Thoughts/Expectations For The 2014-15 76ers’ Season

tankBasketball hasn’t been kind to Philadelphia for some time now.

As someone who genuinely loves the sport and the 76er franchise, believe me when I say I understand that what this franchise has gone through and continues to go through is not an easy thing for fans to endure and sit through.

Just sit down and think for a second about all of the rotten, disappointing names and moments that the Sixers have gone through ever since their run to the finals about 15 years ago.

We’ve gone through Larry Brown, Randy Ayers, Chris Ford, Jim O’Brien, Maurice Cheeks, Tony Di’Leo, Eddie Jordan, Doug Collins, and now Brett Brown as our head coaches. We’ve watched guys like Chris Webber, Glen Robinson, and Andrew Bynum come to town and steal money. We’ve been letdown by other high-priced free agents like Elton Brand, or high draft picks like Evan Turner. We’ve watched a delusional organization spend more than half a decade trying to sell to us that Andre Iguodala was a superstar that you could build around in this league.

And after going through a 19-63 season that was dedicated to losing in the name of the future, the NBA Draft came and went with the Sixers missing out on the top two prospects and had to settle for an injured big man in Joel Embiid. Not only that, but the Sixers’ other top 10 selection, Dario Saric, won’t even make an appearance in Philadelphia this year after signing on to play in Turkey. This organization had two top 10 picks in what was considered to be a deep draft, and when the season tips off this week, they will have nothing to show for it on the court.

Oh, and reigning rookie of the year Michael Carter-Williams has been battling a shoulder injury and won’t be ready to go to start the season.

To say that its been rough being a Sixers fan is quite the understatement.

We’re looking at another season in the tank, possibly with even fewer victories than what we had a year ago.

However, as difficult as this is to go through, I still fully support what Sam Hinkie and the franchise are doing. I understand the roster that they have right now is mostly garbage, but and certainly a terrible product to watch…but so what? The Sixers have tried to get better “the right way” for a decade and a half, and it just doesn’t work in this league. To those opposed to the current strategy, what would your plan have been for this off-season? Would you have gone out and given Lance Stephenson a max-deal along with a couple of other B-level stars so that this team could win between 38-40 games, sneak in to the playoffs as an eighth seed and then get to play four extra, humiliating games against a top seed?

We’ve read that book plenty of times, and we know very well how it ends. Tanking may not be fun to watch, but we need to be patient and give this strategy a chance to play itself out. While we wait for Embiid to get healthy, and Saric to arrive from Turkey, Brett Brown will do what he can with what he’s given, and try to unearth a couple of gems from the league’s scrapheap.

There’s actually a couple of guys on the roster that I’m a little interested in watching this year.

Obviously, the tandem of the last year’s top picks MCW and Nerlens Noel is something to keep an eye on. I don’t know that Noel can be a star in this league, but the potential is there. He needs to get himself a little bigger to sustain the pounding he’ll take over the course of a season. Second-round pick K.J. McDaniels has been a shot-blocking machine in the preseason, and I’ll be curious to see if that can translate to the regular season. Center Henry Sims played hard once he was acquired in a trade with Cleveland last year, and I want to see what he can do in a full year with Brett Brown.

I have the Sixers down for 14 wins this year.

I’m sorry Denny this argument is a cop out, fact is you and I and anyone is posts here doesn’t get paid to think up a strategy better then this current nonsense and the man who does is in my opinion a certified con artist. Think about this, they are 23 million under the minimum salary floor which means if 150 people show up a night to watch this crap they still make money. A complete and total farce. Trading guys for 2019 2nd round picks this strategy makes no sense whatsoever. No guarantee Saric comes over no guarantee Embiid or Noel can be difference makers but hey two things we know for sure is this train wreck will be historically bad and they will still make money.

23 million below the salary cap minimum, 10 of the 15 guys on the roster who shouldn’t be in the NBA, historically bad and still have people cosigning on what’s going on. the only strategy going on here is how to lose games and still make money.

