and his claim ,to philly and the nfl,I’m the man,hop on ill carry us where we need to go.good for you nick, good for all who bleed green.we have a true litmus test vs Rogers and Green Bay ,and then need return home ,where wins have been ,so long ago ,our coach was a heavier version…definite kudos to a defensive side of the ball that competes at a high level …foles strengths exhibited is a thorough understanding of the offense and his ability to have guys break there routes and find the ball awaiting them.that allows for yards after the catch, big. Time ..build on this and get back to 500 and put the thanks back into thanks giving…

This is mildly perplexing. Foles was fantastic, had great protection from the O line. But with good time, many quarterbacks at the NFL level will look very good as the rules favor the offense and have become more restrictive for the defensive players. Oakland and Tampa are very bad football teams, but counter to that, Foles is still a young player who will have fluctuations in his level of consistency. He did perform extremely well against those two bad teams. It seems that there is no other choice than to keep playing him, even when he inevitably struggles again, in order to find out if he can grow into the type of qb that can play well against the better teams. I am by no means convinced that he can become an upper tier qb, but he has played well enough to deserve the chance to sink or swim. I sure wish Maclin hadn’t blown out that knee, his abscence changes the whole reciever corps, and therefore the way the offense functions.Bump Jackson to #2 and Cooper to #4 with his focus on special teams rather than the #2 spot and it is a whole different ballgame. Nobody in Philadelphia wants to hear it, but patience and time are the only way there will be any answers.

Foles is only going to IMPROVE OVER TIME.

Yes, he will with the right coach and the right team…The Eagles have the potential to be that team.

A couple of interesting comments from ESPN talking heads: Supposedly, Foles had the best day, statistically across the board, of any QB in NFL history.

Also, Cam Newton has produced more TDs, both running and passing, than any QB in his first three years with the exception of Dan Marino, who obviously produced his TDs through the air.

And do take note that the Panthers and Cam Newton have a Record of below
.500 in his 3 Seasons with zero playoff appearances..
Stats are all relative to how the “Team” Plays
(Panthers & Newton are playing very well right now and winner of 4 Games in a row Fyi)

Looking over the 2012 draft class. When did: Andrew Luck, RG3, Russel Wilson, or Tannehill throw 7TD passes and 0 Interceptions?

Foles did this in his 9th game! So far those guys have already started 20+ games.

Why not take a look at the 2011 draft class.. I wonder how many of those guys achieved this feat and they played 30+ games.. lol

Foles is the Franchise. Game OVER

Time to give up your bias’s… both sides… and do what most of us do… root for the team.

Let’s hope so Stevo.

This week will be a real test for our defense. Hopefully they will continue to play better and better as a unit. I was down on Davis as DC and his early season results, but he needs to be getting some credit for turning things around and getting these guys playing more together as a unit.

SMH…typical knee jerk reaction…we have seen it with Kevin Kolb, AJ Feeley, and now Nick Foles! Now Foles is better than RG3, Andrew Luck…he’s the next Peyton Manning!
Spare me! ..
All I saw was enough to convince me that Foles will beat you if you let him sit in the pocket with no pressure or pass rush and receivers are wide open…
But in the pressure of competition against Vick in the preseason…he folded…in the pressure of the Dallas game…he folded even worst…
The question remains…can Foles handle the pressure of being this franchise QB..I am not convinced at all

Vick is hurt. He is out of the equation until he gets healthy enough to play. I dont know how bad Foles can get…he may be as bad as the Dallas…all I notice is that he does not seem that good under pressure. If the O-line gives him plenty of time to throw and dont let him get hit…he will be probably be ok…and they should be able to block…but lets see him in the next games come up with some wins

It’s time to let the Vick thing go..Foles threw more TD’s in one game than Vick has all season. No int’s. Just like the Tampa game the Raiders were supposed to have a vaunted defense…as soon as the Eagles shred them that same defense must not really be that good, atleast suspect. The Raiders did play man today…not zone. Go Eagles!

Now if he plays like he did yesterday for the upcoming games and he turns out to be the next Tom Brady…Hell yeah…see ya Vick…but ya gotta go!
But I’m not convinced at all…if he is what you guys think he is…then we will go to the playoffs and do well…if he is not…then we are in the same situation

That was fucking amazing. Best QB performance in Eagles history and pretty much NFL history which is fucking insane when you think about it.

Should Foles be given the franchise QB job going into next year? NO not yet at least.

