howardhhThe Philadelphia Phillies won the first game of their series against the Colorado Rockies 9-0 on Monday. Their record improves to 21-26.

  • Ryan Howard led the offensive charge for the Phils, going 3-4 with five RBI’s.
  • Howard drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the fourth, extended the team’s lead with a two-run homer in the sixth, and singled home two more runs in the seventh.
  • Ben Revere had another effective game in the lead-off spot, going 3-5 with an RBI single.
  • Chase Utley went 3-5 with another double, and drove in a run.
  • John Mayberry hit a pinch-hit two-run homer.
  • Mike Adams got the final out of the seventh inning.
  • Antonio Bastardo pitched a scoreless eighth.
  • Recently recalled Justin De Fratus worked a clean ninth.

Final Thoughts

We caught a glimpse of the old Ryan Howard yesterday.

Producing one of his strongest games of the season, Howard broke the Phillies’ scoreless inning streak and supplied three of their first four runs to take control of the first game of this series against the Rockies.

Nice to see Kyle Kendrick finally get back into the win column. Kendrick has quietly assumed the role of hard-luck starter that Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels had carried over the last few years. Kendrick seems to be the one guy in the rotation who pitches well, but gets abysmal run support. As a result, he was 0-5 on the year going into this game despite putting together mostly quality performances this year.