Bigs I love you like a brother but IJ is correct in regards to the route Hinke and Co. are taking. By no stretch was I ever a fan of tanking in the TRADITIONAL sense. But seeing as the league, the media, and far too many delusional fans turned a blind eye to the phantom injuries and DNPs by teams with legit rosters for years, I’m all in with Hinke and crew shitting on the league now. at least with the Sixers you’re seeing them actually be upfront with there intent. no stashing stars on bogus IR and extending the minutes of bench warmers trying to win the race out of the last seed into the lottery. I got real tired of that nonsense while everyone pretended not to notice. The Sixers simply played the league by gutting their roster of players that clearly could not help them win, along with bad contracts to boot. They refuse to overpay for players that ARE NOT WORTH IT and are now in the drivers seat with a ton of cap and lottery picks to seal the deal. If we are going into season 3 without a meaningful thrust to mesh what we’ve currently put together, then I’ll worry. But season 2 into this strategy deserves the same consideration we’ve given the prior 15 before Hinke’s arrival.

Great article Denny. You get exactly what is going on and understand what had to be done with the rules the NBA had in play. I love people talk about the strategy then your ask them what you would have done this off-season they have no answer because they don’t watch the MBA enough to closely identify talent our future free agents etc.
There was absolutely nothing on the free agent market that made sense to then outside of over paying Lance Stephensen. Ahh if the young free agents wetter restricted and were not going to be pried away. The ended up with the ROY last year and the rights to the best player on last year’s draft. Cleared horrible contract in Bynum and walked away from mediocre players in Young Hawes Turner. This team had no real talent either than Turner. That damn simple.

What is going on here is the systemic breakdown of the NBA– the only way to MAYBE and notice the MAYBE IS IN CAPS is to be historically bad and then HOPE that the 19 year olds you draft are superstars. In the meantime you tank and put out a putrid product, still charge NBA prices and make people over pay for parking, beer and hot dogs. You send a ‘chance to dance on the floor at halftime’ promotion out to every youth cheerleading, dance group in the area so you can sell 50-100 tickets to friends and family who want to see their daughter in the bright lights.
The NBA needs to eliminate some teams to tighten up the talent base.

The Sixers were the first team with the balls to actually TANK legitimately. The old way was 10x worst. But apparently the league and media talking heads were fine with this as long as certain legacy teams or annoited markets somehow benefited. So I’ll let others pretend it’s dumb luck that the Spurs couldn’t beat the Little Sisters of the Poor when Robinson went down; or the Celtics just being in the right place at the right time along with unworldly personnel moves (yeah ok); or the Lakers and…..f-it the list is too long.

IJ i don’t need to speak for big but in fairness he would probably suggest drafting players that can actually play to improve your team. Spend on some mid level FA and try to get in the playoffs. The goal is to try to win.

That said I understand what they are doing and why they are doing it but it leaves a real bad taste in the mouth for sure!

Identify them then. I’m all for it.

Seems to me last year’s draft they had the best rookie and drafted the best talent. This years draft the drafted the best talent fixed a terrible trade in Bynum recouping draft picks and have the best international prospect as well.
In a two year span this team went from having a franchise killer in Bynum, a bust letdown in Turner, limited cap space and future picks traded and flat out terrible. To having young Tashkent cap space and draft picks and being terrible.

Sorry but you can keep the mediocrity.

And Spencer Hawes sitting 3ptrs….NONSENSE.

well then the current CBA agreement and league are a mockery of professional sports.
As I said I know what they are trying to accomplish and why they are doing it.

Maybe they should come clean and say… ‘because of the current CBA and the way the league is structured the only way to eventually MAYBE be good is to tank for 3-5 years and HOPE that the 19 year olds we draft are Kevin Durant. Until then we will charge minor league prices, minor league parking rates. Kids under 12 get an upper deck ticket free when accompanied by an adult who pays $8 for a ticket! “

Sixers have a two pronged attack to getting better. Tank and the draft for a 3 year window and free up cap space for free agents or trade possibilities. You don’t sirens that 23 million on anything but one year rentals if that, and you keep that space until end of 2016 where the free agent class will be full and the estimate cap will jump to 80 million. Of course there are intangibles and he’ll luck that had to go into it but with the state the franchise was in last 5 years before last year it’s the only chance you can take. Unless youre L.A. or New York best route is through the draft.

All you have to do is watch Anthony Davis last night. Your not getting better as a franchise wallowing between 30_40 wins this isn’t the NFL. The NBA is a 1 player turnaround league. Jesus….HINKIE CAME FROM HOUSTON!!!!!

