The Ups And Downs Of A Football Season

folescardsHow quickly feelings about your team and projections with how far they can go will spiral during the course of 17 weeks.

Never mind the fact that we lost to the Green Bay Packers, it’s about the margin to which we lost, and how it went down, that has a lot to do with the feeling in the air this week.  Our secondary was pathetic, and the Eagles continued to show that when facing good football teams their flaws are exploited and little depth as serviceable replacements is on this roster.

You hear around the NFL the impact of first round rookies, yet a waste of a selection is what defines the contribution we are receiving from the 26th overall selection.  Jordan Matthews is having a solid season, and over the last few weeks has had some big games.  If you minus the rotational snaps that seventh rounder Beau Allen is given, this draft is not providing the Eagles help like other “Super Bowl” contending teams are receiving.  There are cornerbacks and safeties doing some good things that were scouting and graded just like the Eagles did with their prep, why are they not on this football team?  Were some of the Oregon ties and “reaches” for guys like Huff necessary, they are starting to look like blinded misfires on the behalf of Chip.

There are teams with less skilled/experienced combinations of offensive linemen and playmakers, yet they are having better consistency and success at running the football.  Foles and/or Sanchez are not equipped to lead this football team with their overall makeup and talent level, it’s the running game that is our bread and butter, right now it’s not where it needs to be.

If McCoy prefers to run the football out of “non-shotgun” formations, go ahead and do so.  If the problem is that opposing defenses are crowding the box, add a sixth offensive lineman or line a guy like Polk/Casey as a lead blocker in the backfield, do something to match what the other team is doing to minimize your run game.

Even after the loss to the Packers, I view the NFC as “open” for which team makes it to the Super Bowl.  Record wise, we are still in first place, with some big time games staring at us, testing our ability to beat some of the better competition.

The Titans can’t be overlooked, that is who we play next.  Win the football game in convincing fashion, and get everyone fired up for the Thanksgiving showdown with the Cowboys.

Chip has mentioned on multiple of occasions that the locker rooms has many leaders, guys who hold other guys accountable, who don’t shy away from speaking their mind when facing adversity.

I believe this “team” has already moved past, absolutely nothing to gain from living in a game that is already a few days in the past.

You beat up the bad teams in the NFL; the Titans are not on our level.  The Philly fans will be looking for a “show” on Sunday; the defense that they are facing can be run on, time, time and time again.

Run Shady, run like the guy that went #1 in many fantasy drafts and who made the argument as being the best in the league.

All it takes is a big win on Sunday to turn the frowns upside down, “just” getting the job done will not be enough, we must dominate and play every down and quarter with the urgency needed after a “thrashing” like last week.

I cringe when the Eagles arrive in the red zone on 1st down hoping they don’t give Shady the ball, expecting him to lose yardage. He has been awful in the red zone this season. That is definitely one area that teams have been able to successfully scout the eagles play book,

a scrap heap safety named Prosinski and now Roc Carmichael have both passed draft pick Ed Reynolds to make the 53 man roster. Taylor Hart is a long shot to ever contribute. The special team coach Dave Fipp doesn’t think Marcus Smith is good enough and can’t use him. The Eagles draft is down to 3 players:
Jordan Matthews- nailed the selection, a future star in the NFL.
Josh Huff – He is getting opportunities, expect him to turn the light on and get a 5 catch 50 yard game soon. Borderline whether he was a good selection right now.
Beau Allen – backup NT who is surpassed Marcus Smith and Taylor Hart to get snaps in the Eagle front seven.
Jaylen Watkins year has been a waste. If he can’t beat out Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher maybe he needed to be moved to safety to get a try at beating out Nate Allen.

It’s a bit of a predictable disaster…the Eagles never lost to Green Bay like this before. Bradley Fletcher would be a liability against the run, because he’s just too light to play strong safety. Did you not see how badly the Eagles got torched across the middle the week Allen was out? People need to give it a rest.

Jeff Maehl isn’t adding anything to the team. Ifeanyi Momah is on the Lions practice squad after being snatched up from the Browns practice squad…he’s going to going to get a chance to play somewhere at some point it should be here. Momah has more upside as a red zone threat on this team than anyone not named Maclin, Matthews, Ertz or Celek…