Should he be the starter the remainder of the season? YEs, because he is the best QB on this team. Just look at the season stats if you need proof. Its ridiculous to even argue about it anymore. He threw more TDs in 3 quarters today than Vick has thrown ALL season. And he hasn’t even thrown an INT yet (300 plus pass attempts I think which is ridiculous considering his inexperience)

But again just because you are better than Vick or Barkley doesn’t mean shit really going forward. The ultimate decision will be made at the end of the season.

I also give the kid props for his mental toughness today. I said that Dallas game really irked me when it came to the mental part of his game (i think he has the talent to make the throws, but I questioned his mental toughness after that bad game). Maybe he got that concussion early who knows…

All im saying is to rebound with a game like this(stat wise prolly best QB game ever), after that poor game and most importantly, days after our owner who never speaks says the number one priority of this team right now is to find a franchise QB (and basically says its up to Foles or draft) showed me something. For real Eagle fans out there, keep playing well and maybe we can go Barr or Watkins in the draft.

If not that 1st round pick will need to be a QB. Which means our SB hopes will be delayed even longer.

There is no way on God’s green earth that Kelly would go back to Vick now. Foles would have to get hurt or play consecutive games similar to Dallas.

Big test next week up at Lambeau with Packers who will be on short rest. Will be a great test for Foles to see if he can put together another solid performance. Obviously it won’t be anything similar to the Oakland game but I would love for this guy to prove that the franchise QB is in fact on this roster.

Yet the same posters make every damn post about Vick and somehow that’s just critical insightful commentary? You can’t compare what TS and Skayne does to what Vinnie and his merry band of girl scouts do. EVERY FUCKING POST VINNIE TYPES IS ABOUT VICK. Responding and calling this obsessive shit out does not remotely come close to being a vickpologist. Those of you who continue along this line of rationalization are as bad as this asshole. Are you kidding me? The people on here that defend Vick do not always post insightful meaningful posts. I have seen plenty of ridiculous runs against Foles even when he has good games. I don’t defend Vinnie. He has an obsession and he and I have actually argued before as well, but I will see your Vinne with Theone1 who was saying that he was gonna eff everyone’s mom last week because people disagree with him.

You can choose to see what you want but there are people on this site that want Vick to succeed and Foles to fail and there are people on this site that want Foles to succeed and Vick to fail. Neither side seems to care about the team overall. If you want to do an overall count, you are probably right that more negative posts are about Vick, but I have seen my share of negative posts today of all freakin days about Foles. The day after he threw 7 td passes.

Then there are guys in the middle like Biglion and Stevo who want the team to succeed.

I don’t know if Foles is the real deal – but I know that Payton Manning and Drew Brees are the real deal, and the Packers would likely beat either one of them at Lambeau. So it won’t prove nothing to me if Foles loses to the Packers.

It sure hasn’t proved anything to you Vick supporters that Vick is 5-11 in the last two years – That’s not his fault.

If the Eagles bring in a QB that is better than a Vick…than I’m all for cutting him and getting rid of him. Foles had a chance to prove he was better in training camp…he didnt do it. Vick played well when he was healthy. Foles had the worst game in the biggest moment that I have ever seen. coldbrrewski, I have paid close to 10K so far to watch the Eagles lose 10 straight games. I had hoped that things would get better when Chip Kelly was hired.

But things didn’t get better because the genius had to make the same mistakes as others by bringing back Vick. Now he knows he made a mistake – he won’t admit it, but he knows it, and the owner know it…

To me, that means Chip is not a genius. And I have paid for my ticket to bitch about it….. If you don’t like it then don’t read my post. I can tell you that I never read yours, unless my name is mentioned. You do nothing but defend Vick in all you post so who cares to read it….

You have that backwards don’t you. My comment was related to all of the negativity that was being throw at Foles after his historic performance. You appear to be having a problem reading a very short statement.

As they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” or “the cup is half full”. Make no mistake, I am ecstatic that the Eagles won this week. I was just as ecstatic when they won the 1st week against the Redskins. What you don’t seem to understand I don’t care who the players on in the uniforms, I want to see this team continue to get better and better. They are coming together on both sides of the ball, and also the special teams.

This team is starting to get some answers on what direction it will move in the Kelly era. We need to get answers at not just the QB position but there are aging linemen, safeties and others.

My question was related to the blindly loyal fans of a player who are so very negative about the team after the so very positive performance by the team. You may not see it BL because you are predisposed to see it differently. I see the Birds winning and I see them getting some answers about players that will help them make some very important personnel decisions in the near future.