So Oklahoma City is the blueprint or Houston that’s the only examples of how to get a winning franchise? How about Portland’s approach of identifying and drafting real good basketball players and putting a team together, how many seasons did they tank to assemble that roster? How about using some of that advanced statistics background and putting something watchable on the floor.

Jesus Christ do your homework or just stop talking about basketball.

Lets talk about the Portland Trailblazers.

Three best players
1. Damon Lillard
2. LaMarcus Aldridge
3. Nicolas Batum

The have drafted in the top 10 since 05….a ten 10 year window just about…5 TIMES….with two additional top 12 picks.

Two best players were drafted 2nd and 6th respectively.

When the only one 21 games….I REPEAT 21 GAMES….the next year they were able to fleece the Bulls to trade Tyrus Thomas for Lamarcus Aldridge.

When they only one 28 games…they were able to draft Damian Lillard.

Thats not mentioning having the no.1 overall pick….and drafting in that ten year window with first round picks

1. Nolan Smith
2.Martell Webster
3. Victor Claver

So you were saying about the draft etc. ?

Dont talk to me about basketball unless we are going to talk real basketball and not hype.

Portland won 21 and 28 games while fielding legitimate NBA players and competing traded for assets and drafted well. Now what do we have here MCW who’s injured and won’t be here long term. Noel who might be defensive player of the year material. Embiid who might turn out to be a franchise player and Saric who might play here in a couple of years. And KJ another defensive player of the year possibility. Bright time ahead indeed.

during the summer league Nerlans Noel was attacking refs about his defensive fouls and lack of calls committed against him on the offensive end. It was Evan Turner-esque. He didn’t seem to do it in the preseason though which is good. I hate that petulant child whining. That was one thing I admired about Thad Young, he never complained about calls.

Joel Embiid wanted to go to the Lakers, his agent wanted him to go the Lakers. Will the Sixers be able to keep these draft picks? These players see Philly’s arena seats empty then go on the road and see SA, LA, OKC, Chicago packed with active supporting fans.

Noel certainly looks good for his first game at half time defensively and on the boards. If he could hit free throws he would average a double double but his outside shot is so bad they play off him negating his speed on the dribble. If he can develop a 12 footer he would average 18 pts.( without it he is only a 9 point a game guy)

This is what you called for; the complete dismantling of the 2012 Philadelphia Sixers and the termination of the entire Front office and scouting departments. ( Thorn, Dileo, Collins, Snyder all gone) You called for Turner, Hawes, Young, Brand, Iggy, & Lou Williams to be removed and to start from scratch. It’s about having the opportunity to have a chance at those players. Anyone with any knowledge and follows the NBA knows that. The NBA is a one player Franchise changing league. Basketball in general is one player team changing game. Ive talked to you more than once and I know your primary background is football. You are approaching everything they are doing like they are building a football team etc. THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS.

Miami tanked for almost 3 years just to have the chance at Lebron. Could only do so because they already had a top 5 drafted superstar on their team. Out West Spurs arent the Spurs without the ping pong ball falling in their favor and getting Tim Duncan. Top 5 teams in the West….all have a franchise player drafted high in the NBA draft.

You think Lebron is going back to Cleveland if they dont have Kyrie Irving and multiple no.1s to trade?

And like I mentioned already….theirs a team right up the road…that shows you spending money without the draft DOES NOT WORK.

I think the Sixers strategy is going as planned so far.

It will take some time and luck to see if fully realized. As any plan, there is a risk that plan may not turn out in the Sixers’ favor. Injuries and players not developing are the two biggest concerns. However, if these players do turn into what we hope they will the Sixers will be in great shape.

The Sixers need a scoring wing. I hope the Sixers get Mario Hezonja out of Croatia. I think he and Dario would be great together on this team.

As with any long-term plan, it will take time to develop.

Tua you are correct. Sixers had absolutely no assets outside of Jrue Holiday before last year like EOS stated above.

Keep hearing this nonsense of “you have to draft well and develop guys” that BigL and other dolts like to spout on here….yet it is exactly what he is doing. He flipped our lone asset in Holiday into a top 5 talent in the draft and at 10 drafted another asset in MCW. This year due to circumstance he got his hands on the best talent in the draft again. Of course its a crap shoot…Greg Oden went no.1 over Durant.

There was nothing being developed before this new regime took over but in one year the clueless fools on here expect a roster full of assets and young guys like there isnt any other teams in the NBA doing the same thing.

