Notes From The Phillies’ 4-0 Loss To New York

migThe Philadelphia Phillies lost their Grapefruit League match against the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon.

  • Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez made his Phillies debut today, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over 1.2 innings.
  • Gonzalez entered the game in the third inning, and got off to a good start by striking out the first two batters he faced. However, Gonzalez would struggle to get out of the frame, loading the bases by giving up a single and two walks. To his credit, the Cuban product was able to get Brian Roberts to ground out to end in the inning with no damage.
  • Gonzalez would struggle in the fourth as well. He began the inning with two more walks, and then gave up an RBI single to Ichiro. The rookie failed to make it out of the inning, and was replaced by Kevin Munson.
  • Jeremy Horst made his Spring Training debut, and turned in a poor performance, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.
  • Shawn Camp pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game.
  • The Phillies offense managed just five hits today, none of which went for extra bases.
  • Jimmy Rollins had one of the team’s hits, finishing 1-2.
  • Ben Revere went 0-3 at the top of the order.
  • Bobby Abreu started in right field and went 1-3, picking up his first hit of the Spring.
  • Domonic Brown went 0-3 with two strikeouts.
  • Cody Asche went 0-3, leaving two runners on, and also committed a throwing error.
  • Cesar Hernandez went 1-3 with a single.

Final Thoughts

When you think of Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez’s tenure with the Phillies, there sure haven’t been a lot of positives to talk about.

There’s been talk of shoulder problems, rust, and lack of control.

All four walks that Gonzalez gave up today were on just four pitches. Again, its only one outing, but when a guy is struggling so badly to locate the strike zone its pretty alarming.

Remember back in the summer, the Phillies were originally going to sign this guy to a deal worth over $60 million? They may have really dodged a payroll bullet there.

The Phillies also announced that Ethan Martin will be shut down for about three weeks with a shoulder injury.