Or better yet…the Robin Hoods…shouting “They are stealing from the fans!!!” Lol when anyone who knows anything knows the Sixers make their money off the Comcast deal, they can survive an empty arena….they wont survive going into the next deal with a bad team. They are trying to put a real winner on the floor. Literally starting over from scratch…but after 1 year fools want to say it doesnt work. SMH

More than anything I know what mediocrity does to a franchise and I watched for the entire post Iverson era and your misguided fustration I had when we foolishly destroyed this team with deals to Iggy and Brand and throwing away players for Bynum like Vucevic. Or with the 2nd pick in the draft taking Evan Turner when the best player was DeMarcus Cousins.

Unlike you and many on here I still follow this team religously. The Birds are my squad and rep Philly but I grew up with Barkley posters. I learned how to shoot foul shouts at Sixers camps at the Spectrum with Ron Andersen. I had a Shawn Bradley jersey. I know bad. I know Sixers bad. The team may be bad but the direction and play is not. Especially not in todays NBA. Look at the talent that is set to be in Free Agency within the next two years…there is opportunity there. We finally have a chance to be involved in that opportunity. As a real fan thats all you want.

Or you can trade for Jason Richardson who sits at the end of the bench collecting checks and never playing. He should be the sole reminder of what mediocrity and piss poor planning can do to a franchise.

Panthers can’t Run the Ball, are not getting Sacks or Creating Turnovers on D like they did last Season.. They have no real deep, big-play threat for fastg or east Scores like last year with Steve SMith and Ted Ginn
They have to grind out 10-12 Play Drives with smart, effiicent execution led by QB Cam Newton and a spotty OL and WR Corp (Outside of Benjamin/TE Olsen) but no one to stretch the field or no RB who can break a long one.. They will struggle to so 14-17 Pts a Game
I think the Saints roll them over tonight (38-13) and get on a Winning Streak and take the weak NFC South at 10-6 while the Panthers Finish 6-9-1

The strategy is simple. Get high draft picks. Get young stars. Then be able to attract high level free agents. Its what happened with OKC and Clippers. The Thunder got Ibaka, Westbrook, Durant, and Harding through the draft because they were bad for years as the Sonics. The Clippers got players like DeAndre Jordan and Blake Giffith through the draft which then made the organization attractive for players like Chris Paul to come over by trade.

The Sixers are using this model but doing it in an excellerated manner. I say kudos to them. MCW, Noels, Embid would never of touched the Sixers in years past. I say get another lottery pick, have enough cap space to give out max contracts to high level free agents and then do some real damage.

Milwaukee vs Philly tonight —
looking at the buck roster their guards are bad ( Knight, Marshall, Mayo) it looks like they have two young inexperienced small forwards in Parker and Antetokounmpo. Sixers should look to pluck one of them off the buck roster in the future since both won’t resign in Milwaukee because the other will be the starter much like Iggy and Turner couldn’t co-exist on the floor together and Stackhouse and Iverson couldn’t play together either as both were shooting guards.

You’re overlooking Kris Middleton. He starts at the 4. He’s actually good. Kidd started Giannis at the two the other night to bring OJ Mayo off the bench for sorting on Monday. His squad down the stretch vs Bobcats was knight mayo Middleton parker and the kid Larry.

J.Kidd actually did a pretty fan hours coaching job. They could score but couldn’t play defense and let Bobcats back after they were down big.

Interested in seeing Noel vs Middleton who’s athletic and will make him work. Parker could show out.He struggled a bit with speed at the 3 and couldn’t play 4 because he would get abused by Al Jeffersen.

Cliff was wrong on Noel as soon as he played his summer league game.

He knows nothing about basketball. He doesn’t even know the positions the guys he throws out there.

The last time I proved him wrong he got do mad he copy and pasted an article then added words to it to be right.

Hahahaha….

Best rookie on the floor last night was Noel…

And it pains me to say this as a Duke fan….Parker is Evan Turnerish….skilled but athletically not on the same level and without a true position.

Ok Izzell and Cliff, enough with the back and forth. Save that for Dcar, Fraudman, MHitler and myself ha ha ha

I digress, Klay Thomson may be available this offseason, Kawhi Leonard too. I actually like both of their games. Both are good all around players and haven’t even scratched the surface potential wise

If Klay and Kawhi don’t resign (which is a strong possibility at this point), the Sixers could offer each a max deal and have $25m to spare.

Starters:
MCW,Klay,Kawhi,Noel,Joel. I’d love that..

I can dream too haha

Lol I would overpay for Klau Thompson I think he’s a better version of Joe Johnson, I want nothing to do with Kawhi Leonard. I like his game but he’s Iggy with a better 3pt shot and if I’m spending bag I want a go to shower. Plus Klay is a true floor spacer. If GSW struggled etc Klay will be on the move and GSW is making you take back Bogut or Lees contract but it’s worth it.

Leornard’s not going anywhere
Both Parker & Ginobli are at the end of their
Careers, Spurs lock up Leonard, no doubt..

Paul I’m not saying they wont because they should. What I’m saying is dont dismiss the idea of him possibly joining the Sixers

Remember who helped develop Kawhi Leonards game? Coach Brett Brown. He’s was on the Spurs coaching staff for many years. There is a familiarity there, a comfort level there between the two, and the Sixers run the same exact system as the Spurs

So if there was anywhere Leonard would go besides back to the Spurs, I think it would be to the Sixers

If he doesn’t sign back with the Spurs, I think the Sixers will make a run at him and will offer him a max deal..

Spurs are smart and there’s a reason they supported againstlottery reform and the draft. If they don’t think he’s a true sparse they aren’t resigning him. At best to me he’s a Pippen clone…However if they don’t have Jordan on the team why sink 70 mil with him. They have their eyes set on a Duncan replacement….I think that’s why they are hedging on Leonard.

Nerlans Noel is an NBA player — after 2 games you can see the talent, no doubt. He is making a ton of mistakes but that is expected learning the NBA game. Averaging 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks while playing 35 minutes a game. The sixers nailed the selection especially considering the inferior talent drafted before him. ( Otto Porter, Alex Len, Anthony Bennett, Cody Zeller ) Brett Brown says he will start to limit his minutes from the 35 he is playing now to 24-28 minutes a game. After seeing the talent in Carter Williams and Nerlans Noel compared to their draft class peers I feel good and believe in Sam Hinkie ability when projecting Joel Embiid and Dario Saric especially after watching MCW and Noel out perform their draft class.

When MCW comes back he will blossom even more. Written is a turnover shoot first player. I like him off the bench add a spark plug. However he doesn’t get ready baskets for his big men and is not a good decision maker in transition. In transition is where MCW will make Noel shine.

**Sixers News**

According to a source, D-League reigning Rookie of the year Robert Covington will be signing a long term contract with the Philadelphia 76ers

Covington is 6’9 215 with alot of talent, hes only 23 years old with a high ceiling
Can score in a number of ways, can shoot the mid range and 3, post up, drive etc

We’re starting to see this team really take shape. Now MCW will be returning tomorrow night playing along side NN, we’ll get a chance to see how they gel, and lets get Covington out there too

This is going to be a long, lanky, athletic, smart team. I love it

don’t do that, Sunday in Toronto the Sixers were down to 2 big men total at tip off ( Henry Sims and Brandon Davis) Load DCar up with a couple chilli dogs, a donut, a beer and some Halloween candy to throw some weight around for a 10 minutes a few rebounds.

the nba is a complete f.ing joke…no ifs ands or buts– a JOKE! and for those that are referring to this tank 2.0 it is really 3.0– three years of the ‘coveted high lottery picks’– a freaking travesty- anyone who pays 1 penny to see this is foolish!

I was more pissed at the lineup changes. They still were gonna lose but I think Brett Brown got a little to damn cute with the small ball early.

Lol see what happens tonight

Izell I know the guys are trying their best but this is bad, I was afraid of losses like this because that was beyond embarrassing, there is nothing gained by putting a product like this on the floor. Do you think Brett Brown survives this year?

Oh definitely. Dude Brett Brown is the guard whisperer. What he’s done with Tony Wroten is amazing. He’s not my type of player but Brown is refining him.

Brown isn’t gone until the first crop of real free agent signings start with this team. That’s probably 2 years away. Although I think they are players this summer.

lineup changes didn’t make any sense. KJ McDaniels is awful against smaller players and Brett Brown had him guarding Monte Ellis instead of Chandler Parson. Then he started a 6’9” Henry Simms and 6’8” Mbah a Moute against the Dallas’ twin 7 footers.

Inauspicious beginning to the MCW/Noel show.
